A 17-year-old student was shot dead in Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a> on Saturday September 27. According to witnesses, Marcos Heleno was shot by police and was left to agonize on the sidewalk until the ambulance arrived an hour later. He died in hospital.<\/p>\n

Marcos is the third young man killed in four months of unrest in Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>. Witnesses allege<\/a>\u00a0once he was\u00a0shot down, the police did not allow anyone near to help, which led to his bleeding on the pavement.<\/p>\n

\u201cA working man was hit in Pra\u00e7a do Conhecimento,\u201d a witness posted online. \u201cHe is agonizing and the police is pepper spraying anyone who tries to help. He is going to die because no one can help. He is one more innocent person.\u201d<\/p>\n

A video<\/a> posted by the community’s internationally-recognized\u00a0newspaper Voz da Comunidade<\/em>\u00a0shows Marcos on a stretcher, being taken to the hospital to the sound of desperate screams from his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarcos Heleno, 17, student of Col\u00e9gio Estadual CAIC Teophilo de Souza Pinto, in Nova Bras\u00edlia, was shot this afternoon in Complexo do Alem\u00e3o,\u201d reported\u00a0Voz da Comunidade<\/em>. \u201cThe community is tense, the cable car services are suspended until further notice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Residents of Alem\u00e3o\u00a0took to social media to speak out about the event and complain about the current state of their community.<\/p>\n

Maria, one reader of Voz da Comunidade<\/a><\/em> wrote: \u201cThere is no respect for residents of Complexo do Alem\u00e3o. We are living a war, with no right to come and go. God, we are in your hands so no one else dies!\u201d<\/p>\n

A\u00a0few residents blamed<\/a> Marcos Heleno for getting involved with the wrong crowd, although there has been no indication from the authorities he was involved in any criminal activity: \u201cI was born and raised in Alem\u00e3o, I had family support, always studied in the same public schools everyone goes to. Even so, I never got mixed with anyone I shouldn\u2019t. Life is made of choices,\u201d \u00a0wrote Luana.<\/p>\n

Others blamed the\u00a0Pacifying Police Unit (UPP)<\/a>\u00a0policemen for the killing of young black men in the favelas. \u201cThey are human beings and they shouldn\u2019t be treated this way,\u201d wrote\u00a0Lais. \u201cUnprepared policemen go to the streets without knowing what has to be done, with the objective of killing. When will this stop?\u201d<\/p>\n

Juliana added: \u201cDown with make-up from the government. We can\u2019t stand it anymore! First it was Dona Dalva, then Caio, then Antonio and now Markinhos\u2026 When will this end? Complexo is begging for peace!\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0disappointment with the UPPs<\/a>\u00a0was apparent in several postings. Young Lucas wrote, \u201cWhat this UPP is doing here is not cool. People we love are dying. People, this isn\u2019t a pacifying unit, it\u2019s a killing unit. It wasn\u2019t supposed to be like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some residents also mentioned the upcoming elections, some advising people not to vote, others saying voting is essential for a change in public policy. \u201cWe have to make ourselves heard, we should protest on election day by not voting,\u201d \u00a0wrote Irys.<\/p>\n

A community Facebook page\u00a0posted a print screen of mocking comments allegedly made by military policemen on a photo of Marcos. One of the messages reads: \u201cWake up, satan, fresh meat is here. Lol\u201d<\/p>\n
