{"id":49341,"date":"2018-12-09T09:28:06","date_gmt":"2018-12-09T12:28:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=49341"},"modified":"2018-12-20T04:05:19","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T07:05:19","slug":"eccovida-shares-approach-to-transforming-livelihoods-at-3rd-sustainable-favela-network-exchange-images","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/?p=49341","title":{"rendered":"EccoVida Transforms Livelihoods through Recyclables at 3rd Sustainable Favela Exchange"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2LuR82Z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Clique aqui para Por<\/strong><strong>tugu\u00eas<\/strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2PPjdT4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Favela Network<\/a>\u00a0(SFN) is a project of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ZsEul3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catalytic Communities<\/a>\u00a0(CatComm)* designed to build solidarity networks, bring visibility, and develop joint actions to support the expansion of community-based initiatives that strengthen environmental sustainability and social resilience in favelas across the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region. The project began with the 2012 film\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/FavelaModelo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Favela as a Sustainable Model<\/a>, followed in 2017 by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/SFNlaunch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mapping of 111 sustainability initiatives<\/a>\u00a0and the publication of a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/SFNReport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">final\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0analyzing the results.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In 2018, the project organized\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2018SFNExchanges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on-site exchanges among eight of the oldest and most established organizations<\/a>\u00a0that were mapped in the Sustainable Favela Network (one of which is the subject of this article), followed by a full-day exchange with the entire network that took place on November 10. The eight participants in the on-site exchanges featured in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2018SFNExchanges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this series<\/a>\u00a0include six community-based organizations: the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1JK7H2c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vale Encantado Cooperative<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2iZKaZJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alto da Boa Vista<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2LHmkv6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EccoVida<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2N302bW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hon\u00f3rio Gurgel<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2xNNoER\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verdejar<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1RmnvKV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Engenho da Rainha<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1nEeBwu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/?p=30380\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quilombo do Camorim<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1jfeZUX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jacarepagu\u00e1<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zwaezi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ReciclA\u00e7\u00e3o<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pPY5au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morro dos Prazeres<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Rkm8lR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alfazendo\u2019s Eco Network<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wwjhWi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of God<\/a>. In addition, the exchanges visited two broader initiatives focusing beyond favelas with extensive experience in sustainability:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bzRPIA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Onda Verde<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2AmrfLU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nova Igua\u00e7u<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2yaURxC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sepetiba Ecomuseum<\/a>. Participants in the exchange witnessed one side of this story in the morning, walking the trails of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1JhMKdb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Serra da Miseric\u00f3rdia<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2PnpR2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learning about agroforestry with Verdejar<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1RmnvKV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Engenho da Rainha<\/a>. During the second half of the third day-long exchange, the SFN group discovered another key component of the region\u2019s sustainability movement: EccoVida&#8217;s recycling facility, where the organization runs the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2LHmkv6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Brazil ECCO Point<\/a>\u00a0project. Driving the streets with a speaker system attached to his car, he repurposed the lyrics from a popular funk song to encourage residents to recycle household materials. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2LjrOQm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Listen here<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAll residents can collaborate, separating trash to recycle. So I\u2019ll teach you how to recycle, separating in each bag, what I tell you. There&#8217;s plastic, glass and metal, paper and cardboard. The\u00a0AutoPET will pass, and collect it at your door. With this attitude, we&#8217;ll all help to reduce waste and stop flooding. Recycle this idea, my friend and my brother, hear this message that comes from the heart, help preserve the environment. Together we will live a happier future. Collect, collect, collect to preserve.