{"id":29005,"date":"2016-05-20T06:58:18","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T09:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=29005"},"modified":"2016-05-24T07:26:33","modified_gmt":"2016-05-24T10:26:33","slug":"occupying-students-threatened-with-violence-as-negotiations-with-state-government-begin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=29005","title":{"rendered":"Occupying Students Threatened with Violence as Negotiations with State Government Begin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1TwvRl2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Students <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/24DiQNL\" target=\"_blank\">occupying public high schools<\/a> across Rio state have faced increasing levels of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1ZTuC5k\" target=\"_blank\">violence<\/a> and harassment since May 6 from groups of students against the movement.<\/p>\n<p>The occupation at the Mendes de Moraes school in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1V6gjti\" target=\"_blank\">Ilha do Governador<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1oBH22S\" target=\"_blank\">first school to be occupied<\/a> in the current wave of student protests taking place across Brazil, has been forced to disband. Students there were subject to consecutive attacks beginning on May 6 and occurring daily between May 9 and 13.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13221358_684661861672646_8852603303356612657_o.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-29007 size-content\" title=\"Students outside Mendes do Moraes resolved to reoccupy the school following the first attacks on May 9 and 10\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13221358_684661861672646_8852603303356612657_o-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"Students outside Mendes do Moraes resolved to reoccupy the school following the first attacks on May 9 and 10\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13221358_684661861672646_8852603303356612657_o-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13221358_684661861672646_8852603303356612657_o-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Alan, an 18 year-old alumnus of Mendes, said the students occupying the school building had felt increasingly intimidated by the &#8220;de-occupy&#8221; group\u2019s efforts to enter the premises. Describing the attacks occurring on May 10, Alan said students \u201cjumped over the walls and broke our padlocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe barricaded ourselves in our security room, but they were very strong and they wanted to reach us at any cost,\u201d he said. \u201cPart of the door broke and cut one student. In all the confusion, people only knew how to cry, how to keep trying to barricade the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPunches were thrown and we really didn\u2019t know what was going to happen. Students from Mendes reached a final decision to de-occupy and instead support other threatened schools on the evening of May 16.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13164480_275269676160385_4738035726307386113_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29010 size-content aligncenter\" title=\"Some of the bricks thrown through windows at Mendes school\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13164480_275269676160385_4738035726307386113_n-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"Some of the bricks thrown through windows at Mendes school\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13164480_275269676160385_4738035726307386113_n-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13164480_275269676160385_4738035726307386113_n-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Students reported that <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1JS6zYI\" target=\"_blank\">Military Police<\/a> stood by outside the school while the attacks were carried out, and rather than protecting them, the police used their presence to prevent protesting students from re-entering the empty school. Teachers at Mendes were appalled by the lack of police intervention to prevent students from physical harm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation in Mendes had become unsustainable,\u201d said Adno Soares Ferreira Jr, a teacher at the school who witnessed the attacks on May 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department of Education was terrorizing pupils and parents, saying they would miss the whole school year and instructing police not to intervene during increasingly violent attacks on the students,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Threats from &#8220;de-occupy&#8221; groups<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Mendes is one of many schools to be recently threatened by de-occupy groups. Between May 9 and 13, there were also calls on social media for support for occupied schools in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1J9l2nS\" target=\"_blank\">Bangu<\/a>\u00a0in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa7gI\" target=\"_blank\">West Zone<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1OpKF5g\" target=\"_blank\">Centro<\/a> that were facing threats from de-occupy groups.<\/p>\n<p>Leonardo, a student at Amaro Cavalcante school in Largo do Machado in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pfz23A\" target=\"_blank\">South Zone<\/a>, said he wasn\u2019t surprised that schools outside the South Zone were facing more violent threats than his own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMendes was always going to receive more threats purely by being the first to occupy,\u201d Leonardo argued. \u201cIt\u2019s a school facing very precarious conditions and with a huge lack of materials. But it\u2019s also a school in the outskirts\u00a0of Rio, with comparatively little visibility which makes it much easier to attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amaro Cavalcante is one of many other schools to face opposition, with organized Facebook groups against the occupation. Nonetheless, some students have attributed an increase in threats and violence to SEEDUC\u2019s deleted tweet (pictured above).<\/p>\n<p>Students at Amaro Cavalcante have opened dialogue with those against the occupations, who claim that the conditions students are protesting against do not apply to their school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe occupation isn\u2019t just something for me,\u201d said Leonardo, who is in his final year at Amaro Cavalcante. \u201cEvery time we speak to students against the movement, they leave on our side. The recently introduced evaluation system, SAERJ, will finish at the end of this school year to align with budget cuts, and students will be able to top up their free bus cards on a monthly basis rather than weekly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13217075_937823856350_6938792273368566056_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-29016 size-content\" title=\"Students found tens of thousands of new books that had not been distributed in Amaro school, Largo do Machado\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13217075_937823856350_6938792273368566056_o-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"Students found tens of thousands of new books that had not been distributed in Amaro school, Largo do Machado\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13217075_937823856350_6938792273368566056_o-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/13217075_937823856350_6938792273368566056_o-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Leonardo voiced skepticism regarding the announcement, calling SAERJ a \u201cfictitious measure used to produce statistics rather than a quality education.\u201d He felt the changes to the bus card would make little difference to students\u2019 lives, and questioned how any state government could produce an accurate replica of the national, federal Enem examination.<\/p>\n<p>He also said that the directors chosen and imposed by governments are frequently absent. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen the guy,\u201d he said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t tell you if he\u2019s black or white, yet he\u2019s my school director.
