They made their instruments out of repurposed trash, metal and buckets because it made financial sense, but this knack for <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kJ5FYA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sustainable<\/a> practices grew into a samba band called <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2hAcNX2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poesia Samba Soul<\/a> and a sustainable community known as Favela da Paz.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspired by a visit he took in 2009 to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2h3df2Z\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cSchool and Research Center for a Realistic Utopia\u201d in Portugal, Miranda founded the Favela da Paz Institute, an umbrella organization which houses the samba band, Poesia Samba Soul, and their recording studio; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2hcBLwR\">Sustainable Periphery<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an environmental education project begun in 2010 which provides tours and classes on how to replicate their <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1k7iqdd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">community model<\/a>; and Project\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ggZIRm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegearte<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an educational initiative to promote healthy <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1whGE8j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food<\/a> and sustainable cooking using biogas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/poesia-samba-soul.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-34339 size-content\" title=\"Poesia Samba Soul, the samba band Claudio Miranda de Moura founded in 1989.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/poesia-samba-soul-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"Poesia Samba Soul, the samba band Claudio Miranda de Moura founded in 1989.\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/poesia-samba-soul-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/poesia-samba-soul-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claudio&#8217;s brother F\u00e1bio Miranda de Moura left his job in 2010 to dedicate himself full-time to developing Sustainable Periphery. On tours, he leads visitors through the Poesia Samba Soul studio. \u201cAfter we formed our band in 1989, we started giving classes until we reached the point where we had 300 students. They started their own bands, but up to that point they had no recording space and neither did we, so at that point we had the idea to build the studio, even though we had few\u00a0resources,\u201d F\u00e1bio remembers. To cut costs and reduce pollution, they built the studio using 80% repurposed materials, including a marble bar counter and old guitars and drums which have been turned into lamps. Pipes near the ceiling and floor which connect to the outside circulate air to keep the studio fresh without the need for costly and energy-consuming air conditioning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Visita Guiada Instituto Favela da Paz\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LyvjDesATHc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainable Periphery\u00a0uses the mottos #BeSustainable and #BeFunctional to spread the message that it is possible to live sustainably with few resources, using practical knowledge that doesn\u2019t require a fancy degree to develop <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2gs5hSh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">do-it-yourself projects<\/a>. They provide tours and workshops to school children and adults on the self-taught methods the organization\u00a0has used to \u201cgreen\u201d the seven homes in the Favela da Paz complex. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Projects to date include a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pcjFG0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biodigester<\/a> which contains an anaerobic bacteria to convert the organic waste the complex generates into methane gas. The biodigester also produces a fertilizer which a water pump directs into a hydroponic system made of PVC pipes where herbs and salad greens grow. A spiral <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2hcHCUM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar<\/a> water heater on the roof provides for showers, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2gOnW6y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rainwater<\/a> collects in tanks storing\u00a0800 liters, and most of their energy is solar. Project Vegeart led by resident Hellem Fernandes runs workshops on healthy and sustainable cooking for children in the kitchen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Maleta Solar.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RPNuMwja43k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help finance the project, Vegearte sometimes provides a catering service, and Poesia Samba Soul goes abroad on tour most years, having played in fifteen different countries. On trips overseas they have participated in knowledge exchanges with similar community initiatives, like Tamera in Portugal and the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2hcAC8k\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peace Community of San Jos\u00e9 de Apartad\u00f3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Colombia. They form part of Tamera\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Campus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiative, a solidarity network of 6 projects including partners in Mexico, Kenya and Israel-Palestine who participate in monthly calls and meet for retreats to exchange advice, support and updates on their projects\u2019 advancements towards peace in their communities. They are currently working on promoting their music locally and building a new educational center and residence they hope will be the first LEED certified self-sustaining building in Latin America near their current location. \u201cThe space will hold workshops, shows, theater, dance, music studios and the first vegetarian restaurant in the community. The entire building will run on biogas, there will be solar energy, and the green roof will provide space to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2hllDsR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plant produce<\/a> as well as write poetry. It will be the poetic corner of Jardim \u00c2ngela,\u201d Claudio\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2hcAXYG\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Olhar TVT. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost of the news that is shown in newspapers and on TV is about negative things that happen in the neighborhood. But that\u2019s not what it is like here. People who live here are proud. We have hands, we have heart and we have people with good intentions, and that is what is most important. Because the relationships you develop with people are stronger than politics. Politics only last four years. The relationships you make with people, with the community, last for life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Instituto Favela da Paz are holding their annual\u00a0#TAMOJUNTO <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2hby255\">party to close out the year<\/a>\u00a0today, Sunday December 11,\u00a0from 10am to 8pm.
