The app,\u00a0developed jointly by teachers Alex de Souza and Jorge da Costa Silva, does more than simply teach remotely: it customizes the school environment and its classrooms for computers, laptops, iPads and even smartphones, making up for the days\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2kHYB3q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">children are left without lessons because of shootings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still provisionally called the Portal Gin\u00e1sio Carioca Olimp\u00edadas 2016 (2016 Olympics Carioca School Site), the tool reproduces the school environment, making all the teaching material available, such as course packs, and replacing classes in all subjects, including electives, with simulators, online games, exercises, tests, virtual assessments, and attendance lists.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;App users feel like they are at school even when they are missing class. The tool really simulates the classroom environment for the student to feel like they are at school,&#8221; explains math teacher Jorge da Costa Silva, who worked as a system analyst for years\u00a0and joined\u00a0Rio&#8217;s Network of Municipal Schools\u00a0in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The program was developed especially for students who study in schools located in conflict areas. His inspiration was born from the information that 95% of the children enrolled in Mar\u00e9&#8217;s 45 schools have access to the Internet on a daily basis, alongside a deep sadness and melancholy during days when they are forbidden to study because schools are closed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During days of conflict, they talk to teachers all day long online,&#8221; says Alex de Souza, adding that the kids\u00a0are deeply irritated by police operations that <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2oqIxT4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">keep them from enjoying school<\/a>. &#8220;When the shootings begin, they complain that they are going to miss classes again, which does away with the myth that these kids choose truancy,&#8221; adds the project&#8217;s pedagogical coordinator.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/tablet.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-36339\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/tablet.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/tablet.png 913w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/tablet-472x620.png 472w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/tablet-479x629.png 479w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/tablet-768x1009.png 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/tablet-228x300.png 228w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/tablet-779x1024.png 779w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/a>The app was developed with the basic version of the free website editor Wix.com, which has a mobile version. Alex de Souza recalls that the tool started to be planned as soon as he moved from Baixa do Sapateiro to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1BTzYR8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nova Holanda<\/a>\u00a0as a way of neutralizing the effects of the confrontations that always bothered him: &#8220;From the window of CIEP Oper\u00e1rio Vicente Mariano (state school), I was observing Nova Holanda&#8217;s troubled goings-on, and I still remember what I thought, seeing helicopters flying over the community: &#8216;I came to Baixa do Sapateiro, but I never go to Nova Holanda.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I ended up crossing the border,&#8221; says the teacher, adding that sometimes it&#8217;s difficult to sleep after giving Life Project\u00a0classes, a subject included in the curriculum of some of the schools in the Network, which has 1,537 schools and almost 650,000 students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How does one guarantee a future project for a student who&#8217;s missing up to five days of class per month?&#8221;, he asks, before saying that student attendance at CIEP Oper\u00e1rio Vicente Mariano was 100%.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the project receives support incentives\u00a0from the directors of Gin\u00e1sio Carioca, Ana Fl\u00e1via and \u00c9rica Bittencourt, and those responsible for Education Management for the 4th Regional Coordination Body of Education (CREs), Andr\u00e9a Barros and Renata Costa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas For the original article in Portuguese published by Ag\u00eancia de Not\u00edcias das Favelas\u00a0click here.
