We would like to invite you to another resistance<\/a> activity in our community. An Evictions Museum<\/a>,\u00a0an initiative uniting us\u00a0residents with supporters who, in recent times, have contributed so much\u00a0to our struggle\u00a0to remain.<\/p>\n

Since 2014<\/a> we have been suffering the erasing of our\u00a0community due to forced evictions undertaken by the City of Rio de Janeiro. Over\u00a0550 families have been removed, leaving just over 20. Despite all this, our history hasn’t been erased. And this is why\u00a0we are building this museum.<\/p>\n

Faced with a\u00a0context of economic, political, and social crisis, those who feel most deeply the effects of this segregating\u00a0and oppressive administration\u00a0responding to\u00a0private interests, are the poorer members of the population. The violations<\/a> and pressures<\/a> against the community have intensified considerably over the past two years but we have managed to resist.<\/p>\n

At the moment, we continue in\u00a0negotiations to remain<\/a>\u00a0and for the upgrading\u00a0of the community. Despite\u00a0all the losses we have experienced\u00a0(social, economic, and affective), this is a partial victory give the\u00a0difficult current scenario for popular movements. We know that there is still a lot to be done (the upgrading\u00a0and construction of new homes\u00a0has not yet begun) and so we remain vigilant.<\/p>\n

Given\u00a0all this history of\u00a0resistance over the last 20 years, we cannot allow our struggle to gain rights to the city<\/a> and to stay on the lands where our lives were built to be forgotten. And so, in partnership with this group of supporters, we have decided to build this museum together.<\/p>\n

Its purpose is to expose the\u00a0rights<\/a> violations which have occurred in different favelas\u00a0across\u00a0the city that also suffered forced\u00a0evictions and whose lives have been irrevocably changed. There will be artistic interventions\u00a0in the spaces where houses\u00a0once stood\u00a0and where\u00a0today there are\u00a0debris,\u00a0building a true\u00a0open air museum.<\/p>\n

This action will take place during two distinct moments: firstly, via the recovery of\u00a0residents\u2019 memories<\/a>\u00a0of the history of the space; and secondly the\u00a0interventions\u00a0themselves. The recovery of\u00a0memory will take place\u00a0through an intense and fraternal dialogue between current residents, those who were removed and those who live in neighboring communities and always supported us. After this, we will organize a playful\u00a0moment involving bands\u00a0who support the community and a procession through the space, not only to demarcate\u00a0it, but to recompose\u00a0memories by\u00a0projecting them onto the space and as a result involve everyone in the rebuilding collective life.<\/p>\n

We invite everyone to take part in creating this beautiful initiative. The activities will take place Saturday April 23 beginning at 9:30am.<\/p>\n
