{"id":31347,"date":"2016-09-09T10:26:01","date_gmt":"2016-09-09T13:26:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=31347"},"modified":"2018-01-15T13:07:39","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T16:07:39","slug":"community-media-profile-girasol-comunicacoes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=31347","title":{"rendered":"Community Media Profile: Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2gzwGzT\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marlon Gangazumba and his Chilean partner Natalia Urbina are videographers, photographers, activists, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Ow5Ore\" target=\"_blank\">capoeira<\/a> instructors. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2atgfPe\" target=\"_blank\">Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es<\/a>\u00a0was born in 2012 when they organized a center for popular communication after frequently being asked to film community events. They started <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2awnDgK\" target=\"_blank\">blogging<\/a>\u2014in both Portuguese and Spanish\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about debates and events happening in Marlon&#8217;s home\u00a0favela of Jorge Turco in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa3h9\" target=\"_blank\">North Zone<\/a> of Rio de Janeiro, with topics including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aM7MeH\" target=\"_blank\">capoeira<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2awqlTo\" target=\"_blank\">World Cup<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ar7Pdh\" target=\"_blank\">poetry<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bZZA9k\" target=\"_blank\">reparations for slavery<\/a>, and most recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cm0EYy\" target=\"_blank\">community media and local activism<\/a> in the context of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/NiGX0D\" target=\"_blank\">Olympics<\/a>. Along with their three children, the pair have now published more than 50 videos on <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ar7yXR\" target=\"_blank\">their YouTube channel<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and have facilitated many community debates. They also\u00a0maintained a radio channel throughout the World Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGirasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es arose as a family initiative of autonomous <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1nCyg4U\" target=\"_blank\">popular communication<\/a> addressing the need to disseminate what happens in favelas, such as different cultural and political activities,&#8221; Urbina explained. It also emerged out of a &#8220;need to strengthen\u00a0our <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/VsQjMj\" target=\"_blank\">local culture<\/a>, which bit by bit strengthens our racial outlook, our Latin American outlook, our Afro-American outlook.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"SOS BABIL\u00d4NIA\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q8Yu1pwk20U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Girasol&#8221; with one <em>s\u00a0<\/em>is Spanish for sunflower (spelled with two in Portuguese).\u00a0Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es therefore translates to &#8220;sunflower communications.&#8221; Urbina said the initiative\u00a0created new ways of conceiving of popular communication\u00a0&#8220;by mixing our academic and professional forms with our everyday lives, as well as discovering the truth in our <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2c3FMBc\" target=\"_blank\">African diaspora<\/a> and Latin American identities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <em>RioOnWatch\u00a0<\/em>interviewed\u00a0Urbina in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1CSCYi2\" target=\"_blank\">Babil\u00f4nia<\/a>, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pfz23A\" target=\"_blank\">South Zone<\/a>, she arrived carrying her newborn daughter. Rather than only sitting down for a traditional interview, she preferred to talk while visiting\u00a0a local bakery, checking out a community book borrowing\u00a0stand, and stopping by the school her children attend. Afterwards Urbina explained that to understand Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es, one has\u00a0to understand the favela. Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es does not exist in isolation, she says, but\u00a0is an extended voice of community residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Chapeu-Mangueira-Festa-Juninha.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31353 size-content\" title=\"Chap\u00e9u-Mangueira, the community next to Babil\u00f4nia, is decorated for Festa Junina celebrations\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Chapeu-Mangueira-Festa-Juninha-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"Chap\u00e9u-Mangueira, the community next to Babil\u00f4nia, is decorated for Festa Junina celebrations\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Chapeu-Mangueira-Festa-Juninha-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Chapeu-Mangueira-Festa-Juninha-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During <em>RioOnWatch<\/em>&#8216;s visit, Urbina also <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bwyLqu\" target=\"_blank\">conducted an\u00a0interview<\/a> with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1eqkuOm\" target=\"_blank\">Andr\u00e9 Constantine, the president of Babil\u00f4nia&#8217;s Neighborhood Association<\/a>. Andr\u00e9 expressed skepticism towards journalists, scholars, and other\u00a0outsiders who come to favelas\u2014particularly Babil\u00f4nia, which is at particular risk of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1l6Oo5g\" target=\"_blank\">gentrification<\/a>\u2014to excavate information. But he enthusiastically discussed <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ahBidw\" target=\"_blank\">racial justice<\/a>, reparations for <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Lzfam3\" target=\"_blank\">slavery<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1OQHcc5\" target=\"_blank\">feminism<\/a>, and the Olympics with Urbina.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMedia by favela residents respects our protagonism,\u201d said Urbina. Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es is &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">favela media&#8221; because the narrative is always from the inside out. It ignores outsiders&#8217; perspectives looking in, and instead amplifies the stories and news of the favela, maintaining the protagonism and dignity of favela residents. Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es disseminates \u201cimages that fortify the cultural identity of each place,&#8221; with a particular focus on &#8220;those brothers of the African diaspora, to the sisters who have children, to workers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Urbina, community media is also about <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1LWHKNG\" target=\"_blank\">democratizing the creation of media<\/a>: \u201cPopular communication says that you can communicate with whatever you have. If you don\u2019t have a computer, use a poster; if you don\u2019t have a poster, use a megaphone; if you don\u2019t have a megaphone, shout! The richness is not in the audio-visual production, but in the discourse.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When favela residents\u00a0ask for assistance with written communication, Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es publishes messages exactly as the speakers present them. There is no need to correct grammar too much, Urbina explained. Instead Girasol keeps the dignity and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1h6Zk8a\" target=\"_blank\">language of the people<\/a>; the message gets across, and no one feels silenced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Posters-as-local-communication.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31352 size-content\" title=\"Urbina points to the effective and local form of communicating by posters\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Posters-as-local-communication-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"Urbina points to the effective and local form of communicating by posters\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Posters-as-local-communication-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Posters-as-local-communication-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es is \u201cworking with different black liberation groups, documenting all that occurs in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2at83Vp\" target=\"_blank\">fight for reparations<\/a> for the enslavement of black and indigenous people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though we have supported over 17 projects, we have not earned anything,\u201d Urbina said. To cover expenses, Urbina and Gangazumba sell cakes, breads, sweets, photography services, and teach capoeira. Finding resources and funds is a challenge though. While they kept a live radio program throughout the World Cup with one computer, it became very difficult to work on any other projects. Thus the pair now only revive the radio station during pivotal periods. Despite these difficulties, Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es proves every day that anybody can communicate.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of Girasol Comunica\u00e7\u00f5es is in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1yHzFH2\" target=\"_blank\">education<\/a> and a focus on youth. \u201cWe are launching\u00a0a YouTube channel for children.
