The police shootings terrorized residents of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2H9aBFN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conjunto Esperan\u00e7a<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2cYYA6K\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salsa e Merengue<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1y2jgzx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vila do Pinheiro<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1Gd4bRb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vila do Jo\u00e3o<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2H7lAiW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eight people were killed<\/a> and three were injured\u2014one of whom was a child\u2014as a result of police actions. In addition, the Civil Police report a seizure of firearms and drugs, as well as the arrest of three people. Once again, efforts to combat the drug trade have claimed victims with no prospect of building peace in favelas.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bz6ytQuc-wI\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Residents of Conjunto Esperan\u00e7a say that eight youth were killed on the same street, in two nearby homes. Also according to residents, the youth\u2014when confronted by the police\u2014stopped posing a risk but were still killed, evidently execution-style. Two of the youth raised their hands, saying &#8220;I lost,&#8221; to which the government agents responded: &#8220;My order is to kill.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A team from the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Yc3Zft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mar\u00e9 Rights<\/a> project, an initiative of <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1ElmQXr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Redes da Mar\u00e9<\/a> (Mar\u00e9 Development Networks NGO), visited the region and identified vehicles struck by gunshots and multiple houses that had been invaded and damaged. In one house, eighteen bullet casings were found. The psychological and emotional consequences for residents are impossible to measure. As of the publication of this article,* we have not yet obtained information or established contact with the families of the slain youth.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1n3nnC7Nh1s\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Healthcare facilities, schools, businesses, and other institutions suspended their activities. The teams from the Mar\u00e9 Rights project formally denounced the violence committed as part of this police operation to the Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office. The State Public Defender&#8217;s Office will be present in the region tomorrow [May 7] to collect testimonies and receive denunciations from residents.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Bullet-Hole-Sink-Mare\u0301.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53198 size-content\" title=\"Photo: Mar\u00e9 Online\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Bullet-Hole-Sink-Mare\u0301-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Bullet-Hole-Sink-Mare\u0301-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Bullet-Hole-Sink-Mare\u0301-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The communications office of the Municipal Health Secretariat announced the suspension of services at the Vila do Jo\u00e3o Municipal Health Clinic and Adid Jatene Family Clinic in order to guarantee the security of health professionals and patients. In close proximity to Mar\u00e9, there is an education complex that serves approximately 7,000 students, whose routines were interrupted and whose lives were put at risk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Bullet-Hole-Glass-Mare\u0301.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53197 size-content\" title=\"Photo: Mar\u00e9 Online\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Bullet-Hole-Glass-Mare\u0301-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Bullet-Hole-Glass-Mare\u0301-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Bullet-Hole-Glass-Mare\u0301-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to information provided by the Rio de Janeiro State Civil Police, the force&#8217;s Special Resources Coordination (CORE) unit carried out the operation in the favelas of Complexo da Mar\u00e9 with the goal of apprehending one of the individuals responsible for clashes between drug trafficking factions in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2zFBzC9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">S\u00e3o Gon\u00e7alo<\/a>, a municipality in <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1x0spnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greater Rio<\/a>, stating that he was presumed to be hiding in the area. We believe that objectives such as these ought to be achieved <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HNo43W\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">through the use of police intelligence tactics<\/a>, not through the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2LQcYOw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">violation of residents&#8217; daily lives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Blood-Stained-Ground-Mare\u0301.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53199 size-content\" title=\"Photo: Mar\u00e9 Online\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Blood-Stained-Ground-Mare\u0301-620x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Blood-Stained-Ground-Mare\u0301-620x264.jpg 620w, https:\/\/rioonwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Blood-Stained-Ground-Mare\u0301-940x400.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWhile there are no clear directives from the judiciary regarding the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2OlRfiz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">use of helicopters as platforms for gunfire<\/a>, these [new style of] operations continue to terrorize the lives of favela residents in Rio de Janeiro. According to data collected by <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2HaYNTy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">De Olho na Mar\u00e9<\/a> (&#8220;Eyes on Mar\u00e9&#8221;)\u2014a project of Redes da Mar\u00e9 that monitors the impact of armed confrontations\u2014police operations involving the use of helicopters have proven to be <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2DmqdDp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more deadly<\/a>. In June 2018, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Ifz8X0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seven people were killed<\/a>. In April of this year, two people were killed. Today [May 6], there was yet another massacre in Mar\u00e9; eight people were killed.
