Last Saturday, September 16, a\u00a0Session of Short Films \u201cFor the English to See\u201d<\/a> took place in Vila do Pinheiro<\/a>, in Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a> in the North Zone<\/a>. During the event\u2014named after a commonly used expression which represents masquerading progress for the sake of appearances<\/a>\u2014two films produced by the “Na Favela” collective were shown, as well as five short films produced by students at the CriaAtivo Film School.<\/p>\n

\u201cNa Favela\u201d<\/a>\u2014which stands for Favela Audiovisual Nucleus\u2014is a favela-based audiovisual collective from Complexo da Mar\u00e9 that utilizes the production and exhibition of films as a tool for social transformation. The CriaAtivo Film School<\/a> is a project focused on introductory qualifications for the cinematographic market, aiming to qualify youth from diverse parts of the city. It works in partnership with the Creative Wick project in London<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The half-length film\u00a0Mar\u00e9 Fishermen\u00a0<\/em>(Pescadores da Mar\u00e9)\u00a0by Josinaldo Medeiros and the short film Olympic City<\/em>\u00a0(Cidade Ol\u00edmpica) by Wagner Novais were produced by Na Favela. The short films Peace Will Still Come in this Life<\/em>\u00a0(A Paz Ainda Vir\u00e1 Nessa Vida) by Isabella Geoffroy, Chained <\/em>(Acorrentados)\u00a0by Carlos Gabriel Zorante and Marcelli Pires Faria, Beyond Skin\u00a0<\/em>(Al\u00e9m de Pele)\u00a0by Amanda Veiratto and Dayane Pinto, Mother Ship\u00a0<\/em>(Nave M\u00e3e) by Eloi Leones and Iury de Carvalho Lobo, and Pvblo<\/em> by Zandora Eduardo were all fruits of the course at the CriaAtivo Film School.<\/p>\n

One of the attendees, who did justice to the name of the session, was William Chamberlain, the British founder and director of the Creative Wick Hackney Wick & Fish Island CIC. Will\u2014as he prefers to be called\u2014in his first visit to Latin America, to Brazil, and to a favela in Rio, was enchanted by the students’ productions: \u201cI feel very happy. The films are marvelous and I am impressed with the quality. They exceeded my expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Will watched all of the evening’s films and praised those produced by Na Favela: the half-length film Mar\u00e9 Fishermen<\/em>\u00a0and the film Olympic City<\/em>, which takes place during the selection process for a job at the Olympic Games<\/a> and which raises questions regarding freedom of expression. \u201cThe film is very relevant because on the eve of the Olympics, just like Brazil, London<\/a> also suffered an increase in the repression of street art,\u201d Will explains.<\/p>\n

Amanda Flor, a student in the second term of CriaAtivo Film School’s scriptwriting course at the Knowledge Ship<\/a> in\u00a0Triagem<\/a>, also approved of the event: \u201cI was happy to see these productions from the previous term. With all of this quality, I must develop a screenplay on par,\u201d concludes the student, who is participating in an exchange program in London.<\/p>\n

Iury Lobo, a resident of Mar\u00e9 and one of the directors of the short film Mother Ship<\/em> about\u00a0the LGBT<\/a> world, defended the importance of cinema clubs in the favela. \u201cThis is a very important action in our territory. I’m from here and I see Mar\u00e9 as a place of great artistic and cultural potential. To be here is to show that we keep resisting<\/a>, despite the violence and all of the other problems. To have a film about LGBT themes, for me\u2014being black, gay, and from a favela\u2014is very significant,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n
