From August\u00a023 to 30, Rio de Janeiro hosted\u00a0the 5th\u00a0The Global Summit<\/a>\u00a0at the Earth Sciences Museum in Urca. The event\u00a0sought<\/a> to give voice to the large, diverse\u00a0people and organizations in attendance\u2013around 150\u2013that work toward a more sustainable world<\/a>. Its fifth edition, taking place just after the Olympics<\/a>, called attention to the creation of a new paradigm for\u00a0climate economics, thriving\u00a0cities, education for all, and whole\u00a0health\u2013the four themes of the event\u2013based on social impact and collaborative social actions.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

The event also served as a training, with the \u201cseven stages to sustainability\u201d<\/a> presented by dedicated and well-trained volunteer facilitators with a focus on co-creation, a way of directing practical actions that optimizes\u00a0the resources and shared knowledge of\u00a0participants. The objective in this case is to transform\u00a0territories into sustainable places of varying scope, including recognizing that each person is an agent of change and that when we work together, big change\u00a0is possible.<\/p>\n

\"Emilia<\/a><\/p>\n

On the mornings of August 24 to 26 there were debate plenary\u00a0sessions including\u00a0Olympic Exhale: Housing, Social Justice & Local Futures\u00a0with\u00a0Sandra Maria from\u00a0Vila Aut\u00f3dromo<\/a>, Em\u00edlia Souza from Horto<\/a>, Theresa Williamson from Catalytic Communities<\/a> and Tain\u00e1 Cardoso from TETO<\/a>; Media Transparency and Other Ideas for Democracy in the 21st Century\u00a0with David Miranda<\/a>; and Building Peace: Harnessing Conflict as an Opportunity for Transformation\u00a0with Dominic Barter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"David<\/a><\/p>\n

During the afternoons, four large groups would\u00a0organize around the themes: Thriving\u00a0Cities, Whole\u00a0Health, Education for All and Climate Economics. Each group trained\u00a0and heard presentations by people<\/a>\u2013\u201cvoices\u201d in the The Global Summit nomenclature\u2013who have already developed initiatives in each area.<\/p>\n

The Thriving\u00a0Cities group, for example, came to a unanimous conclusion of its goal to encourage collaborative citizen-based participation<\/a> in the city, a movement that considers the majority, stimulating people to interact with the city and to reframe urban space. The group was comprised of\u00a0citizens who represent a wide\u00a0variety of socio-environmental initiatives in Rio and beyond, including City of God\u2019s community newspaper CDD Acontece<\/a>, Gaia Jovem<\/a>, Morada da Floresta<\/a>, Projeto Ruas<\/a>, and Conectando Territ\u00f3rios<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n

On the group\u2019s first day leaders were heard, such as Ot\u00e1vio Barros, the community leader of Vale Encantado<\/a> which develops sustainable projects<\/a>, such as techniques for sewage treatment<\/a> by way of biodigestors<\/a>, and solar panels, working\u00a0with residents both inside and outside the community.<\/p>\n

\"Training<\/a><\/p>\n

On the second day, Adilson Almeida, president of the Quilombo Camorim Cultural Association<\/a>\u00a0located\u00a0in the Pedra Branca State Park<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest urban forest, spoke about the challenges the Camorim<\/a> community faces to keep its traditions and culture alive<\/a>. The residents restore\u00a0areas degraded by the military and have a nature guides project<\/a> which trains monitors to work with tourism. They also\u00a0develop artisanal products from recycled material and recycle cooking oil.<\/p>\n

This quilombo<\/a> is one of the oldest in Brazil and was recognized in 2014 by the Palmares Foundation<\/a>. The quilombo\u00a0territory was invaded by a construction company that built the Media Village<\/a> for the Olympics, deforesting\u00a0an area of Atlantic Forest\u00a0the size of\u00a0five soccer fields. In this space a cultural reference center for the community would be built.<\/p>\n

\"Irenaldo<\/a><\/p>\n

Irenaldo Hon\u00f3rio da Silva, president of the Pica-Pau<\/a> Residents Association, located in Cordovil<\/a> in the North Zone<\/a> of Rio, presented the big challenges his\u00a0community faces due to receiving minimal government assistance<\/a>. The favela faces urgent infrastructure problems such as the sanitation system<\/a>, where many houses aren\u2019t connected to a water system. This problem affects the health of the community, since the water isn\u2019t treated. Irenaldo spoke about the urgent situation of the community\u2019s kids and youth, some of whom have been abandoned and aren\u2019t in school.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

From Irenaldo\u2019s story, it was suggested that collaboative action should be taken in Pica-Pau as a way of creating a methodology that can serve for other communities in the future. A process of co-created social action will be performed the Thriving\u00a0Cities group together with Pica-Pau residents.<\/p>\n

On the weekend of August\u00a027 and 28 a hackathon was held at Rio Criativo<\/a>, where the four groups got together to detail plans for their collaborative actions and in so doing\u00a0created the\u00a0The Global Summit Brasil Community<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Finally, the event ended on August\u00a030 at the Earth Sciences Museum with a presentation of projects developed by each group, including that of Thriving Cities, whose first action together with the Pica-Pau community has been\u00a0set for December 3 with the goal of documenting community needs, providing co-creation training and supporting community engagement.<\/p>\n
