Resistance emerges in innumerable expressions, the diversity of which was highlighted at the \u201cCirculando\u2013Dialogue and Communication in the Favela<\/a>\u201d\u00a0event in\u00a0Complexo do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>, in the North Zone<\/a> of Rio de Janeiro, last\u00a0Saturday, December 1.<\/p>\n

The event sought to engage productive discussions among traditionally marginalized communities through a series of presentations and activities. The day-long annual festival occupied Avenida Central, Morro do Alem\u00e3o<\/a>‘s main road, from 10am to 9pm with music, theater, dance, graffiti, food, fashion, and more.<\/p>\n

Celebrating its 14th edition, Circulando takes its name from the Portuguese verb meaning \u201cto circulate.\u201d This year\u2019s theme was “Diversities,” stimulating conversations surrounding themes of diversity, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class. Together with other local partners, the event was organized by the Roots in Movement Institute (Instituto Ra\u00edzes em Movimento<\/a>), a community-based organization focused on the cultural and social development of Complexo do Alem\u00e3o and other favelas.<\/p>\n

From early in the morning, adults and children stenciled inspiring messages on colorful papers. Taking place alongside the art workshop, one of the first activities of the day was a discussion circle centered on youth and human rights. In their headquarters, Instituto Ra\u00edzes em Movimento held a class on living memories with community educators\u00a0Gizele Martins<\/a> and Frans\u00e9rgio Goulart<\/a>, exploring memories of the dictatorship and oppression. Later on, collaborators organized artistic activities for children.<\/p>\n

After lunch, the afternoon’s activities began with two\u00a0indigenous speakers, Yracema Sussuarana Tupinamb\u00e1 and Taquari, members of the\u00a0Tupinamb\u00e1 of Oliven\u00e7a<\/a>\u00a0indigenous community from the Itapu\u00e3 Village in Ilh\u00e9us, in the Northeastern state of Bahia<\/a>. They spoke on the\u00a0FavelAldeia<\/a>\u00a0exchange, an initiative to bring together favela residents from Alem\u00e3o with indigenous peoples from their village, and described their experiences and forms of resistance. Afterward, the speakers invited the public to join them to celebrate a Tupinamb\u00e1 ritual known as “Porancy” that reconnects people to the land and to their ancestors.<\/p>\n

Next came a statement from Occupy Alem\u00e3o<\/a>, calling all the attendees to become allies in fighting for the liberty of\u00a0Rafael Braga<\/a>\u2014a young black man from\u00a0Vila Cruzeiro<\/a>\u00a0who was unjustly incarcerated<\/a> twice and contracted tuberculosis in prison. He is currently under house arrest while receiving treatment, but the group is fighting to demand full amnesty for Braga.<\/p>\n

The first of a series of performances, Bloco d\u2019\u00c1guas<\/a>\u00a0moved the crowd to their refreshing samba and maracatu<\/em><\/a> songs, followed other artistic presentations including a theatrical performance by Quitta Pinheiro<\/a>\u00a0and the exhibition of the film The Sacred Within Us<\/em><\/a>. Simultaneously, a headwrap workshop attracted women and children to learn about this fashion item with symbolic significance within black communities, while a relaxation tent offered massages. Slam poetry collective\u00a0Slam Laje<\/a>\u00a0and theater group Teatro da Laje<\/a> then occupied the stage, bringing laughter and deep reflections to spectators.<\/p>\n

The final hours of the event were filled with forr\u00f3<\/em><\/a> music and a full dance floor, bringing this celebration of diversity and identity to a joyous ending.<\/p>\n
