The <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2S2aId6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cultural occupation<\/a> was organized with the aim of pressuring Mayor Marcelo Crivella to fulfill the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1YkZNnc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City&#8217;s agreement to upgrade<\/a> the community (signed in 2016) and demand that the name of the &#8220;Olympic Center&#8221; Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station be changed to &#8220;Vila Aut\u00f3dromo&#8221; BRT.<\/em><\/p>\n<h1 id=\"title_div\">March Through the BRT Station<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ocupa-BRT-2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51426 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ocupa-BRT-2-679x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"935\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ocupa-BRT-2-679x1024.jpg 679w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ocupa-BRT-2-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ocupa-BRT-2-768x1159.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ocupa-BRT-2.jpg 1882w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1OF9jzT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">community&#8217;s motto<\/a> is &#8220;Vila Aut\u00f3dromo exists, resists, insists, and re-exists.&#8221; The community, which began to be constructed <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rtuaxu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the 1960s<\/a> on the banks of the Jacarepagu\u00e1 Lagoon in Rio&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1kZa7gI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West Zone<\/a>, has suffered countless eviction attempts over the course of its history. The urgency of the community&#8217;s fight for permanence and for dignified housing in the city of Rio de Janeiro made Vila Aut\u00f3dromo an international symbol of the struggle for housing rights. As stated by resident Sandra Maria de Souza: &#8220;People arrive here without knowing the history of the place, without understanding what happened here. This was the doing of [the architect] who designed this absurd thing. But I&#8217;m going to explain why they did this\u2014why they created this structure: to justify the eviction of many people. To Carnival beats, the &#8220;Biquinis de Ogod\u00f4, featuring Sungas de Odara&#8221; marching band led participants across the overpass, eventually arriving in the community.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ocupa-BRT-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51430 size-large\" residents evicted from Vila Aut\u00f3dromo who came to speak about the struggle and take part in the continued resistance effort. The performance concluded with each audience member receiving a handful of dirt and a seed.
