The line is a tribute to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2uHq4VY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marielle Franco<\/a>, including her in the \u201calternative history\u201d of Brazil exposed by the song. On Wednesday, November 14, these words reverberated inside the Rio de Janeiro City Council in downtown Rio with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zhs8qO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release<\/a> of Marielle\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2FEJB1U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Master&#8217;s thesis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/marielle-thesis.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49088 size-content\" title=\"Marielle's thesis, ttitled: &quot;UPP, the Reduction of the Favela to Three Letters: An Analysis of Public Security Policy in the State of Rio de Janeiro.&quot; Image: N1 Editions\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/marielle-thesis-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/marielle-thesis-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/marielle-thesis-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the culmination of her studies in public administration at the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2G0zpwq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fluminense Federal University<\/a> (UFF), Marielle&#8217;s thesis engages with the role of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Emyquh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pacifying Police Units<\/a>\u00a0(UPPs)\u00a0in favelas and the repression they perpetuated. The publication\u2014titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2A7se3U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UPP, the Reduction of the Favela to Three Letters<\/a>: An Analysis of Public Security Policy in the State of Rio de Janeiro&#8221;\u2014marks the eight-month anniversary of Marielle&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2OnqrOf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assassination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In an atmosphere of both sorrow and intransigence, the release event featured a variety of speakers, both present and recorded, who knew Marielle and her work closely, such as fellow <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dC0T1A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PSOL<\/a>\u00a0representatives\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dprNch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcelo Freixo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2OSmZdD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renata Souza<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2OTQdc7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tarc\u00edsio Motta<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xr7Dq2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Miranda<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2pL4dL7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tal\u00edria Petrone<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xsSIvg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u00f4nica Francisco<\/a>; State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) professor Lia Rocha; along with Marielle&#8217;s partner <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2IP0Yd6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u00f4nica Ben\u00edcio<\/a> and her sister\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bbc.in\/2OSe6B9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anielle Franco<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All of the statements were filled with emotion and words of resistance. Many recounted anecdotes and experiences, while also attempting to articulate how the pain and frustration felt from Marielle\u2019s assassination can be redirected into efforts to push back against the systemic oppression of favelas, black people, and the LGBTQ community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Marielle-Coletivo-Bastardos-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43580 size-content\" title=\"A human rights activist and politician, Marielle Franco was assassinated March 14, 2018.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Marielle-Coletivo-Bastardos-3-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Marielle-Coletivo-Bastardos-3-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Marielle-Coletivo-Bastardos-3-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u201cEntering this place [City Council] is an exercise in confronting reality,&#8221; expressed M\u00f4nica Francisco, one of Marielle&#8217;s former advisors and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ISmgI0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">now a State Representative<\/a> herself. She spoke on Marielle&#8217;s symbolism for today\u2019s social movements, often referring to her as a &#8220;giant.&#8221; \u201cIn her final days of life, Marielle became the giant that we know today. In Marielle&#8217;s words: &#8216;I wasn&#8217;t born to be a martyr.&#8217; She didn&#8217;t know that she would later be<em> chosen<\/em> to be a martyr.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her declaration concluded with a call to transform <em>luto<\/em>\u00a0(&#8220;mourning&#8221;) into <em>luta<\/em>\u00a0(&#8220;struggle&#8221;)\u2014turning collective grief into resistance. \u201cFor us, times have never been sunny. For us, times have always been dark. We will not retreat until we see the Spring.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/marcelo-freixo-video-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49125 size-content\" title=\"Marcelo Freixo, state representative for Rio de Janeiro, was unable to attend the event but sent a video with his message.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/marcelo-freixo-video-1-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/marcelo-freixo-video-1-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/marcelo-freixo-video-1-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nMarcelo Freixo, a Rio de Janeiro state representative recently elected to Federal Deputy, expressed his sentiments in a pre-recorded video. He emphasized the importance of holding the event and lauded Marielle\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2GQs7Ne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiple projects<\/a> and dedication. \u201cIt&#8217;s good to know that people will not forget\u2014they will take this book home with them to have a little bit of Marielle in their homes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/anielle-franco-event.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49091 size-content\" title=\"Anielle Franco witnessed her sister Marielle's frustrations and obstacles while writing her master's thesis. \" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/anielle-franco-event-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/anielle-franco-event-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/anielle-franco-event-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAnielle Franco, Marielle\u2019s younger sister, delivered a heartfelt speech, describing Marielle\u2019s frustrations while writing her thesis. Anielle asked the public to support her family in their grief and please respect the memory of her sister without distorting Marielle into something she was not. \u201cToday, when you say &#8216;Marielle lives!&#8217; Rio de Janeiro needs to know the essence of Marielle, the real Marielle. So today, I ask for respect. I ask for justice. And when you say &#8216;Marielle lives&#8217;\u2014Marielle lives <em>for whom<\/em>?
