According to GatoM\u00cdDIA, &#8220;the idea is to increasingly empower the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1oQvcug\" target=\"_blank\">collaborative culture<\/a> of the favela, stimulating each person to share knowledge with another, strengthening a local network <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1ZZiFgV\" target=\"_blank\">culture of connected favela residents<\/a> building their own future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/12821485_1556038881375883_2486605588657018434_n.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-27516\" title=\"GatoM\u00cdDIA Favelado 2.0 residency. Photo by Jo\u00e3o Lima\" width=\"620\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/12821485_1556038881375883_2486605588657018434_n.jpg 960w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/12821485_1556038881375883_2486605588657018434_n-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/12821485_1556038881375883_2486605588657018434_n-768x510.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>GatoM\u00cdDIA raised funds to carry out the ambitious and innovative Favelado 2.0 residency through a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Nelumc\" target=\"_blank\">collective crowdfunding campaign<\/a> with seven other community projects in Complexo do Alem\u00e3o last\u00a0December and received funding from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Z4CU8H\" target=\"_blank\">Common Action Forum<\/a> in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>Over 200 young favela residents applied to take part in the residency, of which 20 were selected. Half the places were allocated for residents of Complexo do Alem\u00e3o and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1zvuEky\" target=\"_blank\">Penha<\/a>, where the residency took place, with other places going to residents of favelas across\u00a0the city of Rio and the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wAJ14x\" target=\"_blank\">Baixada Fluminense<\/a>\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1x0spnl\" target=\"_blank\">greater Rio<\/a>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1pnTqUS\" target=\"_blank\">final selection<\/a> included residents from Complexo do Alem\u00e3o, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rNMXO3\" target=\"_blank\">Mar\u00e9<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ZoemOA\" target=\"_blank\">Jacarezinho<\/a>, Cavalcante, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1RmnvKV\" target=\"_blank\">Engenho da Rainha<\/a> and Complexo da Penha in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa3h9\" target=\"_blank\">North Zone<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wwjhWi\" target=\"_blank\">City of God<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1XvQ11k\" target=\"_blank\">Pra\u00e7a Seca<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa7gI\" target=\"_blank\">West Zone<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1hXNzRG\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Marta<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1lU6uyu\" target=\"_blank\">Tabajaras<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pfz23A\" target=\"_blank\">South Zone<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1dVsdmj\" target=\"_blank\">S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o de Meriti<\/a> in the Baixada Fluminense. Participants came to the residence\u00a0with different interests, including graphic design, drama, video, journalism and graffiti.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/12670379_1556192004693904_4938091628785382304_n.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-27517\" title=\"A fanzine workshop encouraged participants to create their own comic. With a strong focus on <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1lYNH5n\" target=\"_blank\">participation<\/a> and exchange, the residency&#8217;s opening discussions\u00a0explored the philosophy that favelas are places of creativity and innovation, or <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1U5hyHx\" target=\"_blank\">maker culture<\/a>. Journalist and GatoM\u00cdDIA member <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1X904Kr\" target=\"_blank\">Thamyra Th\u00e2mara<\/a> argued that &#8220;creating and innovating in everyday life is a tool of resilience for poor, black, favela residents. We reinvent our lives every day. And we&#8217;re deconstructing to continue creating our own concepts and disputing our place to speak and make.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The opening days featured inspiring talks by media-activists <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Nj8p7u\" target=\"_blank\">Raull Santiago<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1CFBPI0\" target=\"_blank\">Coletivo Papo Reto<\/a> and Enderson Araujo from <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1VckanJ\" target=\"_blank\">M\u00eddia Perif\u00e9rica<\/a> in Salvador, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1TO4K9D\" target=\"_blank\">Northeast Brazil<\/a> and engaging\u00a0exercises in which participants had to defend their point of view.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1RmoIlm\" target=\"_blank\">Sabrina Martina<\/a>, 18, from Complexo do Alem\u00e3o <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1QXJMS8\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a>\u00a0on Day 3: &#8220;The idea is to incentivize our creativity&#8230; It&#8217;s a really cool project. It&#8217;s a totally new idea and I&#8217;m sure that we&#8217;re not going to come out of it the same.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/12804889_1556715807974857_4768144280512457814_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-27518\" title=\"Workshop on creativity and making videos. How about creating methodologies for these skills? The creative idea is nothing more than a combination of things. A great blender of the mind!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Photographer and GatoM\u00cdDIA member Jo\u00e3o Lima led photography workshops. The illustration workshop was led by designer and animator <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1SLmQJl\" target=\"_blank\">Lucas Pelegrineti<\/a> while Thamyra Tham\u00e2ra led workshops on social media and presenting projects.<\/p>\n<p>The second week of the residency focused on the practical application of the techniques learned and the development of projects\u00a0and ideas. Throughout the week the group worked collaboratively to produce <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1M7AeoM\" target=\"_blank\">videos<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1UzecN3\" target=\"_blank\">photo essays<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1VclSoV\" target=\"_blank\">collective text<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The video &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1ptXJ1m\" target=\"_blank\">Gambimake<\/a>&#8221; by\u00a0Mayara Ximenes, Caroline Cristimann, Isys Nat\u00e3, Alessandra Martins, Larissa Neves, Rodrigo Vicente and Robson Deluqui is a make-up tutorial using affordable products. Make-up artist presenter <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1Z0hB8c\" target=\"_blank\">Mayara<\/a>, 23, explains: &#8220;We always see loads of tutorials but always with really expensive make-up. We&#8217;re going to use products that you can buy in popular neighborhoods or even from street vendors. Nothing here cost more than R$10 and is accessible for everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/12801321_1556928004620304_6573527999758963446_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-27519\" title=\"Making the &quot;Gambimake&quot; video. With wit and charm, Samuel\u00a0highlights the weights created from soft drinks bottles, ice cream topping shakers from water bottles, car wash sponges made from a mattress, improvised trash cans and the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Vdm9po\" target=\"_blank\">moto-taxis<\/a> as effective transport through the favela&#8217;s narrow alleys.<\/p>\n<p>He closes the video speaking about his experience of the Favelado 2.0 residency: &#8220;It&#8217;s been a big adventure and great pleasure to be able to be with the people from the residency these last two weeks. It&#8217;s been an exchange of experiences and study. I&#8217;ve admired and liked it a lot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/12795542_1559454384367666_7663908744285459501_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-27520\" title=\"Photography workshop using mirrors. It also describes daily life and challenges such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1JVdggj\" target=\"_blank\">stigma<\/a> they experience in South Zone malls or bars, the difficulty of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1S8ftbj\" target=\"_blank\">transport<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1nseiJz\" target=\"_blank\">beach<\/a> or getting home late at night, arriving home during shootouts and tensions with police.\u00a0The text concludes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;[The favelado 2.0] has learned that their cell phone can be used as much for fun as for registering blows, the delicate moments of conflict when human rights are violated. They&#8217;re also called on to help the neighbor who&#8217;s bought a new phone but doesn&#8217;t know how to use it. The favelado 2.0 is local, active, taking\u00a0everything in, nothing goes unnoticed, is reinventing him or herself and strengthening the favela.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The residency <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1RUvMZu\" target=\"_blank\">closed on Saturday March 12<\/a> with a discussion about makers in the favelas and the presentation of projects developed during the two weeks.
