After seven years providing an acclaimed<\/a> space for historic preservation, culture and art in Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a>, the Museu da Mar\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0has been marked for\u00a0eviction<\/a>, with 90 days to vacate the premises.<\/p>\n

True to the lines quoted above from the\u00a0Tempo da Resist\u00eancia\u00a0<\/i>(Time of Resistance) exhibit\u00a0(one of the twenty themes that structure the museum’s permanent exhibition space) the Museu da Mar\u00e9<\/a> engaged several hundred people in support of the museum’s permanence during last\u00a0week’s cultural protest entitled ‘Spring of Resistance: Museum, Memories, Utopias,’ where workshops, free\u00a0guided tours\u00a0and petition signing sessions showcased the importance of\u00a0the museum for\u00a0the community.<\/p>\n

Launched\u00a0in 2006, the museum was developed and maintained in a building loaned for 10 years to the NGO CEASM<\/a>\u00a0(Mar\u00e9 Center of Solidarity Studies and Actions). This contract expired last year. In June 2014, one of the managers from Grupo Libra de Com\u00e9rcio Mar\u00edtimo<\/a><\/i>, communicated the loss of investor\u00a0interest\u00a0in renewing the terms. Recently, on September 10, the museum received official notice giving 90 days to vacate\u00a0the\u00a0property. For this reason the eighth\u00a0edition of the annual Brazilian museum week in Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a> took on a sense of urgency.<\/p>\n

Strategies for resistance<\/h3>\n

The eviction threat has resulted in\u00a0a strong call for joint action<\/a>. Various strategies have been\u00a0implemented to get the public involved in the movement to save the museum. In the week of the Spring of Resistance program there were meetings and workshops that included handicraft, capoeira, reading circles and\u00a0environment debates that emphasized the importance of resistance<\/a>. A\u00a0Twitter event<\/a> on September 23 generated several hundred tweets in one hour using the hashtag #SOSMuseuDaMare<\/a>, taking the movement online to reach the wider society.\u00a0A\u00a0theatrical performance and candy\u00a0distribution on Saturday September 27, the last day and apex of the Spring of Resistance, attracted\u00a0around\u00a0500 people: favela and asfalto <\/i>(formal city) residents, university students and professors protested against the eviction of the museum.<\/p>\n

This is not the first or\u00a0the last action organized by the\u00a0museum, that\u00a0in August created a movement called \u201cMuseu da Mar\u00e9 Resists!” supported by the Brazilian Institute of Museums (IBRAM<\/a>), the City’s city planning Pereira Passos Institute (IPP<\/a>) and the City’s Rio as Humanity’s Patrimony Institute (IRPH<\/a>). The protection of the building was approved\u00a0on September 18: such measure would not overturn the eviction but at least legally secure the value of the building\u2019s patrimony for the city of Rio de Janeiro. There are four\u00a0petitions to stop the eviction: three\u00a0online (on Meu Rio<\/a>‘s “Pressure Cooker<\/a>“,\u00a0Peti\u00e7\u00e3o P\u00fablica<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Avaaz.org<\/a>) and one paper-based, as well as a mailing pressure group. In addition to all these actions, there will be a march<\/a> from the Museu da Mar\u00e9<\/a> on October 18, that aims to block the nearby Avenida Brasil highway. There are also weekly Twitter events with the\u00a0next one<\/a>\u00a0tomorrow,\u00a0Thursday\u00a0October 9 at 7pm, Rio de Janeiro time.<\/p>\n

Resisting together is possible<\/h3>\n

Having received some 40,000 visitors and numerous awards during its seven years of activity, Museu da Mar\u00e9 stands tall in the global museum community. \u201cSauvons le Museu da Mar\u00e9<\/a><\/i>\u201d (Let\u2019s save Museu da Mar\u00e9) is an example of international support for the museum coming from France, pushing for the\u00a0International Council of Museums<\/a>\u00a0to acknowledge and support the cause.<\/p>\n
