{"id":31945,"date":"2016-08-19T12:47:55","date_gmt":"2016-08-19T15:47:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=31945"},"modified":"2016-08-26T15:46:17","modified_gmt":"2016-08-26T18:46:17","slug":"vila-autodromo-shares-history-of-resistance-with-alternative-olympic-celebration-and-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=31945","title":{"rendered":"Vila Aut\u00f3dromo &#8216;Occupies&#8217; the Olympic Park with Celebration and Protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2blISo8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last\u00a0Saturday, August 13,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1o6rEIS\" target=\"_blank\">Vila Aut\u00f3dromo<\/a> hosted the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bmS8ou\" target=\"_blank\">Vila Aut\u00f3dromo Ocupa Olimp\u00edada<\/a>\u00a0(Vila Aut\u00f3dromo Occupies the Olympics) event &#8220;to reaffirm its territory, its existence, its resistance and its re-existence.&#8221; More than 100 residents and supporters gathered there to share information and enjoy a celebration of solidarity and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1sZ22Q6\" target=\"_blank\">resistance<\/a>\u00a0that started in the afternoon and\u00a0went well into the night.<\/p>\n<p>The event was an expression of the longstanding history and struggle faced by the community in the years leading up to the 2016 Games.\u00a0The community wrote on the Facebook event page:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The Exclusion Games have arrived and the &#8216;Olympic party&#8217; is happening on all sides\u2013but we weren&#8217;t invited!<\/p>\n<p>We paid for the Olympic Games with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1FLcuNj\" target=\"_blank\">violent eviction<\/a> of most of our community&#8217;s residents. For years we were subjected to all kinds of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Y9FwBw\" target=\"_blank\">pressure<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1IpW5pM\" target=\"_blank\">threats<\/a> from the City, that tried every way it could to finish with Vila Aut\u00f3dromo.<\/p>\n<p>We resisted. And we&#8217;re the ones who will tell this story.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Ocupa-Olimpiadas.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31982\" title=\"Protestors prepare to mobilize\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Ocupa-Olimpiadas.jpg\" alt=\"Protestors prepare to mobilize\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Located just a five minute walk away from the Olympic Park in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1EJxTst\" target=\"_blank\">Barra da Tijuca<\/a>\u00a0in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa7gI\" target=\"_blank\">West Zone<\/a>, the community offered an alternative to the polished displays of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pXMFVa\" target=\"_blank\">Rio 2016 Olympic Games<\/a>. Prominently on display were the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/28Jd7Ar\" target=\"_blank\">Evictions Museum<\/a>\u00a0installations, which offered community-designed depictions of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pO06YP\" target=\"_blank\">forced evictions<\/a> that have reduced\u00a0a community of almost 700 families down to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ayGPcR\" target=\"_blank\">now just 20<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Residents were in the streets too, offering their accounts of how the Olympics affected their lives, as well as how they plan on moving forward now that they have finally moved into their on-location, government-built housing. Police and Olympic officials made their presence felt, driving through the community sporadically, requiring attendees to remove the event decorations in the streets to allow them to pass. Despite this, however, the event maintained a positive atmosphere, complete with freshly prepared food, drinks and music.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the evening, as live performers prepared to play for the event, some of the group went to the Olympic Park to carry out an act of resistance and to raise awareness. One banner read \u201cIt&#8217;s the state that&#8217;s the terrorist,\u201d which protesters argue is not just regarding the endemic issues of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1k3YzNi\" target=\"_blank\">police brutality<\/a>\u00a0and intimidation, but also the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1SQPOTc\" target=\"_blank\">failure to supply public services<\/a>. One demonstrator said: &#8220;The state itself causes the terror <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1svBsh6\" target=\"_blank\">when it doesn&#8217;t provide<\/a>\u00a0healthcare, education, basic sanitation.
