Paolo Roberto Ferreira Mezes, known by all as Barrão, moved to Vila Autódromo sixteen years ago. After learning to fish and dedicating himself to the craft, he brought his wife and two young children to the peaceful, lakeside favela in Rio’s West Zone to turn the craft into a living. Monday, Feb. 25, 2013–Residents of Largo do Tanque undergo forced evictions and demolition of homes in Rio de Janeiro’s West Zone, to make room for the Transcarioca highway and BRT, whose final trajectory is still unknown to the public. In under 2 weeks, 54 houses were demolished and hundreds of residents left to fend for themselves. February 22–Approximately 50 families are currently being evicted from Largo do Tanque in Jacarepaguá, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, by Rio de Janeiro’s City government, with no respect for human rights or local legislation regulating relocation procedures, and only laughable compensation. Research funded by the IOC plans to follow promises made by the Rio 2016 Olympic Committee
One of the major social legacy promises found in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic and Paralympic Games Candidature File is the provision of infrastructure, programs and policies that support and encourage sport and physical activity participation among the city’s population, particularly among low-income youth.
