Between April 24 and 28, 2018, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro<\/a>\u00a0(UFRJ) hosted\u00a0Abra\u00e7o das Favelas<\/a>\u00a0(Favela Embrace), a week of cultural<\/a> and artistic<\/a> events animated by panel discussions, debates, movie screenings, yoga, theater, dance, and karaoke, among other artistic performances.<\/p>\n

This project was coordinated by the collective Abra\u00e7o das Favelas<\/a>, which brings together residents from different favelas of Rio de Janeiro who want to (re)think the dialogue between favelas and universities. By bringing together groups of artists from favelas, the organizers made visible the range of\u00a0cultural and artistic activities that thrive in these neighborhoods and articulated new links between these communities and the academic world<\/a>. The strength of this project also comes from the fact that groups of artists and residents from different favelas (including\u00a0Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a>, <\/em>Manguinhos<\/a>, <\/em>Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0Provid\u00eancia<\/a>) came united to deliver their political message and their desire to discuss and be heard.<\/p>\n

Whose Voices?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Community communicators Naldinho from Mar\u00e9 Vive<\/a>\u00a0(Mar\u00e9), Rene Silva from Voz das Comunidades<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(founded in Alem\u00e3o, now in various favelas), and Carlos from O Cidad\u00e3o<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Mar\u00e9) talk about the importance of alternative and community media<\/a> in and from favelas and criticize the way traditional mainstream media approach favelas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Pacification?<\/span><\/p>\n

Students and teachers from the\u00a0Col\u00e9gio Pedro II<\/a>\u00a0(CPII) public school screen a film they produced in 2017,\u00a0Pacifica\u00e7\u00e3o? As UPPs e a viol\u00eancia no RJ<\/em><\/a> (Pacification? The Pacifying Police Units<\/a> and Violence in Rio de Janeiro), and then lead a debate on the movie. The participants discuss the impacts of the UPPs on favelas with\u00a0CPII teacher Jo\u00e3o Braga, Provid\u00eancia resident Cosme Felippsen (who participated in the film), and former CPII student\u00a0Mike Ribeiro.<\/p>\n

In honor of Marielle\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Matheus Fraz\u00e3o, a student of performance arts at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro<\/a> (UNIRIO) and a resident of Timbau<\/a>\u00a0(in Mar\u00e9), performs a dance<\/a> titled ‘Corpo Presente’ (Present Body). This powerful performance<\/a>\u00a0embodies the life and the murder of Marielle Franco<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dancing into elite spaces\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Manguinhos Ballet<\/a>, a troupe of young dancers from Complexo de Manguinhos\u00a0led by Daiana Ferreira dos Santos de Oliveira<\/a>, proudly represents the community and its\u00a0cultural and artistic\u00a0scene.<\/p>\n

Karaok\u00ea das Bixas Pretas, an artistic and political intervention created by Carlos Marra, Felipe Dutra, and Iury de Carvalho Lobo and which is particularly active in Mar\u00e9, leads a humorous performance consisting of participatory karaoke using only songs from black and\/or LGBT<\/a> artists.<\/p>\n
