The gathering took place at <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cTUz26\">Casa Coletiva<\/a>, a networking center for cultural movements, alternative media production, and social activism in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1TqHgX5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santa Teresa<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1p1GMFc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">central Rio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Vereadores-na-Casa-Coletiva.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32986 size-content\" title=\"Left to right: David Michael Miranda, Rom\u00e1rio Galv\u00e3o, Marielle Franco and C\u00e9lio Gari. The platform collaborates with candidates from various political parties who are committed to collective, democratic and grassroots processes. The hope is to encourage active <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1qEtBhr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">citizenship<\/a> and achieve an honest, socially and\u00a0ethically\u00a0committed assembly of council members that reflects the cultural diversity and plurality of Brazilian society. The central question of the debate at Saturday\u2019s event was, \u201chow can we make our city more democratic?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fvereadoresquequeremos%2Fvideos%2F550839058433580%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=620\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The 18\u00a0candidates who participated in Saturday\u2019s event came from all walks of life, discussing urgent issues such as labor\u00a0rights, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ddo2rI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violence against women<\/a>, homophobia and transphobia, educational\u00a0stipends and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2c3Hxjb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affirmative action<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2d2mUWa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">religious freedom<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1k3YzNi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">police brutality<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1ZkqpqX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freedom of the press<\/a>, and the lack of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1xKz1wb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racial<\/a> diversity in public office, among other issues.<\/p>\n<p>Various other organizations have been involved in the campaign and joined forces on Saturday to make the event possible. Casa Coletiva provided the venue, and united the efforts of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cvY8fV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rede Fora do Eixo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1PDqoZ2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u00eddia Ninja<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cvY3ZT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">P\u00f3s TV<\/a>. These groups\u00a0worked collectively to broadcast the event live on Facebook. Viewers who were unable to attend the event in person submitted questions to candidates via <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cvWDy9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Facebook page<\/a> in real time.<\/p>\n<p>Ana Pessoa, from M\u00eddia Ninja and resident of the Casa Coletiva, describes the emergence of the Vereadores Que Queremos campaign: \u201c[The project] was born of a laboratory that we did back in 2012 in S\u00e3o Paulo called The City We Want. This was a series of debates with candidates live streamed by P\u00f3s TV around the clock\u2026 The more you occupy politics, the more you are able to hack and dispute the system from within.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Claudete-da-Costa-Vereadores-Que-Queremos.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32967 size-content\" title=\"Claudete da Costa at Casa Coletiva. As a child living in Rio de Janeiro, Claudete da Costa experienced homelessness until her family finally settled in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wwjhWi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of God<\/a>\u00a0when she was 16 years of age. Claudete works for the National Movement for Collectors of Recyclable Materials. For the upcoming elections in October she is running with the party <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2d2nKC5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">REDE Sustentabilidade<\/a> (Sustainability Network), and is determined to strengthen voices of waste pickers, Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1IAfByp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">primary\u00a0collectors of recyclable materials<\/a>, known as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cwMnWJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>catadores<\/em><\/a>, in local government. Her platform is to ensure that existing public policy and laws safeguarding the rights of <em>catadores<\/em> are put in practice. On Saturday, Claudete affirmed: \u201cOne of my motivations for being involved in politics is the question of the black community\u2013we need to have a space of empowerment! I want to be part of a legacy of safeguarding <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1um7WLt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">human rights<\/a>, which requires the involvement of black people in politics!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Allan-Jorge-Vereadores-Que-Queremos.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32968 size-content\" title=\"Allan Jorge at Casa Coletiva. He is one of the founders of the first newspaper in Rocinha, and also co-founded <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dm9Jjt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R\u00e1dio Rocinha<\/a>. Currently, he works as a radio host for the Rocinha community station <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cJpUp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R\u00e1dio Brisa<\/a>. He is representing PCdoB (Communist Party of Brazil) in his campaign for City Council: \u201cWe have more than 300,000\u00a0residents in Rocinha. We want a local government that addresses the needs of favelas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marielle Franco is originally from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rNMXO3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo do Mar\u00e9<\/a>. She is with the PSOL (Socalism and Freedom Party) and her campaign focuses on the rights of favela residents and gender equality for black women. She studied sociology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC), and obtained her Masters in Public Administration at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), for which she wrote her dissertation entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cqQ69F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UPP: The Reduction of Favelas in Three Letters<\/a>.\u201d She has worked for various civil society organizations, including the Brazil Foundation and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1SdJOVx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEASM<\/a> (Mar\u00e9 Center for Solidarity Studies and Action). Currently, she is the coordinator of the Commission for the Defense of Human Rights and Citizenship in the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (Alerj).<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fvereadoresquequeremos%2Fvideos%2F552240254960127%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=620\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In 2002, C\u00e9lio Garis began working for <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1CnoTw3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comlurb<\/a> (Municipal Utility\u00a0for Urban Cleaning), and helped organize a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1d2VYlx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">workers\u2019 strike during carnival<\/a> in 2014 and 2015, in support of the rights of <em>garis<\/em> or street-sweepers. C\u00e9lio\u2019s campaign calls for the active participation of workers in local government. On Saturday C\u00e9lio explained \u201cthe <em>gari<\/em> is an agent of environmental health. We provide a healthy city. We want to be a part of the political process, to dispute institutions and address the crisis of representation.\u201d He is running with the REDE Sustentabilidade party.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fvereadoresquequeremos%2Fvideos%2F552613888256097%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=620\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>David Michael Miranda grew up in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ZoemOA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jacarezinho<\/a> favela and today works as an international\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2c0U61V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journalist<\/a>. He has been involved in several social causes, including the campaign Rio Without Homophobia. With the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1SaBIkN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juntos!<\/a>\u00a0collective he helped launch the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1T1qoV6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casa da Juventude<\/a> project dedicated to activism, free press and cultural production. Along with his partner Glenn Greenwald, David has been recognized worldwide for his activism in defense of Internet freedom: \u201cI don\u2019t want anyone to lose hope in the political process, especially in the current moment this country is facing. They sold the idea that politics is not to be discussed. Let\u2019s change this view. We have to establish a progressive front in the city,\u201d David concluded on Saturday.
