The Popular Committee on the World Cup and Olympics<\/a> has released a video<\/a> responding to Mayor Eduardo Paes<\/a>‘ claim that their dossiers<\/a> are prone to “exaggerated dramatization” and are “fraudulent.”\u00a0Paes’ comments were made during a\u00a0closed-door\u00a0OsteRio<\/a> event two weeks ago<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0being asked about the future\u00a0of Vila Aut\u00f3dromo<\/a> and its residents. The video features members of the Committee explaining their work “because, unlike\u00a0the Mayor, we have nothing to hide.” They end each repeating the statement\u00a0<\/span>“We have nothing to hide.”<\/p>\n

The Popular Committee<\/a> began\u00a0releasing detailed dossiers<\/a> documenting human rights<\/a>\u00a0abuses\u00a0in the lead-up\u00a0to Rio’s two\u00a0mega-events<\/a> in 2012<\/a> after it became apparent that reliable, public information was hard to come by. In the video, members of the committee describe committee participants as coming\u00a0from all facets\u00a0of Rio’s civil society including universities, social movements, human rights organizations and, most importantly, the people directly affected by the Olympics<\/a> and the World Cup<\/a>. They affirm that their work involves a number of nationally and internationally renowned researchers and experts in a collective effort.<\/p>\n

The Committee\u2019s video denounces the mayor\u2019s comments stating that the information his office has published is biased, omits spending, falsifies costs, and fails to address social or environmental concerns<\/a>. Members call for the public to demand better access to information and \u201creal transparency\u201d for matters that affect the public interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people of Vila Aut\u00f3dromo and the Popular Committee will continue to fight together for a just, transparent and genuinely\u00a0democratic city,\u201d says one person in the video.<\/p>\n
