Here they are presented in order of most to least popular according to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/glo.bo\/2dn4rBn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent poll data published by DataFolha<\/a>:<\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Marcelo Crivella, PRB<\/strong> (Brazilian Republican Party)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Crivella.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-33083\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Crivella.jpg\" alt=\"Crivella\" width=\"100\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Crivella.jpg 440w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Crivella-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ctbL0W\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crivella<\/a> represented Rio state as a federal Senator between 2003 and 2010 and is an evangelical bishop. He speaks in support of a range of social programs and housing. He has been criticized for his relationship to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, which has been accused of illegal <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ciUlCM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electioneering<\/a> on his behalf, while Crivella himself has been investigated for sending money to tax havens through the Church. <a href=\"http:\/\/glo.bo\/2dn4rBn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to DataFolha<\/a>, Crivella is leading the race with 31% of the vote.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Marcelo Freixo, PSOL<\/strong> (Socialism and Freedom Party)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Freixo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33082 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Freixo-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"Freixo\" width=\"100\" height=\"77\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Freixo-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Freixo-70x53.jpg 70w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Freixo.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2d600NA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Freixo<\/a> began his career as a school teacher and human rights defender before being elected State Deputy in 2006.\u00a0Now in his third term as State Deputy, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dprNch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Freixo<\/a> is\u00a0current president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dn9Qbw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights and Citizenship Commission<\/a> in the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dpr1w2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alerj<\/a>). During his last election in 2014 Freixo was elected with the\u00a0most\u00a0votes of any State Deputy in Brazil. He is best known\u00a0for leading the successful 2008 Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into Rio\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1vuXxO8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">militias<\/a>, and as a result inspired the hero human rights defender in Brazil&#8217;s biggest ever box office hit Elite Squad 2. With a mass campaign <a href=\"http:\/\/glo.bo\/2cKDVUF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded by small donations<\/a>, popular with Rio\u2019s youth and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/glo.bo\/2d57gd8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cultural figures such as Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso<\/a>, and highly <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dprKxo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">critical of Olympic investments in the city<\/a>, he won 28% of the mayoral vote in 2012 and came second to Paes. Freixo\u00a0has signed onto the civil society platform <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aiNU2s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Rio2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Jandira Feghali, PCdoB<\/strong> (Communist Party of Brazil)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Feghali.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-33081\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Feghali-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"Feghali\" width=\"100\" height=\"63\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Feghali-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Feghali.jpg 483w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dgkB3z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feghali<\/a> is trained as a doctor and has been involved in politics since joining what at the time of the military regime was a\u00a0clandestine\u00a0Communist Party in 1981. She\u2019s most notable for pushing for women\u2019s rights over the decades, and has been <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cBYqm1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">instrumental in creating legal mechanisms to protect women against domestic violence<\/a>. She finished in fourth place in Rio\u2019s 2008 mayoral elections, where she gained 9% of the vote and went on to serve as the city\u2019s Culture Secretary.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Pedro Paulo Carvalho Teixeira, PMDB<\/strong> (Brazilian Democratic Movement Party)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Teixeira.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33080 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Teixeira.jpg\" alt=\"Teixeira\" width=\"100\" height=\"68\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Teixeira.jpg 400w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Teixeira-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1QgcahC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teixeira<\/a> is known as current <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1nZkXpa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayor Eduardo Paes<\/a>\u2019 hand-picked\u00a0successor, recently serving as Rio\u2019s executive secretary for Government Coordination with the <a href=\"http:\/\/for.tn\/1XFAFYp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PMDB party<\/a>, but previously as State Deputy and twice as Federal Deputy for the state of Rio. He is most closely associated with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1EJxTst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barra da Tijuca<\/a> area of Rio and\u00a0is <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cDKVPt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most famous for assaulting his wife<\/a>, which he admitted to the public after she reported him to the police in both 2008 and 2010, yet today denies.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro, PSC<\/strong> (Social Christian Party)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Bolsonaro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-33079\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Bolsonaro-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"Bolsonaro\" width=\"100\" height=\"49\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Bolsonaro-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Bolsonaro.