{"id":29892,"date":"2016-07-19T11:11:45","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T14:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=29892"},"modified":"2016-07-27T17:22:56","modified_gmt":"2016-07-27T20:22:56","slug":"rio-das-pedras-dance-class-empowers-women-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=29892","title":{"rendered":"Unconventional and Inspiring, Rio das Pedras Dance Class Empowers Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2axG1Hq\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The women here are warriors,&#8221; say countless residents\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1qykzxl\" target=\"_blank\">Rio das Pedras<\/a>, a favela neighborhood in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa7gI\" target=\"_blank\">West Zone<\/a> of Rio de Janeiro, and Flavio Moraes\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29lMGPY\" target=\"_blank\">dance<\/a> class is one of the few spaces where women can be recognized as just that. Twice a week more than 30\u00a0women fill up a room at<em>\u00a0<\/em>the Start Academia gym to\u00a0receive more than just a workout; they gain self-empowerment and solidarity with other women.<\/p>\n<p>A resident of the neighboring West Zone favela\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wwjhWi\" target=\"_blank\">City of God<\/a>, Flavio has been leading dance classes for over 32\u00a0years. At the age of three, Flavio enrolled in theater and ballet lessons and pursued\u00a0a career as a classical ballet dancer\u00a0as well as a professional actor. His work with ballet and theater, both of which he continues to this day, led him to teach dance classes at gyms in Rio das Pedras, one of Rio&#8217;s largest favelas, and Freguesia, a middle-class West Zone neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/12493556_10207284829951694_2428300392400282289_o1_Easy-Resize.com_.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-29898 size-content\" title=\"Flavio Moraes' dance class in Rio das Pedras\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/12493556_10207284829951694_2428300392400282289_o1_Easy-Resize.com_-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"Flavio Moraes' dance class in Rio das Pedras\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/12493556_10207284829951694_2428300392400282289_o1_Easy-Resize.com_-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/12493556_10207284829951694_2428300392400282289_o1_Easy-Resize.com_-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Flavio&#8217;s\u00a0work with dance as a form of empowerment for women began with his perception of gyms as obsessed with the idea of losing weight. \u201cI began to notice that inside gyms there is a lot of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/28UUXem\" target=\"_blank\">sexism<\/a>\u00a0among the professionals themselves,\u201d he explains. Flavio realized\u00a0that common phrases heard in the gym such as \u201csummer is coming\u201d and \u201cyou have to be sexy\u201d may prevent a woman from accepting herself\u00a0if she\u2019s outside of\u00a0male-imposed\u00a0standards of beauty and desirability.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Flavio\u2019s classes became a form of group therapy out of necessity. By bringing articles to class and promoting\u00a0messages of self-assurance, Flavio hopes those who attend his class \u201clearn to respect themselves, learn to respect their freedom\u2026 and learn to love themselves above anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From the clothes he wears to the strategically chosen music, Flavio works\u00a0to make women feel safe and able to let loose within each class. He often dresses up in makeup, heels, and short dresses to make outside eyes fall on him instead of on any wrong dance moves made by his students. With regards to music, Flavio \u201conly stretches to Brazilian music, because while [the group] is warming up [he] wants them to think, \u2018I identify with this.\u2019\u201d At the beginning of class, Flavio avoids <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1mTRj32\" target=\"_blank\">funk<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1NPmq1c\" target=\"_blank\">pagode<\/a> which often \u201chave sexist lyrics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><script>\/\/ <![CDATA[\n(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = \"\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&#038;version=v2.6&#038;appId=1407776759470584\"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Rio das Pedras resident and class participant Jeanne Brandao da Cruz says Flavio&#8217;s class is about\u00a0more than just exercise for her: &#8220;I go for many reasons, one reason is for exercise, but also to release energy because his class has such a positive energy.&#8221; After classes,\u00a0&#8220;I feel relieved, light, I leave feeling more extroverted, and I can&#8217;t stop talking about his class because it&#8217;s so good,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>His students are not the only ones who gain from his classes\u2014Flavio himself says: \u201cIn\u00a0every class, I discover sides of myself\u00a0that I haven\u2019t seen before, that were sleeping, that didn&#8217;t exist, or that came to life through [the women who\u00a0attend my classes].\u201d He\u00a0says through his students he is constantly re-learning to respect women, to value them, and to allow them to shape the course of his classes.<\/p>\n<p>Flavio\u2019s dance classes transcend the idea that female empowerment only occurs in formal spaces. When each class ends with the message that \u201cno one can love you more than you love yourself,\u201d women leave the local and everyday space of the gym feeling confident.
