In Rio de Janeiro<\/h3>\n

On March 14 in Rio de Janeiro, the day began with flowers, flags, and banners commemorating Marielle Franco<\/a> at different locations across the city during “Dawn for Marielle and Anderson<\/a>.” Marielle’s face was framed by a rainbow as dawn broke at the Lapa Arches, one of the city’s main tourist attractions. In light of the arrest of the perpetrators of the crime<\/a> earlier in the week, the question that permeated the day was:\u00a0“Who ordered Marielle’s assassination?”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In\u00a0Est\u00e1cio<\/a>, in Central Rio, at the intersection where the shots<\/a> that put an end to Marielle’s life were fired, mothers whose children were victims of state violence read poems in memory of their children and Marielle. “Marielle was also our mother in a way,” one of the mothers said.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>
\nThe entire day was filled with activities<\/a>. Socialism and Liberty Party<\/a> (PSOL) city councilor Tarc\u00edsio Motta<\/a> and representatives Renata Souza<\/a>, M\u00f4nica Francisco<\/a>, Fl\u00e1vio Serafini<\/a>, and Glauber Braga<\/a> paid tribute to Marielle by occupying the steps of the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly<\/a> (ALERJ) with 365 sunflowers, the symbol of Marielle’s campaign, and a banner emphasizing the question: “Who ordered Marielle’s assassination?”<\/p>\n

\nAt the same location, another banner raised by women walking on stilts read: “Marielle, a Giant.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>
\nFrom there, the lawmakers walked to Candel\u00e1ria\u2014one of the most important churches in the city, the site of the Candel\u00e1ria rally<\/a> during the Diretas J\u00e1!<\/a> (“Direct Elections Now!”) movement that brought an end to the dictatorship in the 1980s, but also the scene of the Candel\u00e1ria Massacre<\/a>\u00a0in which police killed eight homeless, mainly youth, in 1993.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

At the end of the Catholic celebration, Afro-Brazilian religious practitioners drummed and paid their own tribute to Marielle at the entrance of the church.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Across the city in Santa Cruz<\/a>, the demonstration “West Zone for Marielle<\/a>” organized by Coletivo Piracema<\/a> honored the city councilor in a space that they described<\/a> as “home to many black women from the periphery who saw in Marielle hope for public policies geared towards the poorest.”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

On the same day, the Human Rights Commission of the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (ALERJ)\u2014presided by recently elected state representative Renata Souza, formerly aid to Marielle\u2014held its first meeting of the year<\/a>. Planned actions include two public hearings, one to discuss police operations in favelas and another to discuss the\u00a0massacres in the Baixada Fluminense<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Also in ALERJ, the proposal to grant Marielle Franco the Dandara Prize<\/a> was approved.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In the afternoon, a public lecture<\/a> titled “I Am Because We Are” took place in Cinel\u00e2ndia Square. The teach-in was led by Thula Pires\u2014an Afro-Brazilian religious practitioner, constitutional law professor, and coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Nucleus for Afro-Brazilian Thought and Memory<\/a> at the Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro<\/a> (PUC-Rio). The event was especially significant in light of Marielle’s commitment to public education and the value that she placed on involving black knowledge, important references, and individuals in the process of constructing knowledge.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

At the same time, the event “Carolina, Abdias, and Marielle: Lives, Ancestrality, and Continuity<\/a>” was held at the Mar\u00e9 Arts Center<\/a>\u00a0in Marielle’s native favela of Mar\u00e9, to commemorate the birthdays of Carolina Maria de Jesus<\/a> and Abdias do Nascimento<\/a> and the death of Marielle Franco\u2014three important black intellectuals.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The night concluded in Rio de Janeiro with a political and cultural demonstration<\/a> in Cinel\u00e2ndia Square, including a series of cultural manifestations in honor of Marielle\u2014from\u00a0jongo<\/em>\u00a0cirles to urban dance performances and poetry battles.<\/p>\n

\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Other Cities Across Brazil<\/h3>\n

