{"id":32031,"date":"2016-08-20T10:02:41","date_gmt":"2016-08-20T13:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=32031"},"modified":"2016-08-21T12:55:42","modified_gmt":"2016-08-21T15:55:42","slug":"rios-hometown-olympians-showcase-favelas-athletic-potential","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=32031","title":{"rendered":"Rio&#8217;s Hometown Olympians Showcase Favelas&#8217; Athletic Potential"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2b9Azpm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aNazBZ\" target=\"_blank\">Rafaela Silva<\/a> threw her hands into the air to celebrate\u00a0her victory in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pXMFVa\" target=\"_blank\">Olympic<\/a> gold-medal match of\u00a0women&#8217;s judo, residents, athletes and coaches throughout Rio&#8217;s favelas celebrated with her.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wapo.st\/2aNTtlo\" target=\"_blank\">Much\u00a0has already been written<\/a> about 24-year-old\u00a0Rafaela\u00a0and what her victory represents for Brazil, the city of Rio, and <a href=\"http:\/\/on.wsj.com\/2boawMa\" target=\"_blank\">female athletes across the country<\/a>. Her high-profile achievement\u00a0has <a href=\"http:\/\/huff.to\/2bjgOPG\">opened a dialogue<\/a> about\u00a0how Rafaela&#8217;s\u00a0identity\u2013as a black woman born and raised\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wwjhWi\" target=\"_blank\">City of God<\/a>, one of the city\u2019s most well-known favelas\u2013defies <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1UuZTXK\" target=\"_blank\">Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0historic power structures<\/a>, especially important in the light of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wapo.st\/2b3wmIB\" target=\"_blank\">racist attacks directed against her<\/a> on social media after she was disqualified from the 2012 London Games. Rafaela&#8217;s\u00a0decision to <a href=\"http:\/\/huff.to\/2bjgPU5\" target=\"_blank\">publicly disclose her relationship with her girlfriend<\/a> just days after her victory added another level of identity politics to what was <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bPX9JB\" target=\"_blank\">already a significant accomplishment<\/a>\u00a0in raising the profile of underrepresented and marginalized groups in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>But, while Rafaela received the most media attention, she wasn&#8217;t\u00a0the only athlete from Rio\u2019s favelas competing in these Olympics. The hometown team included a number of athletes across a diverse range of sports who have lived and trained in favelas.<\/p>\n<p>The Olympics and previous <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1CyLaE2\" target=\"_blank\">mega-events<\/a> have had catastrophic effects for\u00a0many favela residents, from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pO06YP\" target=\"_blank\">forced evictions<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bv0oEw\" target=\"_blank\">reduced access to\u00a0transportation<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1k3YzNi\">deadly police violence<\/a>. Yet the opportunity to represent their communities in front of a national audience as well as\u00a0millions of viewers around the world, provided a chance for Rio&#8217;s\u00a0athletes\u00a0to showcase another <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1uzrg79\" target=\"_blank\">example of positive value<\/a>\u00a0coming from favelas and their residents.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Patrick Borges and Michel Louren\u00e7o &#8211; Boxing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Patrick and Michel grew up in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/T5QI5Q\" target=\"_blank\">Vidigal<\/a>\u00a0in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pfz23A\" target=\"_blank\">South Zone<\/a>, where they began their training at the community&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1J5wY92\">Instituto Todos na Luta<\/a>\u00a0(All in the Fight Institute) boxing gym\u2013Michel at 10 years old and Patrick at age 13. Their trainer, the founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1I5lHWf\" target=\"_blank\">Todos na Luta<\/a>, Raff Giglio, describes\u00a0the two young athletes as a positive example for youth in their community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen so many <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2brHqjd\" target=\"_blank\">comments on Facebook<\/a> in the last few days, everyone saying, &#8216;you are the pride of the community,'&#8221; he says, smiling. &#8220;Everyone here says they are a source of pride for our community. They&#8217;re an example that it&#8217;s possible to make it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Ftodosnaluta%2Fphotos%2Fa.407408142605696.106321.314704885209356%2F1261934817153020%2F%3Ftype%3D3&amp;width=500\" width=\"620\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Raff, 51, a former boxer himself, began training children and youth in Vidigal in 1993, when he moved his boxing gym to the bottom of the hill and provided additional boxing\u00a0classes, free of charge, to youth from the community who could not afford to pay for instruction. Though Todos na Luta only formally\u00a0registered as an NGO six years ago, Raff and other instructors\u00a0have been providing this training for more than two decades.