The award is dedicated to \u201cstimulate and promote content production on territories of the peripheries, strengthening a perspective that views them as plural and inventive spaces.&#8221; The four honorees were: indigenous leader <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2Momivs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ailton Krenak,<\/a>\u00a0<em>quilombola<\/em> activist <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2MBSjNG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antonio Bispo dos Santos<\/a> (known as N\u00eago Bispo), international award-winning author <a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2MhL40d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concei\u00e7\u00e3o Evaristo<\/a>,\u00a0and the late City Councilor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IsqO7s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marielle Franco<\/a> (in memoriam).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Mestre-das-Periferias-Jailson-and-Ivana.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-46192 size-content\" title=\"IMJA Director Jailson de Souza e Silva alongside IMJA Journalist Ivana Dorali. Photo: Marcia Farias, IMJA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Mestre-das-Periferias-Jailson-and-Ivana-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Mestre-das-Periferias-Jailson-and-Ivana-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Mestre-das-Periferias-Jailson-and-Ivana-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the organizing team at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2FQ6348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maria and Jo\u00e3o Aleixo Institute<\/a> (IMJA), a periphery-focused think tank based in the favelas of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rNMXO3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo da Mar\u00e9<\/a> in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa3h9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Zone<\/a>,\u00a0Wednesday\u2019s award ceremony played a central role in furthering what they have called the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IRv1p1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paradigm of Potency<\/a>. \u201cPeripheries all over\u2014and favelas primarily\u2014are described in terms of a paradigm of absence, of lacking, of precariousness,&#8221; said IMJA Director Jailson de Souza e Silva. \u201cThis recognition that the periphery is central to the city is still rarely discussed in Brazil as well as in the rest of the world. For us, building this reference is fundamental, and that is what we have been doing since 2016.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-46188 size-content\" title=\"Spectators at the Galp\u00e3o Bela Mar\u00e9. They will also participate in a mini-documentary produced by IMJA on their life trajectories and contributions to positive narratives about the peripheries.<\/p>\n<p>Award recipient Concei\u00e7\u00e3o Evaristo is known for pioneering a style known as <em>escreviv\u00eancia\u2014<\/em>writing based within her lived experience as a black woman. She recently declared her candidacy for membership in the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1JJMlQM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazilian Academy of Letters<\/a>,\u00a0founded in the late 19th century by prolific novelist <a href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/2KRl7Qm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Machado de Assis<\/a>. Photo: Marcia Farias, IMJA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Mestre-das-Periferias-Conceic\u0327a\u0303o-Evaristo-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Mestre-das-Periferias-Conceic\u0327a\u0303o-Evaristo-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Mestre-das-Periferias-Conceic\u0327a\u0303o-Evaristo-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Mestre-das-Periferias-Conceic\u0327a\u0303o-Evaristo-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Mestre-das-Periferias-Conceic\u0327a\u0303o-Evaristo-2.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Wednesday night, however, Evaristo commented that the periphery has more to offer, beyond elite spaces. \u201cWhile the academy and hegemonic culture know only one side of culture, we who come from other cultural spaces are the wise because we know both sides,\u201d said Evaristo. \u201cI am certain that in human terms, this deference, this possibility, this new work for me holds much more meaning for my growth and my insertion in the world than the other titles I have been awarded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indigenous leader Ailton Krenak\u2014renowned for <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KPCbGw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his role in the National Constituent Assembly<\/a>, resulting in decisive <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KPEDwI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indigenous rights victories in the 1988 Constitution<\/a>\u2014echoed Evaristo, hailing the plurality of the peripheries. \u201cWe want to bring other thoughts, other lines of debate on this cultural diversity that we have created, on these multiple places where our poor live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five months after the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2LN7eUi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still-unsolved assassination of Marielle Franco<\/a>, her mother and sister offered a more somber speech. Yet, as Marielle&#8217;s sister Anielle Franco recounted stories from their childhood in Mar\u00e9 and Dona Marinete Franco described what it was like to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2vYhuml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meet Pope Francis<\/a>\u00a0the previous week, the tone felt hopeful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Mestre-das-Periferias-Marielle-Family..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-46210 size-large\" title=\"Marielle Franco honored in memoriam. They won\u2019t silence her mother. They won\u2019t silence this group of people like you all,\u201d Marinete Franco told the audience. She continued: \u201cEvery day I see more and more people in other states and other countries, everyone recognizing who Marielle was and who she continues to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <em>quilombola<\/em> leader and author N\u00eago Bispo recited a poem that he had prepared for the award ceremony. As he spoke, his words seemed to reach far beyond Mar\u00e9: \u201cWe are the beginning, the middle, and the beginning. We will exist forever because, for us, there is no end. Smiling in our sadness to commemorate a life of gladness, we are the movement, of the movement, in the movement.
