Check out their <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2EKWClE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook page<\/a> for upcoming events.<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How to Contribute<\/span><\/strong>: Participate in events, volunteer, and financially support the initiative.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Founded in 1897, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1jqQCNc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Provid\u00eancia<\/a>, original named Favela Hill, was Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2dQQPCf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first community known as a &#8216;favela&#8217;<\/a>. 122 years after its inception, the community has emerged as a shining example of favelas&#8217; cultural richness and a symbol of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Fhf4uE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">struggle for housing justice<\/a>, in view of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2svYt8b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Provid\u00eancia&#8217;s historical importance<\/a> for the city of Rio and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>While the surrounding <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1iwThVm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Port Region<\/a> has seen urban renewal in recent years, systemic neglect and stigmatization have gone on for far too long in Provid\u00eancia, according to community leader Cintia Sant&#8217;Anna. Sant&#8217;Anna, who was born and raised in the community, has big dreams for local youth\u2014particularly in view of Provid\u00eancia&#8217;s global significance. Sant&#8217;Anna is the leader of the community-based organization <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2EKWClE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Entre o C\u00e9u e a Favela<\/a> (Between the Sky and the Favela), which works to preserve the community\u2019s culture while providing educational assistance and opportunities to youth, local artists and entrepreneurs. Today, the collective is composed of\u00a0Elen Ferreira (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Pfi2gP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pretinhas Leitoras<\/a>), Andreza Santos (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/31PIpzT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caiz Store<\/a>), Isabel Meiroz (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Fmt2nE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Epicentral<\/a>), Joyce Marques (<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Rx7H0W\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Favelagrafia<\/a>), and Sant&#8217;Anna herself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/entreuceu1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-52736 size-content\" title=\"Cintia Sant'Anna (center) and community members at Espa\u00e7o Epicentral. Photo: Entre o C\u00e9u e a Favela Facebook page\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/entreuceu1-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beginning in 2012 through a grant from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1nnSjMv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ag\u00eancia de Redes para Juventude<\/a> (Network for Youths Agency), Entre o C\u00e9u e a Favela was founded on the idea of creating what was, at the time, Provid\u00eancia\u2019s only local newspaper and community media source. Although the community newspaper was beneficial to the community, Sant&#8217;Anna felt that her skills as an actress and artist weren\u2019t being utilized. So after three months of running the newspaper, \u201cI began to do cultural activities,\u201d Sant&#8217;Anna says. \u201cI began to teach storytelling and then theater classes.\u201d That\u2019s when the organization truly began to resemble what it is today, eventually developing its own website and acquiring the collaborative space for social development initiatives, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2L0luMO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Epicentral<\/a>, where the organization is currently based. There, they host community meetings and hold numerous workshops and activities for children and cultural producers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Pfi2gP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pretinhas Leitoras<\/a> (&#8220;Black Young Readers&#8221;), <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aMZ7t8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bando Teatro Favela<\/a> (&#8220;Favela Theater Band&#8221;), and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2UrdDZv\">Produ\u00e7\u00e3o de Guerrilha<\/a> (&#8220;Guerrilla Production&#8221;) are among the group&#8217;s thirteen current projects that engage youth and cultural producers alike.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/cintia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-52773 size-content\" title=\"Cintia joins the Rol\u00e9 das Faveladas at the Women of the World (WOW) Festival, 2018. Sant&#8217;Anna believes it has to do with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2I79WCh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">natural systems of economic sustainability that exists within favelas<\/a> beyond the accumulation and consumption of capital. \u201cA lot of how we function is through trades and exchanges,\u201d she says, \u201cI think that in the favela, people have always done this\u2014only recently has it been called &#8216;sustainability.'&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Hl3YOZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">By always helping others in the community<\/a> when they can, the organization guarantees it will receive support when it needs it\u2014in this way, maintaining mutually beneficial relationships and strengthening local ties.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EntreoCe\u0301ueaFavela1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-52774 size-content\" title=\"Lecture at Espa\u00e7o Epicentral Credit: Entre o C\u00e9u e a Favela Facebook page\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EntreoCe\u0301ueaFavela1-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EntreoCe\u0301ueaFavela1-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/EntreoCe\u0301ueaFavela1-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we are in need of many things, we are not <em>needy<\/em>. We are not helpless,\u201d Sant&#8217;Anna explains. \u201cIn Rio de Janeiro,\u201d Sant&#8217;Anna believes, \u201cmany people assume that the favela can\u2019t achieve anything, but we already have [achieved many things]!\u201d Entre o C\u00e9u e a Favela hopes to <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2wnR8g5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bring more outsiders to Provid\u00eancia<\/a>\u00a0in order to show them how much success there is to be found in the community. This, in turn, can help change misconceptions, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/StopFavelaStigma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eliminate stigmas<\/a>, and improve the self-esteem of community members, especially for children and adolescents.