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dglfOv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bolsonaro<\/a> is son of ultra-conservative federal deputy <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2d636Q7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jair Bolsonaro<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0has served as Rio State Deputy since 2003. He and his father are associated with\u00a0homophobic comments and support for the military dictatorship, including <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2d636Q7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paying homage<\/a> to the torturer of impeached president Dilma Rousseff during her impeachment proceedings. Bolsonaro has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cBaUsh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeared in photographs with police accused of pedophilia<\/a>. His campaign slogan is: \u201cRio needs force to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u00cdndio da Costa, PSD<\/strong> (Social Democratic Party)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Costa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33089 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Costa-244x300.jpg\" alt=\"Costa\" width=\"100\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Costa-244x300.jpg 244w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Costa.jpg 435w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cte588\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Da Costa<\/a>,\u00a0a lawyer, has been a political figure in Rio de Janeiro since the early 1990s. He served in\u00a0Rio&#8217;s City Council\u00a0three times and most recently as Rio city\u2019s administrative secretary. When Jos\u00e9 Serra (PSDB) ran for president of Brazil in 2010, he selected da Costa as his vice.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Carlos Os\u00f3rio, PSDB<\/strong> (Brazilian Social Democracy Party)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Osorio.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33077 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Osorio-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"Os\u00f3rio\" width=\"100\" height=\"71\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Osorio-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Osorio.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2d3Cxc7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">O<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2d3Cxc7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">s\u00f3rio<\/a>, a businessman, was current Mayor Eduardo Paes\u2019 transport <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dajxOe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secretary<\/a> from 2012 until 2014, when he was elected a\u00a0PMDB State Deputy for Rio de Janeiro. He left the PMDB in February 2016 to run for mayor of the city as a PSDB candidate. Os\u00f3rio has signed onto the civil society platform <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aiNU2s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Rio2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Alessandro Molon, REDE<\/strong> (Sustainability Network)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Molon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33076 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Molon.jpg\" alt=\"Molon\" width=\"100\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Molon.jpg 500w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Molon-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2d65Lch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Molon<\/a>, a broadcaster and teacher,\u00a0began his political career\u00a0serving as Rio State Deputy with the Worker&#8217;s Party (PT) in 2002, where he continued for a second term and as leader of Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dn9Qbw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights and Citizenship Commission<\/a>. In 2010 he was elected\u00a0Federal Deputy where he authored the famed Marco Civil <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1nd5aIL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazilian Civil Rights Framework for the Internet<\/a> initiative, which protects <a href=\"http:\/\/bzfd.it\/2d3FiKt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">net neutrality, freedom and privacy<\/a> of web users. He <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cDGuEi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left the Workers Party<\/a>, the party of Dilma and Lula, in September 2015 because he felt it was too &#8220;difficult to make the necessary changes to the party.&#8221; Molon\u00a0has signed onto the civil society platform <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aiNU2s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Rio2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Cyro Garcia, PSTU<\/strong> (United Socialist Workers&#8217; Party)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cMVbYi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garcia<\/a>, an\u00a0ex-banker and socialist activist,\u00a0helped found the Worker&#8217;s Party (PT) and Unified Worker&#8217;s Central Union (CUT) in the 1980s. He has been a member of the PSTU since the party&#8217;s founding in 1994, and says he wants to \u201ctransform Rio for the workers\u201d and feels that the Workers\u2019 Party \u201chas done a great disservice to the Left.\u201d This is Garcia\u2019s fourth time running for Mayor, <a href=\"http:\/\/glo.bo\/2d30CRI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winning\u00a00.39% of the vote in 2012<\/a> (which translates to 12,596 votes in total).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Carmen Migueles, NOVO<\/strong> (New Party)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cqWV6j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Migueles<\/a> is a sociology professor at the Get\u00falio Vargas School of Public Administration. She has taught in public management development programs and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cOjYNJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says she&#8217;s running because<\/a> &#8220;there are a lot of competent people trying to do a good job, but without support to move forward.\u201d She \u201cbelieves it is important that ordinary citizens take a greater role in politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Thelma Bastos, PCO<\/strong> (Workers\u2019 Cause Party)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cBe1kf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bastos<\/a> is a teacher. According to Datafolha\u2019s polls, she is the least popular candidate and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cZORiJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has yet to attract voter support<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The first round of elections to decide\u00a0Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s next Mayor will take place on October 2 2016.
