{"id":37097,"date":"2017-06-13T13:21:37","date_gmt":"2017-06-13T16:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=37097"},"modified":"2017-07-02T11:27:04","modified_gmt":"2017-07-02T14:27:04","slug":"community-garden-launched-in-cantagalo-on-world-environment-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=37097","title":{"rendered":"Community Garden Launched in Cantagalo on World Environment Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2rjCFLj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday, June 5, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2s2nW8A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Environment Day<\/a>, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2r6gZav\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a new community garden was launched in the Cantagalo favela<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0C\u00e1ssia Oliveira, executive coordinator of the NGO <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2s0oCyh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harmonicanto: M\u00fasica e Cidadania<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Harmony and Song: Music and Citizenship), is the creator of the garden project. Founded in 2006 at the Jo\u00e3o Goulart CIEP public school, located in the community within Ipanema in Rio\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pfz23A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Zone<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2rZT37J\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">organization offers<\/a> music and singing lessons, social studies, and tutoring for children from the community. With the installation of the garden, the project will offer weekly agriculture workshops for children, aiming to strengthen their feelings of belonging and responsibility toward public spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18835906_854439761386305_3689762759721040736_n.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37102 size-content\" title=\"Plant in the Street selecting material for community garden.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18835906_854439761386305_3689762759721040736_n-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18835906_854439761386305_3689762759721040736_n-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18835906_854439761386305_3689762759721040736_n-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pilot project for the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2qZ4aJP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community garden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was created in 2015 by C\u00e1ssia. At the time, she had the help of supporters such as Mono Telha from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2eeButb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plant in the Street<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, with the lack of an adequate irrigation system due to water shortages at the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2s29FZU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CIEP<\/a>, the garden began to wither. C\u00e1ssia noted, \u201cIn reality, we are simply attempting to rescue the beautiful garden previously created by Darcy Ribeiro when <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1sA3WBY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Governor Brizola<\/a>\u00a0launched the CIEP. Without Brizola, this first garden eventually faded away.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Cantagalo4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37122 size-content\" title=\"Seedlings introduced in community garden\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Cantagalo4-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Cantagalo4-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Cantagalo4-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past two years, a number of collaborators got together and reorganized their strategies, including Tomas Deleuse Mendo\u00e7a, a partner at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2eeAzsQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carpe Socio-Environmental Solutions<\/a> who became Environment Director of the association. He developed the new garden project with the hope of obtaining a sponsor; however, they did not manage to secure funding. He then drafted a lower budget, containing only the materials necessary for installing the garden. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18835898_854441251386156_8359124186348359032_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37124 size-content\" title=\"Harmonicanto children in the community garden\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18835898_854441251386156_8359124186348359032_n-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18835898_854441251386156_8359124186348359032_n-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18835898_854441251386156_8359124186348359032_n-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April of this year C\u00e1ssia was invited to present her NGO at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2r6c9tG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Re-Ver Ipanema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> event, a conversation circle about sustainable initiatives held at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2rFKApJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laura Alvim House of Culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, promoted by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2tpyRO6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instituto E<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She had the opportunity to meet the creative director of fashion company Osklen and founder of the institute, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2rQI9z2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oskar Mestavaht<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and spoke of her dream of installing the community garden. Oskar was immediately on board. Later, the director of Instituto E, Nina, confirmed they would finance the project and provided support for the communication and development of the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18839130_854435474720067_2312804590596507940_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37125 size-content\" title=\"Plant in the Street's collective action project in the community garden\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18839130_854435474720067_2312804590596507940_n-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18839130_854435474720067_2312804590596507940_n-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18839130_854435474720067_2312804590596507940_n-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The joint effort to install and launch the new garden included the removal of solid waste, preparation and fertilization of the soil, and planting of seedlings. This was undertaken by a number of volunteers and partners of Harmonicanto, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planta in the Street<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(group of agriculture and landscape initiatives organized by Mono Telha, maintainer of the garden) and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2smV76u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art of Living<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (partner since 2008 offering yoga classes and hosting musical presentations, including by a youth group). \u201cThe support of the organizer of Planta in the Street is extremely important to us. He has a lot of urban projects and is passionate about what he does. The garden connects to a veranda overlooking the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. This veranda was reformed last year by the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2s8f7hp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children\u2019s Institute<\/a>. They intend for this veranda to be a cultural touristic spot, where painters, sculptors, artisans, cooks, and artists in general from the community can explore and sell their products. \u201cMany of the dreams we have ahead of us arise our of sustainability. With the launch of the garden, another dream slips to the top of our wish list: making a bistro on the veranda to receive tourists and friends who appreciate the green of nature and want to watch a beautiful sunset while tasting delicious dishes made with ingredients from our garden.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18892878_854438881386393_8080378815696404031_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37129 size-content\" title=\"Harmonicanto youth in the community garden\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18892878_854438881386393_8080378815696404031_n-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18892878_854438881386393_8080378815696404031_n-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18892878_854438881386393_8080378815696404031_n-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The structure of the garden contains 32 plant beds adjacent to the external access to the public school for Harmonicanto: in the first rows, sunflowers and other flowers were planted to greet visitors, and the remaining 25 rows contain vegetables, spices, and more. \u201cWe have Mono Telha with the support of Plant in the Street for six months, thanks to the generosity of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2rFvOPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green People<\/a>, who will take care of the garden, hold environmental classes, and teach volunteers about gardening. These volunteers, in turn, will have the role of multipliers&#8230; It\u2019s awareness-raising work, a collective collaboration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18765752_10155945906071002_2540052656698411316_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-37131 size-content\" title=\"C\u00e1ssia de Oliveira, Harmonicanto's founder, presents the musical group\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18765752_10155945906071002_2540052656698411316_n-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18765752_10155945906071002_2540052656698411316_n-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/18765752_10155945906071002_2540052656698411316_n-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event concluded with participants discussing and raising awareness about the importance of appropriate waste disposal, maintenance, and care of urban and natural spaces. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2sYnj01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zero Waste Movement<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2s84T0q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Favela + Limpa<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(Cleaner Favela) also presented <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2uaAs7v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">zero waste projects<\/a> throughout the event, helping with planting, environmental education, and childcare and coordination. Art of Living held a ceremony for World Environment Day, celebrating the completion of the community garden through a meditation with children from the community.