<\/p>\n<p>The primary goal of the organization, Raff says, is to encourage positive youth development. Life skills come first, athletic skills second.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think developing good human beings is even more important than being a gold medalist,&#8221; he says. &#8220;This is very important. And if someone also has talent, then they can become a [professional] athlete.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_3422-e1471642288223.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32087 size-content\" title=\"Raff Giglio supervises a training session at his gym.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_3422-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"Raff Giglio supervises a training session at his gym.\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When he and other trainers do\u00a0spot promising talent, like Patrick and Michel, they enter them in a special training program to prepare them for\u00a0competition at the highest national and international levels.<\/p>\n<p>As teenagers, Patrick and Michel\u00a0watched the success of Esquiva Falc\u00e3o, a middleweight boxer\u00a0from Esp\u00edrito Santo state who trained at Todos na Luta from 2007-2008, before joining the Brazilian national team. In 2012, Esquiva won the silver medal\u00a0at the London Olympics, inspiring his younger friends\u00a0to aim for\u00a0the winner&#8217;s podium in their home city.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2016 Olympics, Michel, now 25, reached\u00a0the quarterfinal bout in his weight class\u2013just one step away from at least a bronze medal\u2013before being eliminated by the eventual gold-medal winner, Julio C\u00e9sar La Cruz, from Cuba. Patrick, 23, who ranked eighth in the world in his weight class, lost his first match to Colombian Yuberjen Mart\u00ednez, who went on to win the silver medal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/patrick-michel.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32079\" title=\"Patrick and Michel training together. Photo via Patrick Louren\u00e7o Facebook page.\" width=\"620\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/patrick-michel.jpg 720w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/patrick-michel-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, Raff says, though neither boxer won an Olympic medal, their achievements are worth celebrating.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel compensated, I feel rewarded,&#8221; he says. &#8220;My reward came when I saw our athletes, who came here as children and today are men, Olympic athletes, participating in the Olympics. Regardless of medals, just the fact of being there, an athlete reaching that level, for me that is already compensation enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During their Olympic bouts, Raff says, the whole community threw a party\u00a0and gathered to watch them fight.\u00a0Both boxers\u00a0now live in S\u00e3o Paulo, where they train with the Brazilian national team, but\u00a0often return to Vidigal to visit family, friends, and their former gym.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They have homes, family, everything here,&#8221; says Raff. &#8220;When they have a free weekend, or holidays, they come to Vidigal and stay here, they come to train at the academy. Their home is Vidigal. They live in S\u00e3o Paulo because that&#8217;s their workplace, that&#8217;s where their office is. Their home is here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Raff, the athletes are already beginning to prepare for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. This time, he expects both of them to bring medals home to Vidigal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_3372-e1471642273450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32086 size-content\" title=\"The wall next to the boxing ring at Todos na Luta.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_3372-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"The wall next to the boxing ring at Todos na Luta.