The operations left <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2FTb3V6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least two dead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>13-year-old Jeremias Mor\u00e3es da Silva was shot on his way back from a soccer game in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1BTzYR8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nova Holanda<\/a> favela. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Souza Aguiar Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time the kids go back to school, this happens,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2BdTQXd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">da Silva\u2019s mother told <em>TV Globo<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s back to school, and the police operations start. It\u2019s like they do it on purpose. My 13-year-old son, servant of God, a golden child, he was learning to play guitar. I had five children, now I have four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Jeremias-killed-by-police-in-mare.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-41718 size-content\" title=\"Jeremias killed by police in Mar\u00e9 operations (photo distributed on social media)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Jeremias-killed-by-police-in-mare-620x264.jpeg\" alt=\"Jeremias killed by police in Mar\u00e9 operations (photo distributed on social media)\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Jeremias-killed-by-police-in-mare-620x264.jpeg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Jeremias-killed-by-police-in-mare-940x400.jpeg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rio\u2019s Special Operations Unit (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1sAbGoa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BOPE<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1RAVVtI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shock Troops<\/a>, and canine units all deployed to Mar\u00e9 around 6am, purportedly in revenge response to a false report of a police kidnapping. The day\u2019s operations\u2014undertaken the week children return to school from summer break\u2014resulted in the closure of 20 schools, 13 daycare centers, and 7 child development centers, <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2BdTQXd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to <em>Globo<\/em><\/a>. Operations lasted until just after 7pm.<\/p>\n<p>Civil society organizations, activists, and community journalists across Rio immediately took to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1ooH4TZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> to denounce the day\u2019s attacks, and the way the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1tKsXCf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mainstream media<\/a>\u00a0initially covered them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/MV-Post.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-41675 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/MV-Post.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"353\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/MV-Post.png 353w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/MV-Post-227x300.png 227w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" \/><\/a>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2BepALP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post relatively early in the day<\/a>, the community activist and media collective\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2neY4Fs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mar\u00e9 Vive<\/a> pointed to the\u00a0lack of coverage thus far\u00a0and the disparity between treatment of Mar\u00e9 and the city\u2019s middle class neighborhoods: \u201cWe&#8217;re already headed for 10 hours of police operations here in Mar\u00e9. The bullets won&#8217;t stop, and shootouts with high caliber rounds are taking place practically all over Mar\u00e9. We are corralled in by this killer state\u2014which maintains it lacks money for basic public services, yet <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2sfhMmH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pours money into a war on the poor<\/a>. Three people shot already. One runs a serious risk of dying. [Later edit: two people died in the police operation.] No public commotion, no stories in the online or print newspapers. No live coverage for those who suffer this absurdity. While the privileged bourgeoisie get ready for <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1vKOjuK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carnival<\/a>, we\u2019re here, invisible, struggling to stay alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When journalist Michel Silva from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xZwssv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rocinha<\/a>\u00a0pointed <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2seLgoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to the multiple deaths associated with the operation<\/a>, one commenter asked: \u201cIs it in the media? Is it going to come out? I want to see all of this in the papers, just <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2lmxucJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like when a tourist gets killed<\/a> or shot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Caveirao-Nao-Post.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-41677\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Caveirao-Nao-Post.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Caveirao-Nao-Post.png 499w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Caveirao-Nao-Post-300x177.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 354px) 100vw, 354px\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Bo39Ez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No Tanks\u2014Favelas for Life and Against Police Operations<\/a> campaign <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2GVr2TY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detailed the wider effects<\/a> of this sort of police incursion, writing: \u201cToday, the first day of class, hundreds of kids in Mar\u00e9 that would have been headed to school had their routines interrupted. Health posts are closed too. Hundreds of others weren\u2019t able to attend medical appointments. In this moment of high unemployment, we\u2019ve received multiple accounts of people stating they had job interviews or that they were just about to leave home for work\u2014but none were able to leave home, since the police operations are still ongoing. The police continue terrorizing, killing, invading, controlling our bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/mare.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-41679 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/mare-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/mare-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/mare.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>Others called attention to the disproportionate focus on highway closures across the initial headlines and reports of mainstream publications such as <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2EM6JaV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Globo<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2FTb3V6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>R7<\/em><\/a>, and the apparent concern for traffic over human life, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2EqU4ME\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">even on international news<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2fP7OmR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coletivo Papo Reto\u2019s<\/a> Thain\u00e3 de Medeiros <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2GWJ6x4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote sarcastically<\/a>: \u201cThe city is lucky traffic jams are the only thing that\u2019s happened so far!\u201d He and several other activists shared the image on the right, which reads: &#8220;F**k the Red and Yellow Highways being closed. What about the children that were killed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A three-year-old girl <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2BZNGqp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had also been killed<\/a> in a robbery attempt earlier in the day in the North Zone neighborhood of Anchieta.