Demonstrations also took place in other cities in Brazil. In S\u00e3o Paulo<\/a>, the demonstration began on Avenida Paulista<\/a> with public lectures on Marielle’s legacy led by Jupiara Castro<\/a> from the Black Consciousness Nucleus at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo<\/a> and on race and gender led by state representative \u00c9rica Malunguinho<\/a> (PSOL) to the backdrop of “Black Lives Matter” chants. An interfaith demonstration in honor of Marielle and her driver Anderson Gomes was also held. The demonstration continued along the street in the rain.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Bras\u00edlia<\/a>, Brazil’s capital, members of Congress leading a demonstration<\/a> to demand answers surrounding who ordered the assassination were surprised by a demonstration against the mistreatment of animals, including audio recordings of barking dogs, organized by members of the current president’s far-right Social Liberty Party<\/a> (PSL). The act was interpreted by many as an attempt at distraction or even intended to insult the memory of Marielle.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A demonstration also took place in the streets of Bras\u00edlia<\/a> with the distribution of Marielle Franco street signs, which have become a global symbol of the spread of her legacy after the street named in her honor outside Rio’s city council last year had the original street sign vandalized\u2014broken in a public act<\/a>\u2014by PSL politicians.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Porto Alegre<\/a>, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, thousands gathered for a demonstration at the so-called\u00a0Democratic Corner<\/a>, one of the main meeting points for political demonstrations in the city.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Fortaleza<\/a>, in the state of Cear\u00e1, a demonstration took place<\/a> at Pra\u00e7a da Gentil\u00e2ndia.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Bel\u00e9m<\/a>, in the state of Par\u00e1, thousands of people gathered<\/a> at a demonstration in front of the S\u00e3o Br\u00e1s Market.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Belo Horizonte<\/a>, Minas Gerais, a demonstration took place<\/a> on the Santa Tereza Bridge.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Aracaju<\/a>, Sergipe, a demonstration took place in front of City Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Pelotas<\/a>, Rio Grande do Sul, a demonstration took place at Chafadriz Cal\u00e7ad\u00e3o<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Around the World<\/h3>\n

Demonstrations to honor Marielle and demand answers to the crime were also organized in cities around the world<\/a>. In Melbourne, Australia, approximately 100 people, including Brazilians and local activists\u2014some of whom had worked with Marielle in Rio\u2014gathered in front of the State Library of Victoria<\/a>. With videos celebrating Marielle’s life and Mangueira’s samba theme song, those present declared that her death was not in vain, “for she is a seed.”<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>
\nIn addition to seeking justice for Marielle, demonstrators in Berlin demanded the guarantee of land rights for small farmers and indigenous peoples in light of the threats that these groups have suffered in the current political scenario.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Lisbon, Portugal, approximately 300 people gathered in Pra\u00e7a Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es<\/a> to commemorate Marielle.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Also in Portugal, in the city of Porto, a demonstration was organized<\/a> by the Antifascist Brazilian Immigrant Front of Porto<\/a> (FIBRA).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Coimbra, a demonstration organized by Voices in the World \u2013 Front for Brazilian Democracy<\/a> took place in Pra\u00e7a 8 de Maio<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Brussels, the fa\u00e7ade of the Mission of Brazil to the European Union<\/a>\u00a0was graffitied with words demanding clarity surrounding the Brazilian government’s involvement in Marielle’s death.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Buenos Aires, there was a demonstration in honor of Marielle at the Obelisk<\/a>, the city’s most famous tourist attraction. Coletivo Passarinho<\/a> and Brazilians who live in the city distributed Marielle Franco street signs throughout the city<\/a> and changed the name of the Rio de Janeiro metro station to “Rio de Janeiro-Marielle Franco” station.<\/p>\n

In Montevideo, Uruguay, there was a demonstration in front of the Faculty of the Humanities<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A demonstration took place in front of the Brazilian Embassy<\/a> in London, United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There was also a demonstration in Madrid, Spain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

One took place in Amsterdam, Holland<\/a> as well, with the support of Amnesty International.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Switzerland, there was a demonstration in Bern, the capital city<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Brazilian tourists extended a banner in Pisa, Italy.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Also in Italy, a demonstration took place in Bologna<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In the United States, there was a discussion and commemoration of Marielle Franco at New York University<\/a> (NYU); a discussion on black feminisms in honor of Marielle at Princeton University<\/a>; a discussion on structural racism and Marielle’s Legacy at the UCLA<\/a>, where a demonstration also took place in front of City Hall on Sunday; as well as a vigil at Brown University<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There was also a demonstration in front of the White House in Washington, D.C.<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

On Tuesday, March 12, a lecture titled “The Other Side of Violence: Marielle Franco and the Struggle for Brazilian Democracy<\/a>” took place at Harvard University in Boston. On March 14, Harvard hosted another lecture titled “Racism, Femicide, Homophobia: the Brazilian Tragedy in Historical Perspective<\/a>,” in which Marielle was commemorated.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A vigil was also held<\/a> in Ottawa, Canada with the support of Amnesty International.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Paris, France, a vigil was held in the rain<\/a> in honor of human rights defenders with the presence of writer and black intellectual Concei\u00e7\u00e3o Evaristo<\/a>.<\/p>\n
