Since its founding on May 6, 2000, 6 de Maio has supported youth development through sports in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1zhl0XQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cascadura<\/a>, in Rio de Janeiro&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HYnvqS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Zone<\/a>. Overcoming the numerous challenges involved in keeping a nonprofit project run by volunteers operational over the years, Silva\u2019s humble yet bold youth sports initiative proudly celebrates its 19th anniversary this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Jose\u0301-Fernando-Silva.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-content wp-image-53079\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Jose\u0301-Fernando-Silva-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Jose\u0301-Fernando-Silva-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Jose\u0301-Fernando-Silva-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u201cWe don\u2019t have any great infrastructure, but we have a ball.\u201d Through sports education, primarily soccer, 6 de Maio allows local youth to positively channel energy and emotion into athletics on the playing field. The volunteer initiative also helps youth find alternative recreational opportunities and &#8220;escape violence, criminality, and drugs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSports,\u201d Silva says, \u201care an excellent outlet for reducing our [mental and physical] pains. We use sport to reduce the pains [of violence]. If we get a ball and start kicking it around on the court, dozens of kids\u2014even hundreds\u2014will show up to play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/6-de-maio-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53074\" title=\"Jos\u00e9 lectures to youth at Orlando Leite Park. On weekends, Silva&#8217;s teachings start in the morning: \u201cFirst with a lecture, and then a group discussion about how everyone\u2019s week went\u2014school, family, events. All of this is context,\u201d says Silva. Then it&#8217;s soccer time, and eventually, \u201cthere is a snack that we put together with our meager resources,&#8221; Silva states with a smile. &#8220;Our work begins like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/6-de-maio-Activity.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53133 size-content\" title=\"Local Cascadura youth gather for an activity organized by 6 de maio. The initiative teaches \u201cdiscipline, respect for rules, people, spaces, the public sphere as a whole&#8230; It is proper citizenship that we teach,&#8221; Silva clarifies. Through his training, he has been able to transform his community. \u201cBit by bit,\u201d he says. As with many favelas and other low-income communities in Rio, garbage removal and litter are major issues. \u201cBecause we are marginalized, it is important to be very conscious of where our trash is going and that it is brought to places where it can be removed. But even with few resources, we believe that we can help our community&#8230; We work with the idea that we can. We can change the environment in which we live for the better,&#8221; Silva explains.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel, a 19-year-old who now regularly helps Silva with lessons at Orlando Leite Park, joined the initiative program five years ago in an effort to find a positive outlet in his community. Silva says that as a young participant in 6 de Maio, \u201c[Gabriel] followed my teachings. Now he is a central part of our work.&#8221; Over the course of the past nineteen years, Silva has positively altered the lives of countless youth such as Gabriel. To close, Silva states, \u201cWe don\u2019t know where we will end up, but we know we will arrive at a very positive place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>*6 de Maio, Sonhar e Realizar is one of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/SFNlaunch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over 100 community projects mapped<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/plDfgE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catalytic Communities<\/a>\u00a0(CatComm), the organization that publishes\u00a0RioOnWatch, as part of our parallel \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/SFNReport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sustainable Favela Network<\/a>&#8216; program launched in 2017 to recognize, support, strengthen, and expand on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bit.ly\/FavelaModelo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainable qualities and community movements inherent to<\/a> Rio de Janeiro\u2019s favela communities.
