Last Monday evening February 23, 800 people once again<\/a> took to the streets to protest police violence in\u00a0Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a><\/em>\u00a0in a demonstration called Protest for Life in Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The event began at 7 pm and ran\u00a0as a peaceful march where protesters walked from Avenida Brasil towards the West Zone, reaching Linha Amarela where they walked on to the entrance of Vila do Pinheiro, where they first heard gun shots. The march<\/em>\u00a0descended into violence between police and the protesters. Police claim their confrontation was with suspected drug dealers, and\u00a0El Mundo reports two people were killed and three others were wounded<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

The protest comes in the wake of an incident last December<\/a> in which a vehicle with five Mar\u00e9 residents was gunned down by the Military Police. A 29 year-old man<\/a> was left in a coma with his leg amputated after being struck by bullets. Last week, a resident was killed after being mistaken for a drug dealer<\/a>. Most recently, a community\u00a0van was also targeted <\/a>during its journey between Mar\u00e9 and Bonsucesso in Vila do Pinheiro.<\/em><\/p>\n

Redes de Desenvolvimento da Mar\u00e9<\/a>, an internationally respected\u00a0community organization with centers\u00a0in all of Mar\u00e9’s 16 neighborhoods<\/a>, published a note in support of Complexo da Mar\u00e9 residents suffering with police violence. It reads<\/a>: “Once again the violence practiced by the state\u00a0Security Forces is gravely hurting the right to life and imposing fear on the residents of Complexo da Mar\u00e9. It is\u00a0unacceptable\u00a0that these residents continue to have their rights disrespected.”<\/em><\/p>\n
