{"id":48569,"date":"2018-11-08T08:28:59","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T11:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=48569"},"modified":"2018-11-13T15:28:18","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T18:28:18","slug":"cantagalo-and-pavao-pavaozinho-tackle-waste-management-issues-on-world-cities-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=48569","title":{"rendered":"Cantagalo and Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho Tackle Waste Management Issues on World Cities Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2PsgeV4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1jWA8DL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Cities Day<\/a>\u2014Wednesday, October 31\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rIlhJj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cantagalo<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zpo7zS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho<\/a> in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pfz23A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Zone<\/a>\u00a0served as the meeting point for activists and community initiatives focused on waste management at the event \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Py5Bj5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What do I do with this trash?<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The discussion was hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zp4F6u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fave.Lar<\/a>\u00a0(a social enterprise that works to\u00a0provide technical upgrading assistance for homes in favelas) in partnership with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zpuCTj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favela Hub<\/a>\u00a0(a social innovation and education center of the NGO\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zprLKg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Viva Rio<\/a>) as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Rv5xOj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 Urban Circuit<\/a>,\u00a0a three-month series of events sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zo5oov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations Human Settlement Programme<\/a> (UN-Habitat) to highlight the themes of sustainable development, solid waste management, and resilience. Held at Favela Hub\u2019s space in Cantagalo, overlooking Ipanema and Leblon, the encounter was intended to give exposure to innovative social projects in favelas, while also serving as a networking opportunity to form critical alliances.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48698 size-content\" title=\"Favela Hub's space, located inside the Viva Rio building in Cantagalo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>F\u00e1bio Mor\u00e3es, founder of Fave.Lar, opened the event by speaking on the importance of viewing trash as a social problem, especially in Rio&#8217;s favelas. Mor\u00e3es cited statistics from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zmK2HY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014 Rio de Janeiro State Solid Waste Plan<\/a> (PERS), showing that the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ztjW64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">produces 5,312,042.73 tons of solid urban waste per year<\/a>, which represents 83% of waste in the entire state of Rio de Janeiro. On a more local level, Mor\u00e3es suggested that the community\u2014home to 16,000 residents\u2014thus produces around sixteen tons of waste per day (considering the average regional rate of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zmK2HY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.19 kilograms per capita per day<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-activity-3.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48699 size-content\" title=\"Jorge Tonnera Jr., resident of Vargem Grande, presents on the compost initiatives that he launched in his community. Photo: F\u00e1bio Mor\u00e3es\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-activity-3-e1541531447119-620x264.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-activity-3-e1541531447119-620x264.jpeg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-activity-3-e1541531447119-940x400.jpeg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The event moved on to allow a space for <span style=\"color: #000000;\">community leaders and technical advisors to p<\/span>resent projects that seek to address the challenges described by\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mor\u00e3es.\u00a0<\/span>These social enterprises build upon values of autonomy and sustainability to tackle the serious problems posed by waste collection in favelas, particularly given that the municipal waste collection utility,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zpsRWd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COMLURB<\/a>, does not effectively service favelas\u2014often leading residents to dispose of garbage in places such as sidewalks, creeks, and unofficial landfills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything that is done by the government has a time limit\u2014it has a start and an end date. It makes me sad,\u201d expressed Nivaldo Cavalcante, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2s84T0q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favela + Limpa<\/a>\u00a0and resident of Cantagalo, when speaking about failed government initiatives to keep favelas clean. For this reason, Cavalcante took matters into his own hands. Together with Leandro Abrante, also a Cantagalo resident, Cavalcante created <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Pmb0KQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favela + Limpa<\/a> in Cantagalo and Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho to encourage residents to properly dispose of their waste, compensating those who gather their garbage and recyclable materials with money and cleaning supplies while making creative use of jingles and signs to promote awareness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-48706 size-content\" title=\"Leandro Abrante of Favela + Limpa demonstrates how recycled materials can be reutilized, creating income-generating products such as grills.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-3-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-3-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/favela-hub-3-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jorge Tonnera, Jr., a biologist who specializes in environmental management and education, was another of the event\u2019s speakers. Tonnera leads the projects N\u00e3o Jogue Lixo; Jogue Sementes! (&#8220;Don&#8217;t Throw Trash; Throw Seeds!&#8221;) and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zrjbdW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CompostaVargem<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/29RurDZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vargem Grande<\/a>. His initiatives seek to educate people on the benefits of maintaining community gardens. Tonnera sees his projects as an alternative to the city\u2019s often inaccessible and limited green spaces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2OnKQlh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">De Olho No Lixo Rocinha<\/a>\u2014a project of Viva Rio in partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zpde18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">State Secretary of the Environment<\/a> (SEA)\u2014also presented its multiple projects. As described by Ricardo Gon\u00e7alves, a technical advisor for the initiative, the group works to gather and dispose of waste by delivering it at COMLURB\u2019s collection sites\u2014having collected and removed over 1,186 tons of solid waste since 2016. De Olho No Lixo has also formed a cooperative of more than seventy residents dedicated to recycling, providing a source of income for those involved.<\/p>\n<p>The event concluded with a fishbowl-type group dynamic in which community leaders, activists, and entrepreneurs dialogued about ways to cooperate. \u201cWe are not throwing away our trash. Our trash stays on the planet\u2014our primary home,\u201d emphasized an event participant, referring to the environmental challenges caused by the production of waste. \u201cTrash won\u2019t disappear.
