Meeting in a church next to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2j1KWmB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deactivated cable car station<\/a>, the participants used photos by professional photographers and historical records as a starting point for conversations about <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1HV2Xob\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memory<\/a> in Provid\u00eancia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/FavelasEmFotosProvide\u0302ncia-Geral-Foto_RenanOtto.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42162\" title=\"Reflecting on the photos on display, Mestre Ben\u00e9 spoke about Provid\u00eancia's history. Some images were old, reflecting the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dQQPCf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founding of the favela 120 years ago<\/a>, whereas others were more recent, reflecting public policies, racism, soccer games, forced evictions, and memorable characters from the favela.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/FavelasEmFotosProvide\u0302ncia-Alessandra-Foto_RenanOtto.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42163\" title=\"Provid\u00eancia resident Alessandra Lima spoke about the struggle against evictions. Henrique Zizo presented the work of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2oRss9P\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Expanded Photo Collective<\/a> (Coletivo Foto Expandida), which promotes photography workshops in Rio\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1iwThVm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Port Zone<\/a>. \u201cIt is a project about the process of creating the image,\u201d he said. He explained that at the start of workshops, many participants were not interested in the finished pictures, which were normally taken with a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2oULJY3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pinhole camera<\/a>. But after passing through all the steps of the creation process, which included developing photographs in a darkroom, the participants developed a greater appreciation for the photos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/FavelasEmFotosProvide\u0302ncia-Zizo-Foto_LuizBaltar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42167\" title=\"Zizo presents the work of Coletivo Fotografia Expandida. He spoke about the focus of his art of documentation and the difficulties in photographing the favela due to the presence of armed groups (both parallel and State). He also reflected upon the inaccessibility of photography for residents: \u201cThe community barely participates. Photography is very philosophical and intellectual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/FavelasEmFotosProvide\u0302ncia-Mauricio-Hora-Foto_Luis-Baltar-e1520277245838.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42168\" title=\"Maur\u00edcio Hora speaks about his documentation work in the favela. The photographer\u2019s collection was displayed in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2uA49BD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rio\u2019s Art Museum<\/a> (MAR), in the exhibition <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2I1vbq1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ti\u00e3o\u2019s Constellation<\/a>, and remains preserved in the museum. But Mendes made sure to emphasize: \u201cThe collection belongs here. It belongs to Provid\u00eancia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/FavelasEmFotosProvide\u0302ncia-Aline-Mendes-Foto_Luis-Baltar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42169\" title=\"Aline Mendes discusses the photographer Ti\u00e3o Pires. In Provid\u00eancia, the photographer F\u00e1bio Caff\u00e9 will lead a photography workshop for residents in April. Those who are interested can register by emailing favelaemfoto@gmail.com. Between April and May, the series of Favelas in Photo meetings will also take place in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1LhL5ep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vila Kennedy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1sksV07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manguinhos<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1hXNzRG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santa Marta<\/a>. The final event will occur in June and will unite all of the content discussed in each favela to generate a general reflection.