\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ygor Coelho and Lohaynny Vicente &#8211; Badminton<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ygor Coelho de Oliveira&#8217;s father, Sebasti\u00e3o Oliveira, founded the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aEsLAw\" target=\"_blank\">Miratus Badminton Association<\/a> in the Chacrinha favela, located in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1jfeZUX\" target=\"_blank\">Jacarepagu\u00e1<\/a> in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa7gI\" target=\"_blank\">West Zone<\/a>, in 1998. Miratus has received plenty of attention during this Olympic season from outlets including <em>CNN<\/em> and the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/nyti.ms\/2b3yspW\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a><\/em>, and as one of the five organizations with a feature film\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aHtIYY\" target=\"_blank\">in the Reimagine Rio Film Festival<\/a>. Sebasti\u00e3o instructs\u00a0200 players between the ages of 4 and\u00a020 through an\u00a0innovative training regime that\u00a0combines badminton with samba\u2013adding a unique Rio\u00a0twist\u00a0to the traditional\u00a0practice\u00a0of jumping rope. According to Sebasti\u00e3o, the children found\u00a0jump rope boring, but samba has managed to hold the attention of\u00a0more than\u00a03,000 students over the school&#8217;s\u00a018 years of existence, and the technique has already produced two Olympic athletes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/1385727_368399686625642_510219592_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32092\" title=\"Ygor Coelho with some of his medals. He is already a six-time champion in the Pan American junior boys singles, and has won the Pan American championship in mixed doubles four times playing with his Olympic counterpart, 20-year-old Lohaynny Vicente.<\/p>\n<p>Lohaynny, the top-ranked Brazilian female badminton player, is also a graduate of Miratus.\u00a0She won silver and bronze medals in the 2015 Pan American Games\u2013the silver came playing with her older\u00a0sister, Luana, who has been her doubles partner since the two began training at Miratus. The Vicente sisters joined the school\u00a0when they <a href=\"http:\/\/glo.bo\/2b5i1q6\" target=\"_blank\">moved to Chacrinha<\/a> in 2002, leaving the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1U6o0yV\" target=\"_blank\">Complexo do\u00a0Chapad\u00e3o<\/a>\u00a0in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa3h9\" target=\"_blank\">North Zone<\/a>\u00a0following the death of their father, who was involved in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1vxXakT\" target=\"_blank\">drug trafficking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Lohaynny-Vicente.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32104\" title=\"Lohaynny Vicente competing at Rio 2016\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Lohaynny-Vicente.jpg\" alt=\"Lohaynny Vicente competing at Rio 2016\" width=\"620\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Lohaynny-Vicente.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Lohaynny-Vicente-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Lohaynny-Vicente-768x571.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Lohaynny-Vicente-70x53.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though neither of the Miratus grads took home a medal at the Rio Olympics, they still enjoyed deafening\u00a0support from their hometown fans. At Ygor\u2019s final Olympic match, which he lost to 14th-ranked German Marc Zwiebler, the standing-room\u00a0crowd\u00a0cheered and chanted his name for several minutes after the match ended.<\/p>\n<p>Lohyanny was eliminated in the early rounds of the competition, but\u00a0said she was proud to be the first Brazilian woman to represent her country in Olympic badminton, and hoped to inspire other children from favelas to believe in their athletic dreams.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s good for\u00a0people to see that, independent of social class, people can achieve what they want,\u201d she told <em>Globo<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/glo.bo\/2bqOrj2\" target=\"_blank\">in an interview<\/a> following the match.<\/p>\n<p>Miratus\u2013along with its famous alumni\u2013is featured in <em>Bad &amp; the Birdieman<\/em>, one of the five documentary films recently premiered at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aHtIYY\" target=\"_blank\">Reimagine Rio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rs-Mny1TUcY\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Giovanna Pedroso &#8211; Diving<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One of the lesser-known local\u00a0athletes in the Rio\u00a0Games, 17-year-old Giovanna Pedroso grew up in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1OuvZUX\" target=\"_blank\">Ch\u00e1cara do C\u00e9u<\/a>\u00a0favela\u00a0in the South Zone. Giovanna began training in gymnastics when she was four years old, but <a href=\"http:\/\/bbc.in\/2bjkC3L\" target=\"_blank\">switched to diving<\/a> when she was ten after participating in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bmQUKd\" target=\"_blank\">Diving for the Future<\/a>,\u201d a program sponsored by Brazil\u2019s Sports Ministry and the Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports, which\u00a0offers public school students the opportunity to practice diving.<\/p>\n<p>In the years since, Giovanna has risen to represent Brazil on the world stage, winning the country\u2019s first-ever silver medal in the synchronized 10-meter platform event at last year\u2019s Pan American Games in Toronto.
