Grow Up So I Can Kill You Too&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2N3PC8E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23766\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/PT-e1439583827971.png\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>For the original article in Portuguese by Leonardo Coelho published by Ponte Jornalismo click\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2N3PC8E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Military Police officer threatened eight-year-old boy during operation that left thirteen dead in Rio de Janeiro; mother accuses officers of sending a message from illiterate son&#8217;s cell phone<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the afternoon of February 12\u2014three days after the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2N6kFAD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rio de Janeiro State Military Police (PMERJ) operation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2BCSk0h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left twelve dead<\/a> in the communities of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aYf6Tn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fallet<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1wSocaK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fogueteiro<\/a> and three more in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1pPY5au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morro dos Prazeres<\/a>\u00a0in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1p1GMFc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Central Rio<\/a>, according to the latest information\u2014a meeting took place to bring together victims&#8217; families and human rights defenders. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2SRBq7Z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reports of abuses<\/a> and executions rang out at the meeting. The human rights defenders present estimate that the circumstances indicate extrajudicial executions committed by the police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rio de Janeiro State Public Defender&#8217;s Office, one of the entities present at the meeting, spoke with dozens of relatives and friends of those killed, arriving at a scene that could only be considered a massacre. In Fallet, seven bodies were found in one house and four brothers were found dead in two separate houses. In Fogueteiro, the operation resulted in one death. Three people were killed in Morro dos Prazeres, one was taken to the hospital later on Friday, February 8, and two were found by residents on Saturday, February 9, for a total of fifteen people killed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Operation-Fallet-Fogueteiro.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51355 size-large\" title=\"Military Police officers rest their legs on the bodies of those slain in Morro do Fallet. For Strozenberg, a human rights specialist, the reports\u00a0almost unanimously\u00a0indicate that extrajudicial executions took place. \u201cThere are several videos and witnesses who saw what happened. Now it\u2019s up to the Homicide Division of Rio&#8217;s Civil Police and the Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office to do their work in a timely manner,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for Tatiana Antunes Carvalho, 38, the mother of Felipe Guilherme Antunes and aunt of Enzo Sousa Carvalho\u2014two of those killed in the operation carried out by the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE), known as the elite troop of Rio&#8217;s Military Police\u2014the damage caused by the massacre endures. According to Carvalho, one of her youngest children\u2014who is only eight years old\u2014heard one of the police officers involved in the massacre issue the following threat shortly thereafter: \u201cKilling your brother was a job well done. Grow up so that I can kill you too.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relatives of the deceased and residents of the three communities were consistent in their reports of psychological terror and intimidation by the Black Berets, as BOPE Military Police officers are called, during Friday&#8217;s events. They reported that officers who had already been expelled from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1vxpBnf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pacifying Police Units<\/a> (UPPs) had returned to work in the communities and participated in this operation\u2014information that has not been officially confirmed by <em>Ponte<\/em>. According to residents who did not wish to be identified, some of the police in the troop were from the Shock Battalion, while others were from BOPE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Meeting-Fallet-Fogueteiro-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51340 size-large\" title=\"A mother, who asked not to be identified, who lost two children in the police operation. The mother of one of the slain youths recounts the fear she felt upon receiving text messages from her son after checking in on him, worried about the shootout. \u201cMy son was illiterate. He only ever sent audio messages,\u201d she said, suspecting that the messages were sent by the BOPE officers who killed him. Another mother said that friends of her son, worried about his safety, asked if everything was okay. They received coffin and skull emojis in response.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3>42 Deaths in Ten Days<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glo.bo\/2SUSCJE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey published<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the newspaper<em> Extra<\/em>\u00a0using data from the Military Police released by the Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office shows that 42 people were killed in police operations in the ten-day period between January 30 and February 8. &#8220;Last year, we already had our <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2A7vayx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highest historical rate of state lethality<\/a>. These numbers are very concerning because what is expected is a [public security] model that preserves life,&#8221; said Strozenberg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For law student\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2SNmTtT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deize Carvalho<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who lost her son to state violence in 2008,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the (new) administrations of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2SMRwj4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wilson Witzel<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2SNo0tz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Christian Party<\/a>\u2013PSC), governor of Rio de Janeiro, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2r3twM2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jair Bolsonaro<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Ov0Gj2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Liberty Party<\/a>\u2013PSL), president of Brazil, have already <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2BABrnt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made it clear that they will protect police<\/a>, making unity and solidarity among mothers and relatives all the more necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf they disagree with the coroners, these mothers must request that their children be exhumed in order to conduct a counter-report to find out what happened,\u201d says Carvalho, who independently fought to ensure that her son&#8217;s murder not go unpunished. \u201cThe death penalty has been decreed for those who dare stand against this government\u2014but these mothers cannot give up, regardless of whether or not their slain [sons] are guilty,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Clique aqui para Portugu\u00eas For the original article in Portuguese by Leonardo Coelho published by Ponte Jornalismo click\u00a0here.
