On February 22, at the Cine Odeon in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2m2Vkg3\" target=\"_blank\">Cinel\u00e2ndia<\/a>, in Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s downtown, the organization marked\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2mHgBse\" target=\"_blank\">report\u2019s release with a roundtable<\/a> discussion about <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1um7WLt\" target=\"_blank\">human rights<\/a>, justice, and violence in the Americas led by black women from a number of different countries. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2l4L6fp\" target=\"_blank\">Jurema Werneck<\/a>, the new executive director of Amnesty International Brazil, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2lMEj8U\" target=\"_blank\">Djamila Ribeiro<\/a>, who holds\u00a0her Master in Political Philosophy from UNIFESP, <a href=\"http:\/\/glo.bo\/2lMDvRm\" target=\"_blank\">Vilma Reis<\/a>, sociologist and public defender from the state of Bahia, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2lOl7Gf\" target=\"_blank\">Marion Gray-Hopkins<\/a>, whose son\u00a0was killed by police in the United States, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2mD4cFJ\" target=\"_blank\">Shackelia Jackson<\/a>, whose brother\u00a0was killed by police in Jamaica, led <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2mwmBEL\" target=\"_blank\">Tuesday&#8217;s conversation<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16865232_1592024664175582_3313463440397980795_n.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35120 size-content\" title=\"Photos by: Palloma Campello\/ Dunas Filmes\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16865232_1592024664175582_3313463440397980795_n-620x264.jpg\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16865232_1592024664175582_3313463440397980795_n-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16865232_1592024664175582_3313463440397980795_n-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2m2O5EG\" target=\"_blank\">Brazil chapter of the report<\/a>\u00a0highlights the continued high homicide rates and overall violence across the country. According to the report, \u201cyoung people and black men, mainly those living in favelas and other marginalized communities, were disproportionately targeted with violence by law enforcement officials. Human rights defenders, especially those defending land and environmental rights, faced increased threats and attacks. Violence against women and girls remained widespread. Human rights violations and discrimination against refugees, asylum-seekers\u00a0and migrants intensified.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2014, Amnesty International Brazil launched the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2lgvReo\" target=\"_blank\">Young, Black, Alive campaign<\/a> to call attention to the glaring number of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1N6gQp9\" target=\"_blank\">homicides among youth in poor black communities in Brazil<\/a>. However, since then, the number of young black men victimized by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?tag=police-brutality\" target=\"_blank\">police brutality<\/a>\u00a0remains high and has increased in several states. In Rio de Janeiro, for example, 811 people were killed by the police between January and November 2016. And while Rio de Janeiro hosted thousands of international tourists for the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pXMFVa\" target=\"_blank\">Olympic Games<\/a>, the number of civilians\u00a0killed by the police in the lead-up to the games increased by 103% compared to the same period in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/anistia-internacional-lanc3a7a-campanha-pela-preservac3a7c3a3o-da-vida-de-jovens-negros-no-brasil-4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35122\" title=\"Photos by: Palloma Campello\/ Dunas Filmes\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/anistia-internacional-lanc3a7a-campanha-pela-preservac3a7c3a3o-da-vida-de-jovens-negros-no-brasil-4.png\" width=\"620\" height=\"591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/anistia-internacional-lanc3a7a-campanha-pela-preservac3a7c3a3o-da-vida-de-jovens-negros-no-brasil-4.png 806w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/anistia-internacional-lanc3a7a-campanha-pela-preservac3a7c3a3o-da-vida-de-jovens-negros-no-brasil-4-300x286.png 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/anistia-internacional-lanc3a7a-campanha-pela-preservac3a7c3a3o-da-vida-de-jovens-negros-no-brasil-4-768x732.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazilian women and girls have suffered tremendously this past year as well. \u201cBetween January and November, there were 4,298 cases of rape reported in the state of Rio de Janeiro, 1,389 of\u00a0those in the capital.\u201d This despite\u00a0groundbreaking\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bbc.in\/2lYgds7\" target=\"_blank\">anti-domestic violence legislation<\/a>\u00a0having passed nationwide a decade ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Besides reviewing\u00a0the main points of the annual report, the speakers\u00a0also detailed\u00a0the role of black <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2lMEDo7\" target=\"_blank\">women<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2lgMFSK\" target=\"_blank\">human rights<\/a> movements. \u201cTo be a black woman in the context of human rights violations here in Brazil is to confront everyday, since the first moment, since the first breath, the necessity to resist the weight of force of this enemy called racism, this enemy called sexism, this enemy called poverty, exclusion, devaluation,\u201d explained Werneck. &#8220;To be a black woman in this country, living in a favela, means waking up everyday again and saying: \u2018I will move on.\u2019 To be a black woman in Brazil means having your son die, your son disappear, and yet, not giving up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16722505_1591154587595923_5888670033321711025_o-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-35124\" title=\"Photos by: Palloma Campello\/ Dunas Filmes\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16722505_1591154587595923_5888670033321711025_o-1.jpg\" width=\"620\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16722505_1591154587595923_5888670033321711025_o-1.jpg 866w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16722505_1591154587595923_5888670033321711025_o-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16722505_1591154587595923_5888670033321711025_o-1-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16722505_1591154587595923_5888670033321711025_o-1-174x131.jpg 174w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16722505_1591154587595923_5888670033321711025_o-1-70x53.jpg 70w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/16722505_1591154587595923_5888670033321711025_o-1-326x245.jpg 326w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the guest speakers came from unique backgrounds with a number of diverse experiences, they all agreed that black women everywhere can be the voice of change for human rights in marginalized communities.
