{"id":12418,"date":"2013-11-19T15:05:44","date_gmt":"2013-11-19T18:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=12418"},"modified":"2019-12-03T09:32:47","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T12:32:47","slug":"circulando-dialogue-and-communication-in-the-favela-event-in-complexo-do-alemao","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=12418","title":{"rendered":"Circulando: Community Voices Unite for Dialogue and Cultural Expression in Alem\u00e3o"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday November 9, the ninth edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/GUXh5D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ra\u00edzes em Movemento<\/a> (Roots in Movement) Institute&#8217;s <em>Circulando<\/em> event took place in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/oKvkVy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>\u00a0in Rio&#8217;s North Zone. Subtitled &#8220;Dialogue and Communication in the Favela,&#8221; the day&#8217;s program went from 9am to 11pm and included poetry, debate, graffiti, and musical performances, with the focus overrall on human rights.<\/p>\n<p>The event included exhibitions of photography by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1byapp6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bruno Itan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/HUQ1Hf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexandre Correa<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/YU11Ml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seu Rodrigues Moura<\/a>, Flavia Viana and <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1bU6YuJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maria Buzanovsky<\/a> and the creation of new works of graffiti on walls along the Central Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>Just outside the Roots in Movement Institute&#8217;s headquarters, organizers built a yellow tent to host a debate and exhibition on the work of environmental group\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/R1t56h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Verdejar Socioambiental<\/a> and an open-mic for poetry and song.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, the Guerreiras da Arte (Art Warriors) collective mounted an artisan fair and SESC carried out training workshops. There was a presentation of capoeira, as well as music and dance by the <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/17DB7M9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anjos e Querubins Popular AfroBeat Orchestra<\/a> and the Renovation Dance Group (who came from Pelotas in the south of Brazil). <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/18IIQJ8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Occupy Alem\u00e3o<\/a> also organized a book exchange and posting of messages. In the evening, rap and funk groups such as Bonde 2Cria, Eddu Grau, and Rapper Fiel gave shows, as well as a Dan\u00e7a do Passinho dance battle and headliner Rapper Filipe Ret.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?attachment_id=12416\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12416\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12416 size-content\" title=\"Verdejar spoke about the degradation of the Serra da Miseric\u00f3rdia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_0006-Version-2-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Human rights themes took prominence at the Verdejar debate, where leaders from the NGO discussed the 16-year fight for an ecological park in the Serra da Miseric\u00f3rdia. Despite promises of millions of reais for the park, the director explained, today it is being used as a pretext for <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/p242P0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">removal<\/a> of families who have lived in and around the area for as many as 40 years. Edson, one of Verdejar&#8217;s directors, asked repeatedly \u201cWhat sort of park is this?\u201d calling attention to City government repeatedly giving license for the operation of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1bUawgy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three highly-pollutive rock quarries<\/a> within the area designated for the park. Verdejar has started a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/HUSYYq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">campaign through the &#8220;Pressure Cooker&#8221; platform<\/a> of political activism group <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/13P6bGV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meu Rio<\/a> to call for the Secretaries of Housing and the Environment to enter into a discussion with local groups over the future of the park.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?attachment_id=12412\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12412\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12412 size-content\" title=\"Circulando included many cultural interventions including music, dance, poetry and photography exhibition\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/DSC_0042-Version-2-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Residents shared their experiences of threat and removal while volunteers from the Occupy Human Rights campaign of the ALERJ\u2019s Human Rights Commission collected information about these and other human rights violations in Alem\u00e3o. \u00a0One of the numerous screenings of the film &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1bTZurF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dear Mandela<\/a>,&#8221; which looks at anti-evictions activism in South Africa, also took place inside the Institute at this time, followed by a discussion and debate.\u00a0Pamphlets from the Direitos 1Manos campaign of Adubando Raizes Locais were also distributed to address historic rights violations experienced by favela residents.<\/p>\n<p>Ricardo Moura, coordinator of the Adubando Raizes Locais project, emphasized the dialogue with multiple social movements that Circulando affords in a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/17gtHRQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reflective piece<\/a> published on the Roots in Movement Institute&#8217;s site. Both the Verdejar debate and the &#8220;Dear Mandela&#8221; film, he wrote, \u201cfocused on inserting an agenda of rights of and for favelas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Moura goes on: &#8220;These moments are important, especially when we remember this was a public event that was open in all senses, horizontal and collective.\u201d\u00a0 Though Circulando represented the closing of one project&#8211;Abudando Raizes Locais&#8211;its character of being creative, inventive and powerful, as Moura described it, paves the way to many future openings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>On Saturday November 9, the ninth edition of Ra\u00edzes em Movemento (Roots in Movement) Institute&#8217;s Circulando event took place in Complexo do Alem\u00e3o\u00a0in Rio&#8217;s North Zone.
