Each peripheral region had a group or solo artist who advocated for equality, freedom, and unity, as the &#8220;king of soul&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2BDWJQF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Brown<\/span><\/a>\u00a0would say<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In its genesis, hip hop was protest music. It&#8217;s no coincidence that Chuck D, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2BACTFW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Enemy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s messianic leader, labeled rap \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2DPxgFr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Black CNN<\/a>.<\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a form of artistic expression that typically combines urban fashion, graffiti, and rap performances (rap is an English acronym for \u201crhythm and poetry,&#8221; which over the years has gained a Portuguese adaptation,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201c<em>rep<\/em>\u201d for &#8220;ritmo e poesia&#8221;), in addition to battles between MCs, hip hop has undergone several transformations. It acquired new clothing styles and musical textures, began to be consumed by all classes, came face-to-face with both Brazilian\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">funk of humble origins and\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1zflqMP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ostentatious funk<\/a>,&#8221; flirted with artists outside of the genre, and in the end, became a factory of hits. Hip hop now operates in a \u201cnew-old\u201d context as yet another form of resistance\u2014this time, back in its own communities (again).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-content wp-image-51362\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-2-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-2-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-2-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discussion group hosted by the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2SxU70g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lanatanpa Family<\/span><\/a>\u00a0project<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a monthly event in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2NczwK5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pantanal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> neighborhood in the periphery of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1QrPbnc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duque de Caxias<\/a>, in Greater Rio&#8217;s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wAJ14x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baixada Fluminense<\/span><\/a>\u2014is the second initiative of its kind. The first, in Lagoinha\u2014in the periphery of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1FbLgis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nova Igua\u00e7u<\/a>\u2014was developed alongside martial arts and other sports programs to gain legitimacy due to a certain distaste on the part of the more conservative Pentecostal churches that believe that hip hop &#8220;is for criminals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHere, we don&#8217;t have a problem with them [evangelicals], but I&#8217;ve heard disapproving comments about this type of music, the clothes and all. I would like for them to better understand what is happening, how the project works, and what our true intentions are. This is a cultural necessity\u2014an exchange of information that we see as most urgent. It\u2019s what young people wanted. It\u2019s what the neighborhood needed,\u201d says Juliana Maia, one of the founders of\u00a0Lanatanpa.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Hip Hop Is Not a Crime<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, there are efforts to demystify the prejudice surrounding young people who participate in the gatherings. For example, at events organized via social media, it is common for the organizers of Lanatanpa (an anagram of Pantanal) to explicitly position themselves against the consumption of illicit drugs, even creating\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2T6JSk5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for this purpose. There is a repurposed\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refrigerator that serves as a miniature library where the exchange of books is free and encouraged. Since its creation in 2015, the sociocultural project has sought to bridge health, education, art,\u00a0and knowledge through hip hop. The group also collects donations such as clothes and nonperishable foods for some of the lowest-income residents in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51363 size-content\" title=\"Group discussion on the environment in Pra\u00e7a do Sossego in the Pantanal neighborhood in Duque de Caxias. Photo: Fabio Leon\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-3-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-3-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-3-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a roundtable discussion tackling environmental issues, Diana Rodrigues\u2014a literature teacher and trans woman\u2014and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wallace Oliveira, an ethnic relations researcher at the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2D8GNpA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celso Suckow da Fonseca Federal Center for Technology Education<\/a> (CEFET), explored contemporary issues that are central to the subject. One such issue,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2T1k7RU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environmental racism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, should feature more prominently in discussion in the near future\u2014especially in view of the agenda of President Jair Bolsonaro, who appears to be attempting to morph environmental issues into ideologically slanted taboos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other discussion topics included green business, urban mobility, sustainable consumption, and organic and family farming. On the latter topic, Rodrigues admitted to being unfamiliar with local initiatives in the Baixada Fluminense, which is quite symptomatic of the issue at hand. The existence of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2TseJo5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farmers Market cooperative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Nova Igua\u00e7u was brought up in conversation\u2014a group formed exclusively by rural farmers and sponsored by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2G4xP0h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pastoral Land Commission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an entity linked to the Catholic Church with a focus on rural areas. The largest environmental issue in Duque de Caxias\u2014perhaps in all of the Baixada Fluminense\u2014was also raised during the discussion: the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/10l18Tt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardim Gramacho<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0landfill, which continues to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2TCQaVg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receive truckloads of waste<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even after being\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1ERrq0g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deactivated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51364 size-content\" title=\"Teacher Diana Rodrigues in the discussion group on the environment. Photo: Fabio Leon\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-4-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-4-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-4-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Where There&#8217;s Flow, There&#8217;s No Trap<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the group discussion, the time came to turn up the bass <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groove <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and fire up the music.