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>EccoVida works to mobilize communities around \u201cthe idea that trash does not exist,\u201d focusing on organizing cooperatives of recyclable materials collectors and centers to organize recycled materials, in addition to providing environmental education for schools and businesses, providing environmental consulting services, participating in Rio\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2PedKF2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zero Waste<\/a>\u00a0initiative, and organizing nature walks. EccoVida was even the city of Rio\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2MPVn8w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official recycling partner<\/a> during the 2016 Olympic Games: 32 cooperatives and 220 trash collectors in EccoVida\u2019s network returned from about one month of work during the Olympics with between R$4,000\u20137,000 (US$1,000\u20131,750) each\u2014generating both financial and environmental benefits that represent EccoVida&#8217;s larger model.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sorted-PET.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49649\" title=\"Material gets sorted, in this case plastic bottles\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sorted-PET.jpg\" alt=\"Material gets sorted, in this case plastic bottles\" width=\"620\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sorted-PET.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sorted-PET-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sorted-PET-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sorted-PET-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sorted-PET-580x326.jpg 580w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sorted-PET-174x98.jpg 174w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Freitas explained that when he created EccoVida, his understanding of sustainability centered around his needs and his own experiences. With time, however, Freitas learned that environmental issues extend beyond his home, his street, and even his country. He now believes that protecting the environment is a global issue.<\/p>\n<p>Freitas told SFN members that he fell in love with the work in part because of its potential to provide livelihoods, pointing to his own family as an example. He was able to support his three children through college because of his work with EccoVida: all three of them concentrated on some type of environmental studies. There&#8217;s a lot of talk about sustainability but nothing is done in practice,\u201d Freitas told the SFN group.<\/p>\n<p>As Freitas \u201cbegan creating ways of thinking\u201d about the environment, he found that education wasn\u2019t what was lacking: \u201cI saw that what was lacking were options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Edson-presents.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49655\" title=\"Edson presents to SFN members\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Edson-presents.jpg\" alt=\"Edson presents to SFN members\" width=\"620\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Edson-presents.jpg 4000w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Edson-presents-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Edson-presents-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Edson-presents-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Edson-presents-580x326.jpg 580w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Edson-presents-174x98.jpg 174w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He explained that local government and tax systems incentivize environmental degradation more than they encourage protection, saying: \u201cThey consider me worse than the guy that cuts down trees.\u201d Despite years spent lobbying for policies to promote recycling, Freitas has long seen his cause neglected by public authorities. \u201cWho is interested in <em>not<\/em> preserving the environment, in <em>not<\/em> generating income? Who is interested in this <em>not<\/em> happening?&#8221; Freitas asked, pointing to special interests that maintain Rio&#8217;s landfills. &#8220;They know that we exist but they close their eyes\u2026 They don\u2019t want us to grow, to become more formalized, because once people are more aware [of the benefits of recycling], they will change economic markets,\u201d he said. Citing examples of unfair tax rates levied on recycling cooperatives, Freitas explained: &#8220;This is why I say that society has to participate. But this attitude of wasting this money and these raw materials doesn&#8217;t generate jobs and income. What is generated? Waste and pollution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Chips.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-49646\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Chips.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Chips.jpg 1124w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Chips-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Chips-768x1367.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Chips-575x1024.jpg 575w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>As the group witnessed the transformation that occurs at EccoVida\u2019s center, members shared recycling-related stories and questions. For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2bzRPIA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Onda Verde<\/a> founder Helio Vanderlei told SFN members that in Volta Redonda, a municipality located approximately 80 miles away, the local government pays recyclable materials collectors R$625 (US$150) per ton of recycled materials. Freitas expressed disbelief as the payment rate far exceeds that offered by the city of Rio. In Volta Redonda, however, cooperatives of recyclable materials collectors face a different set of challenges: they aren&#8217;t able to collect as many tons of materials as they potentially could due to a lack of training and resources needed in order to effectively mobilize, Vanderlei explained.<\/p>\n<p>Observing the pure quantity of recyclable materials in EccoVida\u2019s headquarters alone, several SFN members grew excited by the potential of bringing sustainable jobs to their communities. Representatives from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2yaURxC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sepetiba Ecomuseum<\/a>, for example, asked Freitas how they could go about starting recycling collectives, brainstorming how they could collect and transport materials and who from their network would be interested in participating.
