The experience of families who have been resettled in the housing estates of the\u00a0Minha Casa Minha Vida<\/a>\u00a0(federal housing) program is not encouraging for residents who may face the same fate. The\u00a0most common challenges<\/a>\u00a0concern the\u00a0distance between home and work<\/a>, transportation quality,\u00a0access to public services<\/a>, and the\u00a0quality<\/a>\u00a0of the new apartments.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>“The BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) forces us to summon the courage to confront people we don’t know. Other riders just want to sit and don’t respect the designated seats for the elderly, mothers with lap children, anything like that. The BRT is no different from the (suburban) train, we call it the \u2018BR-Train,\u2019\u201d said Jeane Santos, who used to live in Vila Recreio II, and, in spite of its distance from Campo Grande, still works in her old neighborhood. Her husband lost his job as a consequence of the distance.<\/p>\n

\"\"The residents who left their neighborhoods in Recreio live with a further travesty: their land was not even used<\/a> in the construction of the Transoeste, as\u00a0Brasil de Fato RJ\u00a0<\/em>reported in September 2013. For Santos, the City\u2019s intention was to take low-income residents out of the area. “They are the bourgeois, they do not want to mix with us. They just want our labor. We come to serve them, and then they want us right out of [Barra da Tijuca].”<\/p>\n

The low quality housing projects have also frustrated families, as cracks have already appeared in the homes and the common areas are not frequently cleaned. “The residents can\u2019t afford to pay, the city is supposed pay, and it turns out that nobody cares,” complained Maria Luiza. “The condo fee costs R$50. No one even has enough to eat\u2014they\u2019re selling water at the intersection to be able to eat\u2014how will they be able to pay?” she asked.<\/p>\n

Access to public services, such as education, is also a problem. “Here in Campo Grande, there are not enough [public] schools for everyone. My son will have to study in a private school and full tuition costs R$450. I will have to apply for a scholarship. He is three-and-a-half and won\u2019t be anything without his studies. I want a better future for him,” Santos concluded.<\/p>\n
