{"id":20771,"date":"2015-03-12T08:00:41","date_gmt":"2015-03-12T11:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=20771"},"modified":"2015-03-11T12:23:04","modified_gmt":"2015-03-11T15:23:04","slug":"community-fashion-school-protests-postponement-of-fashion-rio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=20771","title":{"rendered":"Community Fashion School Protests Postponement of Fashion Rio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday March 5 a collection of\u00a0clothes designed by fashion students of <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1Exzsw7\" target=\"_blank\">Casa Gera\u00e7\u00e3o<\/a> school in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/T5QI5Q\" target=\"_blank\">Vidigal<\/a> was showcased\u00a0in the empty fountain of General Os\u00f3rio Plaza in Ipanema, instead of at\u00a0the much anticipated Fashion Rio show. Fashion students, members of\u00a0Rio de Janeiro\u2019s fashion community, and bystanders were present to watch the show.<\/p>\n<p>The event,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1994VYC\" target=\"_blank\">S\u00f3 Sobrou a Rua<\/a> (Only the Street is Left), was organized by Casa Gera\u00e7\u00e3o\u00a0as\u00a0a protest\u00a0against the second postponement of Fashion Rio\u2019s exhibition where the students&#8217; work was supposed to be showcased. Fashion Rio was\u00a0postponed because the event\u00a0is still under review by the Fashion Business Forum of the Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro.\u00a0In an <a href=\"http:\/\/glo.bo\/1Bnpxqp\" target=\"_blank\">interview with<em> O Globo<\/em><\/a>, Paulo Borges, responsible for the operations of Fashion Rio, explained\u00a0that the forum is faced with the challenges of reforming the event\u00a0and evaluating the strategy of the fashion market in Rio.<\/p>\n<p>Casa Gera\u00e7\u00e3o was created with the objective of providing students from Rio&#8217;s favela communities with the tools and outlets to express their creative potential. Even moreso now that Fashion Rio was closed or postponed. We need Fashion Rio to support the fashion market in its development. And I think the people from the last course need to present their work, to show what they did this whole year. This is what is behind the protest, protesting against this, against Fashion Rio closing for now and only happening in April, you know? They keep postponing, postponing.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>How do you think Rio should present itself in the fashion world?<i>\u00a0<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><i>I think we have to show more of our lifestyle, our happiness. Unfortunately we don\u2019t create so much fashion that is really unique, we don\u2019t copy but we make things similar to things from outside [of Brazil]. And for us to be a part of the show because we were kind of abandoned, you know?<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>What are your hopes for the future of fashion in Rio?<\/h3>\n<p><i>Look, I think nowadays it is growing even more. Fashion is in everything.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alan:<\/strong> <i>Fashion attracts, and you\u00a0go crazy, you\u00a0get lost in the world, you give yourself.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>How do you see the relationship between fashion and protest?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Mariani:<\/strong> <i>Right now we see it very clearly related to how today Fashion Rio was postponed. This is what\u00a0brought protest and fashion together. Looking forward\u00a0it is possible [this relationship] grows even stronger.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alan:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Because fashion never stops, fashion cannot stop, ever.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>How do you think Rio should present itself in the fashion world?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>David:<\/strong> <i>As the first world, of course! Because here in Rio we have really talented people, people from Rio are very talented, they are\u00a0hard-working\u00a0and have the\u00a0force of desire. So I think it should present itself as the first world like Paris and Milan.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mariani:<\/strong> <i>Our struggle is the only one like it, here you find everything from the most stylish to the most tacky. Rio has everything to really be first world, part of the fashion of the first world.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>What are your hopes for the future of fashion in Rio?<\/h3>\n<p><strong> Mariani<\/strong>: <i>A lot of jobs.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>David:<\/strong> <i>My hope is that Rio is known. When you talk about Brazil, you talk about Rio. Don\u2019t talk about Brazil and talk about S\u00e3o Paulo, you have to talk about Rio as Brazil and the fashion in Rio.
