{"id":45111,"date":"2018-07-16T09:21:21","date_gmt":"2018-07-16T12:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=45111"},"modified":"2019-08-19T11:15:46","modified_gmt":"2019-08-19T14:15:46","slug":"120-days-protesters-march-for-marielle-demanding-end-to-state-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=45111","title":{"rendered":"120 Days: Mothers of Slain Children March for Marielle Demanding End to State Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Nn3qdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the night of Thursday, July 12, protesters flooded downtown Rio, marching in remembrance of city councilor<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IsqO7s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marielle Franco<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and victims of police violence throughout Rio de Janeiro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saturday, July 14 marked 120 days since the assassination of Marielle and her driver<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2GJ8hn2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anderson Gomes<\/a>. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">To date, the question <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#QuemMatouMarielle?<\/span><\/i> (#WhoKilledMarielle?) remains unanswered. \u201cIt seems to me that we are arriving at a point of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">impunity, of statistics, and we won\u2019t let that happen,\u201d Marielle\u2019s mother,\u00a0<\/span>Marinete<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> da Silva,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2ujK3dY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told G1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Marielle-Mother-and-Bruna-Silva-e1531506804681.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-45117 size-content\" title=\"Mothers of victims march down Rio Branco. Let us say enough of this racism. We don\u2019t want this for our lives. We weren\u2019t born for this. That\u2019s not why we are here. We cannot accept this. We cannot remain quiet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Monica-Cunha-e1531506486118.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-45113 size-content\" title=\"M\u00f4nica Cunha speaking at Candel\u00e1ria. Photo: Dani Orofino \/ CHAMA Ag\u00eancia Rede\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Monica-Cunha-e1531506486118-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Monica-Cunha-e1531506486118-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Monica-Cunha-e1531506486118-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the investigation into Marielle and Anderson\u2019s murder drags on, international pressure has also mounted.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">On June 12,<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1VGrHLQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amnesty International<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">criticized the lack of progress in the investigation, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2NjVnOx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launching a video of Marielle&#8217;s family<\/a> calling for justice, and<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2uwxjQC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">calling for the creation of an independent oversight body<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. Days earlier, Pakistani human rights activist <a href=\"https:\/\/bbc.in\/2zBnWVm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malala Yousafzai<\/a><\/span> visited Rio on her own birthday\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Jjh274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paid homage to Marielle<\/a>, etching her image on a wall in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1RWn5h2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tavares Bastos<\/a> favela.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Malala-graffiti-marielle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-45115 size-content\" title=\"Malala with Marielle Graffiti. Photo: Handout \/ EPA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Malala-graffiti-marielle-600x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In her time as a city councilor, Marielle\u2014a black, bisexual woman born and raised in the favelas of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?tag=complexo-da-mare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mar\u00e9<\/a>\u2014championed human rights for Rio\u2019s marginalized populations, railing against police abuse and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2JooYnq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state-sponsored violence<\/a> in favelas. On Thursday night, protesters continued her legacy. For activist Maria Dalva Correa da Silva, whose son Thiago was killed by police in the 2003\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2uwOAJd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Borel Massacre<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the protest was a matter of life and death. \u201cWe have to be here in the resistance. We don\u2019t want <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2t0bGY8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">helicopters<\/a>, we don\u2019t want <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Bo39Ez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">armored tanks<\/a> in the favelas, we don\u2019t want guns pointed at us&#8230; The State is constantly present, but only with the barrel of a gun and a bullet to rob us of our bodies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Quem-Matou.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-45118 size-content\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Quem-Matou-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"Quem Matou Marielle\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Quem-Matou-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Quem-Matou-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rio has seen an increased State presence since the Brazilian armed forces assumed control of security as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2FvI7Te\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">federal military intervention<\/a>. The intervention, which has been in effect for five months as of July 16, has done little to improve security.<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2uk5I5X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to the Intervention Observatory<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">a monitoring center hosted at the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xPthUo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Studies on Security and Citizenship\u00a0(CESeC)<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">at<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2utE45N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C\u00e2ndido Mendes University (UCAM)<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">state violence has only increased since February. Between February and May 2018, Rio saw 444 people killed by the police, up 34% in comparison to the three months prior to the intervention. The number of shootouts between February and May increased by 36% compared to the previous four months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bruna Silva, whose son Marcos Vin\u00edcius was killed in a<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Ifz8X0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">joint Armed Forces-Civil Police operation on June 20<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">stood at\u00a0<\/span>t<span style=\"color: #000000;\">he front lines of Thursday\u2019s protest. As she spoke outside City Hall, her daughter stood at her side, holding a sign that read: \u201cThe police didn\u2019t see that my brother <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2MJmdPJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was wearing a school uniform<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Silva, who had spoken to the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2uBOOyO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chamber of Deputies Human Rights Commission<\/a> in Bras\u00edlia days earlier, remarked that the Civil Police classified the operation that killed her son as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/g1.globo.com\/rj\/rio-de-janeiro\/noticia\/relatorio-mostra-que-policia-civil-classificou-como-exitosa-operacao-durante-a-qual-morreu-adolescente-na-mare.ghtml\">successful<\/a>.<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201d She clutched the bloody uniform her son wore that day, asking: \u201cIs this what success looks like?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas On the night of Thursday, July 12, protesters flooded downtown Rio, marching in remembrance of city councilor Marielle Franco and victims of police violence throughout Rio de Janeiro.
