{"id":40794,"date":"2017-12-14T10:34:47","date_gmt":"2017-12-14T13:34:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=40794"},"modified":"2017-12-16T11:15:12","modified_gmt":"2017-12-16T14:15:12","slug":"mothers-of-kids-killed-by-police-speak-out-at-launch-of-no-tanks-campaign-against-police-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=40794","title":{"rendered":"Mothers of Kids Killed by Police Speak Out at Launch of &#8216;No Tanks!&#8217; Campaign Against Police Operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2jYk46V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Community activists and family members packed Rio de Janeiro\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dwpW2P\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Theater of the Oppressed<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2AgEVs9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the evening of Friday, December 8<\/a> as part of a community campaign against police operations in the city\u2019s favelas.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2BDkfPr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caveir\u00e3o N\u00e3o: Favelas Pela Vida e Contra as Opera\u00e7\u00f5es!<\/a>&#8221; (No Tanks: Favelas for Life and Against Police Operations!) launched with three days of events last week, led and organized by the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2qOqv0z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Network of Communities and Movements Against Violence<\/a>. Marches, press meetings, and film screenings called attention to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2vIIK89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">police violence<\/a>, highlighting its <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2z3fGc9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disproportionate impact on Rio\u2019s young black men<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2iUM5eH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety<\/a>, nearly 22,000 Brazilians lost their lives in police operations between 2009 and 2016. Of those killed, 99.3% were men, 81.8% were between the ages of 12 and 29, and 76.2% were black. 2016 alone saw 4,224 deaths attributed to conflict with civil and military police\u2014up 25.8% from 2015. At<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> Friday\u2019s event<\/span>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rNMXO3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a> community journalist and<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> Network Against Violence representative<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=38448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gizele Martins<\/a> reminded the audience that \u201cthe fight for black lives cannot be a secondary fight&#8230; It must be central to any political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Caveirao-Nao-mothers-and-allie.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40826 size-content\" title=\"Caveir\u00e3o N\u00e3o: mothers and allies\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Caveirao-Nao-mothers-and-allie-e1513119364845-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Caveirao-Nao-mothers-and-allie-e1513119364845-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Caveirao-Nao-mothers-and-allie-e1513119364845-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Community-level data on police operations are harder to come by, but the Caveir\u00e3o N\u00e3o! campaign hopes to change that. Campaign organizers are currently assembling a dossier documenting the number of police operations in favelas, their local impacts, and public funds spent on such operations. Martins reported that the campaign has begun meeting monthly with community members and international partners alike. \u201cWe want this campaign to reach the whole world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29tM7HQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mothers of the victims of police violence<\/a> also spoke that evening, demanding justice for their sons\u2019 killers and support for favela residents. Network Against Violence representatives Ana Lucia de Oliveira and Maria Dalva Correa, both mothers to sons killed by police, led the evening\u2019s opening discussion. Oliveira&#8217;s son Michel Antonio de Oliveira da Silva was <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2C4sUav\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tortured and killed<\/a> by militia\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/Zywk0I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">groups comprised of armed off-duty cops<\/a> that assert control over certain territories\u2014in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa3h9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Zone<\/a> neighborhood of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ds7vwD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ramos<\/a> in 2008. Correa lost her son in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1QJlokN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2003 Borel Massacre<\/a> when four young men were killed in a police operation in Rio\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1MwIQ3z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tijuca<\/a> neighborhood. Seven years ago, &#8220;Luto Como M\u00e3e&#8221; showcased the courageous protests of mothers of the victims of the <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2jy29af\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acari<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2BC7dl7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Via Show<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2AafrMT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baixada Fluminense massacres<\/a> of 1990, 2003, and 2005, respectively. Now, &#8220;Nossos Mortos T\u00eam Voz&#8221; directors Fernando Sousa and Gabriel Barbosa hope to contribute to the continuing struggle against police impunity. Produced by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2kq9NzQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quiproc\u00f3 Films<\/a> in partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2vsUzij\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grita Baixada Forum<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2o9Uc8b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Human Rights at the Diocese of Nova Igua\u00e7u<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2jPePWM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Misereor<\/a>, their documentary returns to Greater Rio&#8217;s Baixada Fluminense region to follow the struggle of six women as they seek justice for their sons and brothers.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Nossos Mortos T\u00eam Voz | Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nsVFbAtgl1M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One of the film\u2019s protagonists, Joanna D\u2019Arc Mendes, was present Friday evening. D\u2019Arc Mendes lost her youngest son, Fl\u00e1vio Mendes Pontes, in March 2004. Thirteen years later, she recounts the story like it was yesterday: \u201cThree police invaded my house saying they had received an anonymous report that we were hiding drugs. They searched everywhere and found nothing&#8230; They ripped my son from my arms and shot him out in the street.\u201d Of the three police involved, one had his charges thrown out, while the other two\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2z2dSCK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would go on to participate in 2005&#8217;s Baixada massacre<\/a>\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2knMeYj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bloodiest in the history<\/a> of Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n<p>Mendes, Oliveira, Correa, and all the other women who continue to march for their fallen loved ones are fearless. All of them\u2014despite <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2htZqfz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">psychological trauma, declining health<\/a>, even death threats\u2014continue to pursue justice in the face of rampant impunity. With the support of filmmakers, community organizations, and international partners, they may yet find solace. One thing is clear, though. They will not be stopped. \u201cWe must fight,\u201d said Oliveira. \u201cWe can not give up.
