{"id":44096,"date":"2018-06-06T08:00:13","date_gmt":"2018-06-06T11:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=44096"},"modified":"2018-06-08T11:37:56","modified_gmt":"2018-06-08T14:37:56","slug":"the-favela-is-sending-its-message-complexo-do-alemao-poetry-slam-celebrates-one-year-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=44096","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;The Favela Is Sending Its Message!&#8217; Alem\u00e3o Poetry Slam Celebrates Its First Anniversary [IMAGES]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2sGhTcu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rhymes echoed down <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rtohzT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>\u2019s Central Avenue on Sunday night, May 27 as dancers, poets, and rappers convened to celebrate the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2LYBqge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one year anniversary of Slam Laje<\/a>, Alem\u00e3o\u2019s first poetry slam.<\/p>\n<p>As poets from Rio and S\u00e3o Paulo spun rhymes on everything from racism and police brutality to feminism and education, judges picked from the crowd scored performances on a 1-10 scale, choosing three top poets as the evening\u2019s winners. This month\u2019s champions\u2014Dudu Neves, Sabrina Azevedo, and Chal Enigma of the group <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xCXSbK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N\u00f3s da Rua<\/a>\u2014will move on to the Slam Laje finals later this year. Between performances, MC Dall Farra of the favela poetry collective <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IKs0aa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poetas Favelados<\/a> stoked the crowd in call and response: \u201cThe favela is sending its message! Slam! Laje! Slam! Laje! Open your heart!\u201d The battle, organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2h0HbPb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alem\u00e3o\u2019s own MC Martina<\/a> and Al-Neg, also featured a passinho competition, a mini-show by MC Thai Flow, and a poetic intervention by S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Jf49vs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PARDOnizadas<\/a> group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Slam-Laje_4_photo-by-Antoine-Horenbeek.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44006 size-content\" title=\"Photo by Antoine Horenbeek\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Slam-Laje_4_photo-by-Antoine-Horenbeek-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Slam-Laje_4_photo-by-Antoine-Horenbeek-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Slam-Laje_4_photo-by-Antoine-Horenbeek-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since its founding in May of 2017, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Lkm6cF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Slam Laje<\/a> has held 10 monthly poetry slams, gathering poets and spectators from Alem\u00e3o and across Brazil with the goal of \u201cencouraging marginal poetry and literature in Complexo do Alem\u00e3o, strengthening the cultural movement, and occupying spaces around our favela with passinho and rhyme battles, with wit and resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slam Laje has typically held its events atop the rooftop (the <em>laje<\/em>) of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2klUh7A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casa Brota, the favela complex\u2019s first coworking space<\/a>. For its first anniversary, however, the group broke with this tradition, descending the hill and battling at the doorstep of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29srY1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instituto Raizes em Movimento, a community-based NGO<\/a> dedicated to human rights, community-led development and cultural memory in Complexo do Alem\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Slam-Laje_6_photo-by-Antoine-Horenbeek.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44008 size-content\" title=\"Photo by Antoine Horenbeek\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Slam-Laje_6_photo-by-Antoine-Horenbeek-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Slam-Laje_6_photo-by-Antoine-Horenbeek-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Slam-Laje_6_photo-by-Antoine-Horenbeek-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For MC Dall Farra, one of the event\u2019s most important strengths continues to be its location in the favela. \u201cThis was a really welcoming event&#8230; The majority of poets who do marginal poetry are from the favela or from the periphery, so I think that holding the event in a space that represents them makes a huge difference for people to feel more comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MC Martina <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2kkT69l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told favela media outlet <em>Voz das Comunidades<\/em><\/a> she felt the event &#8220;is a really good thing, because we do it with such love.
