Supporters and residents gathered in Vila Aut\u00f3dromo<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday, May 18, to celebrate the launch\u00a0of a new\u00a0open air museum, the Museu das Remo\u00e7\u00f5es, or Evictions\u00a0Museum<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seven exhibits were built using materials left behind from demolitions. The exhibits each honor a building or home that was demolished, as well as the wider struggle that residents of the community faced.<\/p>\n

\"Neighborhood<\/a><\/p>\n

One\u00a0exhibit was installed on the site of the Neighborhood\u00a0Association, which was demolished<\/a> in February of this year. The building held great symbolic importance in the community, but as resident Sandra Maria<\/a> explained:<\/p>\n

“We talked a lot at the time about how\u00a0they were destroying the building, but that the Neighborhood\u00a0Association would continue… The Association was much more than a building, it went far beyond that. It is the organization<\/a> of the residents. When you see residents organized, united, having discussions, fighting together, then the Neighborhood\u00a0Association is still alive.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Olympic<\/a><\/p>\n

An Olympic torch made of debris formed the exhibit outside the Catholic Church, one of the only buildings left standing in the community that was previously home to 600 families. The church has been\u00a0important meeting space for years, and\u00a0particularly after the Neighborhood\u00a0Association was demolished. Luis and Maria da Penha moved into the church after their home was destroyed<\/a>\u00a0in March. The exhibit has elements of iron and concrete, representing the strength of the community’s resistance<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Children's<\/a><\/p>\n

Another exhibit was built\u00a0from the remains of the children’s park, or Parquinho, which had been\u00a0revitalized by residents<\/a>\u00a0last November. \u201cLots of stories, lots of memories were made in this park. Of the children, and also in the process of resistance against removal. Lots of things happened in this park… Here we received\u00a0groups of human rights representatives from all around\u00a0the world,” said Sandra Maria. Other events included the launch of Raquel Rolnik\u2019s book<\/a>\u00a0War of Places: The Colonization of Land and Housing in the Financial Era<\/em><\/a>, and the launches of the People’s Plan<\/a>, the community’s award-winning<\/a> upgrading plan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Evictions<\/a><\/p>\n

The museum was launched on International Museum Day, and hopes to be an example to\u00a0other communities facing similar struggles. <\/span><\/p>\n

The idea of the museum is to be a testament to the struggle of the community during the long process of eviction<\/a> and to preserve and honor this memory. “We\u2019ve made it to this point now, and it\u2019s not right that everything [the community] went through be forgotten<\/a>,” said resident Luiz Claudio Silva.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
