The\u00a0exhibition opened on February 29, at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1x7FYF8\" target=\"_blank\">Pavuna<\/a> metro station in the far <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa3h9\" target=\"_blank\">North Zone<\/a> and has now moved to General Os\u00f3rio station in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1CaPjkD\" target=\"_blank\">Ipanema<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pfz23A\" target=\"_blank\">South Zone<\/a>\u00a0where it will run until March 18.<\/p>\n<p>Using an\u00a0interactive multimedia platform, visitors and commuters\u00a0can explore the social <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1HV2Xob\" target=\"_blank\">memory<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1xQhQc0\" target=\"_blank\">history<\/a> of\u00a012 favelas: <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1SAjeFJ\" target=\"_blank\">Acari<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1BIPlLG\" target=\"_blank\">Mangueira<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kUMbi5\" target=\"_blank\">Salgueiro<\/a>, Col\u00e9gio, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1U6o0yV\" target=\"_blank\">Chapad\u00e3o<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1DGhXtG\" target=\"_blank\">Borel<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1YFlK17\" target=\"_blank\">Pedreira<\/a> in the North Zone;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1jqQCNc\" target=\"_blank\">Provid\u00eancia<\/a>, Santo Ant\u00f4nio and Mineira\/<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1C0OFGu\" target=\"_blank\">S\u00e3o Carlos<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1p1GMFc\" target=\"_blank\">central Rio<\/a>;\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rIlhJj\" target=\"_blank\">Cantagalo<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1lU6eQ0\" target=\"_blank\">Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1m4JS9c\" target=\"_blank\">Rocinha<\/a> in the South Zone. Their stories and photo archives show\u00a0the development of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/VsQjMj\" target=\"_blank\">favela culture<\/a>, the lifestyle of residents and the urban landscapes of the communities themselves.<\/p>\n<p>In one of the stories, Eidibal Neves, a Cantagalo resident, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/21gYEh6\" target=\"_blank\">describes<\/a> what life was like in the favela when he was young: \u201cWhenever it was needed there was a neighbour to help with work, renovation, building a house. And we shared almost everything. If someone needed a clove of garlic, we would give them two or three. If we needed rice someone would give it to us. It was a constant exchange of favors. Image courtesy of Favela Tem Memoria\/Viva Rio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibition also sheds light on other aspects of favela history such as <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Tg0lMI\" target=\"_blank\">forced\u00a0evictions<\/a>\u00a0under the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Sbhc2J\" target=\"_blank\">military dictatorship<\/a>. Between 1968 and 1975 close to 100 communities were destroyed and more than 150,000 people removed from their homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Margarida Siqueira da Silva, former resident of the Catacumba favela in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1L9XR8Q\" target=\"_blank\">Lagoa<\/a> which was demolished in 1970, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/24UzM3v\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>:\u00a0&#8220;It was difficult for me to get used to the suburbs. I cried a lot when I had to leave. Joel da Minera from S\u00e3o Carlos <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1QJouYf\" target=\"_blank\">tells<\/a> of his family&#8217;s longtime involvement in the area&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wD7WsD\" target=\"_blank\">samba<\/a> history: &#8220;Samba&#8217;s in your roots isn&#8217;t it?! It&#8217;s hereditary&#8230; My father was one of the great pioneers in the community. As well as being a samba player, he was a great community leader who brought many benefits here.
