Its fifth edition, taking place just after the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pXMFVa\" target=\"_blank\">Olympics<\/a>, called attention to the creation of a new paradigm for\u00a0climate economics, thriving\u00a0cities, education for all, and whole\u00a0health\u2013the four themes of the event\u2013based on social impact and collaborative social actions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/trama.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32643 size-large\" title=\"The Prosperous Cities group during an activity on the first day\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/trama-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"The Prosperous Cities group during an activity on the first day\" width=\"620\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/trama-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/trama-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/trama-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/trama-580x326.jpg 580w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/trama-174x98.jpg 174w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/trama.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The event also served as a training, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2c4xidv\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cseven stages to sustainability\u201d<\/a> presented by dedicated and well-trained volunteer facilitators with a focus on co-creation, a way of directing practical actions that optimizes\u00a0the resources and shared knowledge of\u00a0participants. Each group trained\u00a0and heard <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bw3mWO\" target=\"_blank\">presentations by people<\/a>\u2013\u201cvoices\u201d in the The Global Summit nomenclature\u2013who have already developed initiatives in each area.<\/p>\n<p>The Thriving\u00a0Cities group, for example, came to a unanimous conclusion of its goal to encourage collaborative citizen-based <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1lYNH5n\" target=\"_blank\">participation<\/a> in the city, a movement that considers the majority, stimulating people to interact with the city and to reframe urban space. The group was comprised of\u00a0citizens who represent a wide\u00a0variety of socio-environmental initiatives in Rio and beyond, including City of God\u2019s community newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1qLKitz\" target=\"_blank\">CDD Acontece<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2chvlO3\" target=\"_blank\">Gaia Jovem<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2coBpBH\" target=\"_blank\">Morada da Floresta<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bSZC0c\" target=\"_blank\">Projeto Ruas<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2c8c6ld\" target=\"_blank\">Conectando Territ\u00f3rios<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n<p>On the group\u2019s first day leaders were heard, such as Ot\u00e1vio Barros, the community leader of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1lXTQyl\" target=\"_blank\">Vale Encantado<\/a> which <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1JK7H2c\" target=\"_blank\">develops sustainable projects<\/a>, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1jlOi0c\" target=\"_blank\">techniques for sewage treatment<\/a> by way of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pcjFG0\" target=\"_blank\">biodigestors<\/a>, and solar panels, working\u00a0with residents both inside and outside the community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/7-passos-para-a-sustentabilidade.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32645 size-large\" title=\"Training in the seven stages of sustainability\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/7-passos-para-a-sustentabilidade-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"Training in the seven stages of sustainability\" width=\"620\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/7-passos-para-a-sustentabilidade-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/7-passos-para-a-sustentabilidade-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/7-passos-para-a-sustentabilidade-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/7-passos-para-a-sustentabilidade-580x326.jpg 580w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/7-passos-para-a-sustentabilidade-174x98.jpg 174w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/7-passos-para-a-sustentabilidade.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the second day, Adilson Almeida, president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29Rg1Xk\" target=\"_blank\">Quilombo Camorim Cultural Association<\/a>\u00a0located\u00a0in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cl0QqF\" target=\"_blank\">Pedra Branca State Park<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest urban forest, spoke about the challenges the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1lEor4M\" target=\"_blank\">Camorim<\/a> community faces to keep its <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29ewVKy\" target=\"_blank\">traditions and culture alive<\/a>. The residents restore\u00a0areas degraded by the military and have a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29VSyEE\" target=\"_blank\">nature guides project<\/a> which trains monitors to work with tourism. They also\u00a0develop artisanal products from recycled material and recycle cooking oil.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1s1ZLFk\" target=\"_blank\">quilombo<\/a> is one of the oldest in Brazil and was recognized in 2014 by the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1lvai9x\" target=\"_blank\">Palmares Foundation<\/a>. The quilombo\u00a0territory was invaded by a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29FHgzT\" target=\"_blank\">construction company that built the Media Village<\/a> for the Olympics, deforesting\u00a0an area of Atlantic Forest\u00a0the size of\u00a0five soccer fields. The favela faces <a href=\"http:\/\/theatln.tc\/235SOC5\" target=\"_blank\">urgent infrastructure problems such as the sanitation system<\/a>, where many houses aren\u2019t connected to a water system. This problem affects the health of the community, since the water isn\u2019t treated.