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DJ in position, it&#8217;s time to have fun. The crowd is diverse. There are graffiti artists, artisans, poets\u2014and breakdancers, of course. The setting is Pra\u00e7a do Sossego, a lively place in the community on the weekends. Kiosks selling french fries, a\u00e7a\u00ed, barbeque, and other treats skirt the surroundings. In the middle of the square, the scene is divided. On one side, the MCs warm up, spitting their rhymes. On the other side, a group of Catholics armed with microphones sing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">praises and hymns<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and announce evangelizing activities to the crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We took the time to swap ideas with Anderson Maia, Lanatanpa Family&#8217;s intellectual mentor. A refrigeration technician by trade to make ends meet, he said he had the idea to create a cultural project along the lines of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HI1jCO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Livrar<\/span><\/a>\u2014a<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n initiative by the artist MC Marechal, founder of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2DPtXhl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowledge Battles<\/span><\/a>\u2014<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which became an attraction at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2N6lyt9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rio Museum of Art<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MAR)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Pra\u00e7a Mau\u00e1, in the Port Region of the city. Different from traditional MC battles in which the exchange of versed \u201cinsults\u201d on pre-recorded\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beats\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevails, as a way to test participants&#8217; ability to improvise (freestyle) a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd the creativity of their rhymes, in the Knowledge Battle, participants engage in a process of collective reflection as they tackle daily issues such as human rights, violence, racism, education, sexism, etc. In other words, the target of insults becomes the system itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51365 size-content\" title=\"Anderson Maia (front), the organizer of Lanatanpa: &quot;I wanted to give these youth an opportunity to have fun in a socially conscious way.&quot; Photo: Fabio Leon\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-5-e1550134512472-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-5-e1550134512472-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-5-e1550134512472-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maia explains how this changed his life: \u201cIt affected me in such a way that I felt almost obligated to do something for my community. I was raised with hip hop and I wanted to share this with the young people of Pantanal. When we go to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa3h9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Zone<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2N4qlej\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lapa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we almost always need to worry about several things, including our safety. This distance mobilized me to create Lanatanpa Family.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who joins and helps to create the movement? We spoke to a few artists to hear their stories. One of them, MC Coman, says he was an avid evangelical churchgoer in the neighborhood. Due to a physical disability resulting from an accident, he tried to regain his self-esteem through faith but ended up disillusioned. \u201cPeople from church\u00a0started making fun of me. I knew there was an event called the 5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2G6tERE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rap Free Jazz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Battle in Pra\u00e7a do Galo, over there in Parque Fluminense [in Duque de Caxias]. I already liked the style and there, I channeled all of my anger into rhymes. People saw that I was upset by what had happened and wanted to get to know me better. They called to find out how I was doing. I found a greater sense of belonging in the hip hop movement than in church,&#8221; said Coman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Hip-Hop-Baixada-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51366 size-content\" title=\"The night begins with the start of a rap battle in the square. Coman says there are two types of rappers: those who advocate for &#8220;flow&#8221;\u2014that is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are concerned with the fluidity with which the lyrics meld with the rhythm of each verse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and those who belong to the &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trap&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">category, a less lyrical style in which musicality prevails over verbiage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marilza Barbos\u2014an activist from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2w01vCH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State Front for De-Incarceration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2KutsxD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baixada Fluminense Network of Mothers and Relatives of Victims of State Violence<\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grita Baixada Forum, as well as a resident of Pantanal\u2014says she is surprised by the results achieved by Lanatanpa Family thus far. She went from being an admirer to a supporter of the project: \u201cI love the organization. They have an infrastructure, which comes from the collaboration of several local people. In a unique way, Lanatanpa helped occupy a space that always belonged to the church or <i><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2ImfvSv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pagode<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>musicians. They demonstrate the importance of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0promoting and supporting cultural diversity.
