On Wednesday July 29 the City of Rio launched its first ever Youth Advisory Board<\/a>\u00a0in the City Palace\u00a0in Botafogo. The Youth Advisory Board\u00a0is a project of\u00a0LAB.Rio<\/a>, an initiative recently launched\u00a0by the City intending to<\/a>\u00a0provide a platform for discourse between the public and\u00a0the government.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Youth Advisory Board\u00a0is expected to have 100 participants aged 14 to 29 hailing from different parts of Rio\u2019s greater metropolitan area<\/a>. Organizers intend to form a diverse board\u00a0with\u00a0representation from historically excluded\u00a0groups\u00a0including\u00a0black and indigenous communities. With registration open until August 30, more than 600 people have already expressed interest in participating. Young people who are interested must submit a one\u00a0minute video to the official\u00a0application site<\/a>\u00a0in which they propose a positive project\u00a0for the city of Rio.<\/p>\n

\"Youth<\/a><\/p>\n

The selection process has two phases with the\u00a0main objective being to select a diverse pool of young adults. Apart from having participants from different socio-economic and racial backgrounds, LAB.Rio coordinator Thamyra Th\u00e2mara<\/a> also expressed the organization\u2019s desire to have representatives from other minority groups such as the LGBT+ community.<\/p>\n

The board\u00a0plans\u00a0to involve Rio\u2019s younger population<\/a> in public policy by having them think about substantial urban issues. Thamyra explained: \u201cWe will think for the whole city of Rio through the eyes of its\u00a0youth.\u201d<\/p>\n

The launch event\u00a0featured\u00a0a five-member panel discussion, moderated by LAB.Rio coordinator Luti Guedes. Panel members included Executive Secretary of Government Coordination for the City of Rio\u00a0Pedro Paulo, Observat\u00f3rio de Favelas<\/a>\u00a0journalist Silvana Bahia<\/a>, Coletivo Papo Reto<\/a> journalist and Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a> activist Raull Santiago<\/a>, Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a> writer Ana Paula Lisboa, and Thamyra Th\u00e2mara.<\/p>\n

\"Panellists<\/a><\/p>\n

The panel participants emphasized the importance of youth engagement and collectivity in public policy.\u00a0They expressed no doubt that today\u2019s engaged\u00a0youth have the potential to create positive ripple effects within their communities. As Thamyra explained: \u201cToday\u2019s youth already participate on the streets, on murals…which produces a unique culture for the area in which they reside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the panel discussion, audience members raised questions regarding the appeal for youth in favelas<\/a> to participate in these types of government projects and initiatives. \u201cI think it’s important to reflect on young people in the favelas because normally the favela is only seen in a negative light, so just taking them into consideration<\/a> can be constructive [towards participation],\u201d said\u00a0Raull Santiago.
