Perched at the top of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/GKsHYp\" target=\"_blank\">Rocinha<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">, the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro, Vila Laboriaux has been <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1cAqaS5\" target=\"_blank\">fighting eviction threats<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"> from the government for over three years. Since then, community members have been working tirelessly to resist removal and recently succeeded in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">August, after Mayor Eduardo Paes announced that the state would begin <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/14B3v2N\" target=\"_blank\">investing in infrastructure<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"> for Vila Laboriaux, inste<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">ad of removal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1cXwwJy\">Movimento Preserva Laboriaux<\/a>, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?attachment_id=11637\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11637\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11637\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/laboriaux_2-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/laboriaux_2-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/laboriaux_2.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>environmental group working to improve conditions in the community, facilitated the event as a part of its Socio-Environmental Diagnosis to\u00a0identify the strengths and weaknesses of Vila Laboriaux, an initiative started in August.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/13Sv7Rb\">During that initial event<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">, residents highlighted the importance of protecting their local environment\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">and also pointed to improvements in public services, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/13I7xpK\" target=\"_blank\">sanitation<\/a>, that are greatly desired. After this event, the organization has continued distributing questionnaires door-to-door for all residents in order to gauge people\u2019s perceptions regarding the environmental conditions of Laboriaux.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Co-organizer Gabriel Voto expressed that, \u201cto summarize our organization&#8217;s philosophy in one word, it would be <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ROgT8W\" target=\"_blank\">participation<\/a>. In order to conduct a legitimate and sustainable process to last as a long term project, we must construct it with a bottom-up approach, construct it locally with the desires of the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On Sunday morning, children painted the walls <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?attachment_id=11636\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11636\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11636\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/laboriaux_3-300x152.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/laboriaux_3-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/laboriaux_3.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>and benches of the community\u2019s square green and blue, echoing the group\u2019s ecological message and adding to what was accomplished during the event in August. Soon afterwards, local circus group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/circonoato\">Circo no Ato<\/a> arrived and paraded\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">through the community with live music,\u00a0<\/span>bringing with them more residents back to the square for an hour-long show of acrobatic entertainment.\u00a0During the afternoon, children made vertical flower gardens out of plastic bottles to be hung on\u00a0the newly painted walls\u00a0of the square, bringing the day\u2019s events to a close.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Sunday\u2019s gathering of art, music, and performance was a fun way to further unite Vila Laboriaux and reaffirm their goals of sustainability and community improvements.
