{"id":30374,"date":"2016-07-12T10:25:06","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T13:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=30374"},"modified":"2023-08-23T12:20:54","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T15:20:54","slug":"anti-olympics-protests-gather-pace-in-rio-de-janeiro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=30374","title":{"rendered":"Anti-Olympics Protests Gather Pace in Rio de Janeiro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29QURY5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>A series of anti-Olympics protests have been held and are being organized in\u00a0Rio de Janeiro as the Games approach.<\/h4>\n<p>On Tuesday night, July 5, hundreds of Brazilians gathered in front of the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (Alerj)\u00a0to protest against the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1JInIcG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">human rights violations<\/a> related to the Olympic Games. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29sPFG9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">O Povo Sem Medo<\/a>\u00a0(The People without Fear) and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29suWmB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rio 2016 &#8211; Os Jogos da Exclus\u00e3o<\/a>\u00a0(Rio 2016 &#8211; The Exclusion Games) organized the event called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29H9HjH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olympic Calamity &#8211; 30 Days until the Exclusion Games<\/a>.&#8221; The event description on Facebook says: &#8220;There&#8217;s money to finance the mega-event, meanwhile the salaries of public sector workers are delayed and the public&#8217;s basic services are cut. <a href=\"http:\/\/wapo.st\/21rPVK5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[The State] is in crisis<\/a>, but will receive billions from [Interim President] Temer&#8217;s government solely for <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29r2Afi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repression<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to compensate\u00a0and recognize all the human rights violations that have occurred within the framework of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pXMFVa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olympic Games<\/a>,\u201d said Lara Martins, a 24-year-old international relations student at the Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ) who attended the protest.<\/p>\n<p>Martins does not want the Games canceled but would like the IOC to create an international pact to restrict where future Olympic Games can be held: in areas where human rights are respected and where the Games would not worsen the lives of locals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Tg0lMI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forced evictions<\/a>\u00a0of Rio&#8217;s favelas, poor labor conditions for workers, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1k3YzNi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">police violence<\/a> are some of the issues linked to the sporting event. After the peaceful protest there was an incident of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29sQGhc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">police brutality at the Uruguaiana metro station<\/a> where journalists and civilians were choke-held and thrown to the ground.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/13567429_359233174200264_4203930357647977908_n.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30402\" title=\"Photo from the Rio 2016 - Os Jogos de Exclus\u00e3o Facebook page\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/13567429_359233174200264_4203930357647977908_n.jpg\" alt=\"Photo from the Rio 2016 - Os Jogos de Exclus\u00e3o Facebook page\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/13567429_359233174200264_4203930357647977908_n.jpg 960w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/13567429_359233174200264_4203930357647977908_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/13567429_359233174200264_4203930357647977908_n-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/13567429_359233174200264_4203930357647977908_n-174x131.jpg 174w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/13567429_359233174200264_4203930357647977908_n-70x53.jpg 70w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/13567429_359233174200264_4203930357647977908_n-326x245.jpg 326w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A second street demonstration was held in downtown Rio on Wednesday July 6\u00a0against issues related to the Olympics and cuts to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1dsHC6r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1yHzFH2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">education<\/a>, and was attended by public sector workers including the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29hj0Xm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teachers&#8217; union who are currently striking<\/a> for better conditions and pay.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday July 7 there was a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29PpOgC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">march and debate against the Olympics<\/a> and related issues at the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) next to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ZccdB3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maracan\u00e3 Stadium<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa3h9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Zone<\/a> of the city. Around 80 people marched and attended a debate on cuts to essential public services and Olympics-related violations. The panel included lawyer and professor <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29Gofym\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexandre Ferreira Magalh\u00e3es<\/a> and Inalva Mendes, an evicted resident of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/szghey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vila Aut\u00f3dromo<\/a> and member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1p58Mry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Popular Committee on\u00a0the World Cup and Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Further protests and events are being organized for the coming weeks, including centralized city demonstrations and community-organized protests in favelas that have been affected by the Games.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday July 16, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1CFBPI0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coletivo Papo Reto<\/a> and community newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1csTRH2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jornal Voz das Comunidades<\/a> will hold a protest event entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29xUrrq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Our Olympic Torch<\/a>&#8221; in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1nEeBwu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>: &#8220;Due to the complex situation in Rio de Janeiro at the moment, caused by the Olympics, part of the city parties while another part\u2013like our favela and many others\u2013bleeds.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrations are already being organized for the week of the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, with <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29I3OEA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five days of activism<\/a> planned from August 1 to 5. The Facebook event entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29xWprJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Let&#8217;s Extinguish the Torch in Rio!<\/a>&#8221; to be held on August 2 already expects\u00a0over 14,000 attendees. A large demonstration is being organized for the day of the Opening Ceremony, with various Facebook events counting a potential attendance of thousands of protesters. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29rnMCJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rio 2016 &#8211; The Exclusion Games protest<\/a>\u00a0event description reads: &#8220;In a city where the chasm of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1qbJV72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inequality<\/a> grows and grows, on the basis of tanks, gunshots and bombs, it&#8217;s fundamental to advance and pursue the fight for the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1SsnfR0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">right to the city<\/a>, democracy and social justice.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas A series of anti-Olympics protests have been held and are being organized in\u00a0Rio de Janeiro as the Games approach.
