{"id":28384,"date":"2016-04-28T08:00:59","date_gmt":"2016-04-28T11:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=28384"},"modified":"2016-05-11T10:07:36","modified_gmt":"2016-05-11T13:07:36","slug":"vila-autodromo-progresses-with-plans-for-evictions-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=28384","title":{"rendered":"Vila Aut\u00f3dromo Progresses with Plans for Evictions Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1TQni6G\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residents and activists gathered in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/VilaAut\" target=\"_blank\">Vila Aut\u00f3dromo<\/a> this last Saturday April 23 to begin the process of creating a museum focusing on the community and its history of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1sZ22Q6\" target=\"_blank\">resistance<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Tg0lMI\" target=\"_blank\">removals<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1XKmSQq\" target=\"_blank\">Museu das Remo\u00e7\u00f5es (Evictions Museum)<\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of around 50 people including activists, residents and former residents of Vila Aut\u00f3dromo attended the event to honor the history of the community and help the museum take shape. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea of the museum, as researcher and activist Poliana Monteiro explained, is &#8220;to think about what Vila Aut\u00f3dromo was like before the evictions. The residents discussed each place they remembered and described the community and the people who lived there. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They highlighted places of interest and categorized them into three groups. The first was &#8220;sustainability,&#8221; social spaces where the residents gathered to enjoy themselves, such as a park or bakery. The second category was &#8220;community,&#8221; marking spaces used by residents in the fight against evictions. The final category was &#8220;<em>saudades<\/em>&#8221; (a Portuguese word meaning a feeling of longing or nostalgia) which marked the houses of residents who had left the community but were involved in the fight to remain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/13096205_1563695413929373_3266720325482632908_n.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28388 size-content\" title=\"Group shot of the residents and activists\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/13096205_1563695413929373_3266720325482632908_n-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"Museu das remo\u00e7\u00f5es group shot\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/13096205_1563695413929373_3266720325482632908_n-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/13096205_1563695413929373_3266720325482632908_n-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The residents then led the group around the remaining buildings of Vila Aut\u00f3dromo and the demolition sites, telling stories and describing what the community was like before demolitions began and during their long fight to remain. They marked out the plots of the houses and looked for remnants of the houses to use as focal points for the creation of museum exhibits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resident <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/21iUhCi\" target=\"_blank\">Sandra Maria<\/a> told the story of why &#8220;Associa\u00e7\u00e3o de Moradores&#8221;\u00a0(Neighborhood Association) was painted on the remaining houses after the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1TGtfVS\" target=\"_blank\">original building was demolished<\/a>: &#8220;The idea was to show that the Neighborhood\u00a0Association hadn\u2019t ended. They had destroyed the building, but the Neighborhood Association wasn\u2019t restricted to a building&#8230; it continued.
