The activities were spread across the city and included events in a number of favelas such as <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rIlhJj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cantagalo<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rNMXO3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mar\u00e9<\/a>, the latter of which held an exhibition featuring photographers from Mar\u00e9 and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1nEeBwu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alem\u00e3o<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JKJpQx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">workshops aimed at women<\/a> on themes ranging from self-care to composting. The activities scheduled to take place in Babil\u00f4nia in partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29g91Au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the project Revolusolar<\/a> did not happen due to clashes between police and drug traffickers in the region, culminating in the execution of seven traffickers whose bodies were thrown into the sea and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JGoev0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeared two days later on a beach in Urca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cineclube.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44547 size-content\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cineclube-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cineclube-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cineclube-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cineclube-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cineclube-580x326.jpg 580w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cineclube-174x98.jpg 174w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/cineclube.jpg 1032w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JPxJrT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favela Hub<\/a>, a social innovation space in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1lU6eQ0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho<\/a> and Cantagalo favela complex (PPG), hosted the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2lrfbUh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silvio Tendler<\/a> cinema club on June 9. The cinema club was named after a documentary director who tackles political themes such as privatization and dictatorship, and whose film,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2yAvszh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finger on the Wound<\/a>\u2014<\/em>portraying the life of regular citizens in the midst of an economic crisis that benefits the powerful\u2014is currently in theaters. The cinema club, launched in March of this year, aims to show independent films produced in diverse places as a way to expand the community&#8217;s cultural horizons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is to bring quality audiovisual material into the favela,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JN4pFF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josy Oliveira<\/a>, a resident of the community for 13 years and one of the cinema club organizers. There are two monthly sessions in different locations with one of the two aimed at children and youth who, as it happens, dominated this particular joint cinema club session. \u201cWe don\u2019t even need a physical space. Having a big screen, the equipment and having an audience, we can do it anywhere in the community, in any alley,&#8221; Oliveira added.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2sT8rhhbCUA\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The films screened included the shorts <em>Favela as a Sustainable Model<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ZsEul3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catalytic Communities<\/a> (CatComm, the NGO responsible for <em>RioOnWatch<\/em>) and <em>The Force of Marias<\/em> by local Cantagalo production company <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JN4Qjh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Curta Ra\u00edzes Produ\u00e7\u00f5es<\/a>, as well as clips from the feature film <em>In Front<\/em>\u00a0by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HNBPPm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Good Brasil<\/a>. Produced in 2012 for <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Mv1QpU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rio+20<\/a>, the UN sustainability event that happened in Rio twenty years after the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2K3zEZK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1992 Earth Summit<\/a>, the short film <em>Favela as a Sustainable Model<\/em>, explores the ways in which sustainable principles form the very fabric of life in favelas, as well as the challenges favelas face due to government neglect. The film features environmental problems due to government neglect, such as the floods, garbage, and sewage issues in the favela <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1LJW9v7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pica-Pau<\/a>, alongside solution-focused initiatives such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1yKDS19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">socio-environmental NGO Verdejar from Alem\u00e3o<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/1Iq9tsK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favela Org\u00e2nica<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1CSCYi2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Babil\u00f4nia<\/a>. The latter uses parts of food that are typically discarded to create elaborate dishes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/rose.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44546 size-content\" title=\"Discussion following the film screenings\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/rose-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/rose-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/rose-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roseli Franco, CatComm&#8217;s Institutional Director and producer of the film, explained how the film led to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/SFNReport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Favela Network<\/a> project, which has already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bit.ly\/RFSMapa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mapped more than 100<\/a> socio-environmental sustainability and resilience initiatives in favelas across the metropolitan region. The project is currently working to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/SustainableFavelas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raise the visibility of these initiatives<\/a> through media coverage, and will organize exchanges, trainings, partnerships, and the formation of a knowledge-sharing network as a way to strengthen this model of development.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vqH1kzCXIMQ\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>The Force of Marias<\/em>, winner of three awards in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JW7qmX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">72Hours Film Festival<\/a> in 2017, tells the story of three strong women named Maria from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1TRhmuc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vito Giannoti occupation<\/a>, in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2wy1la0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morro do Pinto<\/a> in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1OpKF5g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centro<\/a>, addressing the housing struggle, resistance, and efforts to find belonging, as well as the popular communication undertaken. The film <em>In Front<\/em>, for its part, showcases social entrepreneurship and technology initiatives that can inspire audiences, like a <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2sZRSF5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">platform for exchanges that uses time as its currency<\/a>, such that you can <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2lubNb9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exchange an hour of your time<\/a> for an hour of someone else&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>The movies were followed by a discussion in which the organizers talked about the importance of claiming this space to show the films and how the similarities among them were greater than the differences, as they all dealt in some way with how people look for solutions to overcome a lack of public services, whether in housing, sanitation and garbage collection, education, or employment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/sensacionais.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44545 size-content\" title=\"Sensacionais do Passinho, a Cantagalo-based dance group\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/sensacionais-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/sensacionais-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/sensacionais-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the film club, there was an electrifying show by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JDQimM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sensacionais do Passinho<\/a>, a group of dancers from the community, and a performance of \u201cUs, Seed,\u201d a powerful piece co-produced by students and teachers from the Teatre-se project, which runs weekly theater classes in Cantagalo. The piece, interwoven with poems and music on the same theme, portrayed situations of physical and moral constraints and harassment that girls and women suffer daily.
