The Pedra Branca State Park was created in 1974 and covers 10% of Rio’s municipal territory, giving it the title of largest Conservation Unit (UC) in the municipality and making it one of the world’s largest urban forests. It is four times larger than Tijuca Forest, also in Rio. Light demolishes Verdejar’s headquarters

On Monday morning, representatives from Rio’s electricity supplier, Light, arrived unannounced at the headquarters of socio-environmental NGO Verdejar with a judicial notice for immediate eviction to clear the land for a new substation. Members of the 15-year-old non-profit were taken completely by surprise and could only watch as Light, who arrived accompanied by military police, a moving truck and several workers with sledgehammers, demolished their headquarters.

Complexo do Alemão, a complex of favelas in Rio’s North Zone, is perhaps best known for its history of violence related to drug trafficking and police occupation. However, project members of organisation Verdejar (Becoming Green) are working to draw attention to the area for a completely different reason.
Verdejar was founded in 1997 by Luiz Carlos Matos Marins, known as Luiz Poeta (“Luiz the Poet”), interviewed by RioOnWatch prior to his passing in late 2011. Poeta’s idea was to create trails and collect refuse in the Serra da Misericordia, home to the largest section of Atlantic Forest in Rio’s densely urban North Zone.

Solidarity vs. Individualism: The Power of Mutirão

I have always been amazed by solidarity! To me, seeing people getting together to help each other, fight as a group instead of alone and be there for each other is the hope that the world can get better. Even in the presence of pain, disasters and wars, when there is solidarity, there is hope that in future things will improve, some good will come of it all.
