{"id":30068,"date":"2016-06-29T09:00:47","date_gmt":"2016-06-29T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=30068"},"modified":"2016-07-04T04:12:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-04T07:12:00","slug":"rocinha-sem-fronteiras-debates-the-role-of-community-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=30068","title":{"rendered":"Rocinha Sem Fronteiras Debates the Role of Community Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29maOVY\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Saturday evening, June 25, in a small church in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1m4JS9c\" target=\"_blank\">Rocinha<\/a>\u00a0favela in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pfz23A\" target=\"_blank\">South Zone<\/a> of\u00a0Rio de Janeiro, a group of around 25 people debated the role of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1nCyg4U\" target=\"_blank\">community media<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1UxJWhC\" target=\"_blank\">Rocinha Sem Fronteiras<\/a>, a community group\u00a0that gathers once a month to address different topics concerning the favela, hosted the discussion with journalists from community media outlets\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/209cc33\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Jornal Fala Ro\u00e7a<\/em><\/a>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/11LkstS\" target=\"_blank\">Viva Rocinha<\/a><\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/295k7tW\" target=\"_blank\"><em>TV Tagalera<\/em><\/a>, and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/295kpku\" target=\"_blank\">FavelaDaRocinha.com<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur ideology is to emphasize the people, make a difference here&#8230; so our focus has always been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1tk7TUq\" target=\"_blank\">community communications<\/a>,\u201d said Leandro Lima, Rocinha resident and journalist from FavelaDaRocinha.com. Much of the reporting done by the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1T0bJYZ\" target=\"_blank\">alternative media<\/a> in favelas relates to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/VsQjMj\" target=\"_blank\">arts<\/a> and issues such as <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1upL4KU\" target=\"_blank\">sanitation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1yHzFH2\" target=\"_blank\">education<\/a>, and basic <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1ys5C9X\" target=\"_blank\">health<\/a> needs. These are topics the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1fQ8pm8\" target=\"_blank\">mainstream media<\/a> in Rio de Janeiro tend to overlook, instead\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1tKsXCf\" target=\"_blank\">focusing instead on violence and crime<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Rocinha-Sem-Fronteiras-3.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30073 size-large\" title=\"Rocinha Sem Fronteiras debates the role of community media\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Rocinha-Sem-Fronteiras-3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Rocinha Sem Fronteiras debates the role of community media\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Rocinha-Sem-Fronteiras-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Rocinha-Sem-Fronteiras-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Rocinha-Sem-Fronteiras-3-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the debate, several Rocinha residents said they wanted to read more about national and political news in their local media. They also questioned why their local media did not choose to report on the negative\u00a0aspects of life in Rocinha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it is really\u00a0important for us to report on what is positive,\u201d said longtime Rocinha resident and author, Francisca Oliveira, but\u00a0said that she wished the local media would talk about deeper problems in\u00a0the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another Rocinha resident, Roberto Lucena, agreed with Oliveira\u00a0and mentioned that there was a journalistic silence within the community media when it came to certain topics such as crime. Lucena asked if Rocinha journalists feared a backlash if they told more such\u00a0stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe try to not reproduce the argument from mainstream media that the favela is a place of problems, a place of death, I don\u2019t know what. We try to talk about another kind of violence, like <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/XS2raO\" target=\"_blank\">lack of basic sanitation<\/a>&#8230; we are trying to enhance culture and show what we have of value here inside [the favela], what we have constructed at the margins of society, what we are able to do that is good,\u201d said Cleber Araujo, a journalist and communications consultant at TV Tagalera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Rocinha-Sem-Fronteiras-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30072 size-large\" title=\"Rocinha Sem Fronteiras debates community media\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Rocinha-Sem-Fronteiras-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Rocinha Sem Fronteiras debates community media\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Rocinha-Sem-Fronteiras-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Rocinha-Sem-Fronteiras-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Rocinha-Sem-Fronteiras-2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The journalists discussed how readers are bombarded with stories about the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1vxXakT\" target=\"_blank\">drug traffic<\/a>\u00a0in favelas, and how the alternative media in Rocinha wants to change the sensationalist <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1MoIGcv\" target=\"_blank\">mainstream media narrative<\/a>. But their main objective is to report news that is relevant to Rocinha residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople want to know what mainstream media doesn\u2019t show,\u201d said Leandro Lima. All the journalists agreed that they worked to produce detailed, in-depth stories, to fully flesh out their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are not going to be like mass media and touch on a topic and leave.
